Absolutely deserves it.

Truly, trying to decide between BG3 and Alan Wake 2 when voting for GOTY was like trying to pick a favorite parent, or child. Both so good, and huge achievements in unique ways. Stacked year for awards, that’s for sure!

This sounds evil somehow

Monopolies generally are evil

SuperSaiyanSwag,

Because we have been there already with Netflix, but what’s more evil here is that Netflix is not a juggernaut of a company like Microsoft. I don’t hate MS like most users on Lemmy, but even I can see how harmful this can be to the gaming industry. Indies will start struggling to breaking even if an average user just starts relying on gamepass.

Phegan,

It is evil, they are trying to replicate what happened in streaming and music in the gaming space. They want to remove digital ownership

Phegan, do games w Microsoft Wants Game Pass On PlayStation, Nintendo, And "Every Screen" Possible

Microsoft is becoming the Spotify of gaming. You own nothing, they pay the creators garbage and we are so dependent on the system it’s hard to leave it.

We need to resist this.

echo64, do games w Phil Spencer Reiterates That Xbox Is Excited About Activision-Blizzard’s Back Catalog

Excited about renting it out to you a month at a time with an ever increasing cost

RGB3x3,

For now, at least, Game Pass is definitely the best deal in subscriptions these days. It’s honestly wild to me that it’s not more expensive.

But for sure give it time and it’ll be like $500 a year.

Phegan,

I suspect they are taking the Spotify approach. They will have a low price for a great value to monopolize the market. Then over time increase the price and reduce features and value.

echo64,

Netflix a decade ago. Wow, this is so amazing. What a deal. How could it go wrong

Netflix today, okay, which subscription service to we get this month, I want to watch this show, but Sarah wants to watch that show and the other show we were watching got deleted from the service so we just can’t watch that one. If only we could learn from this situation

Gamepass is a “great deal” because Microsoft office pays for it.

Goronmon,

Netflix was cheap because no one valued streaming rights initially, and thus there was little competition for those rights. Once companies realized how valuable the service was, prices shot up.

One of those strange situations where increased competition increased prices.

echo64,

Yes, that makes the gamepass situation even more egregious. Everyone knows the cost of making games, but only Microsoft can afford to literally lose money for a decade to secure dominance.

No one can compete because everyone else has to run a real business

pycorax,

That’s fine. Nothing is stopping you from dropping it once it becomes a bad deal. I cancelled Netflix once the price became ridiculous. For games, it’s even easier, there’s many alternatives both legal and illegal.

echo64,

Yes, we can all do that once the industry has been irrevocably changed forever, and now nothing gets made outside of subscription services

pycorax,

What makes you think that will actually happen? Games still make a lot purely from game sales. Not to mention a lot of absurd cash grabs like the latest CoD would fail to work when there’s only subscription models. Besides, despite how cheap these services have been, game sales have not dropped either.

echo64,

You 15 years ago: What makes you think movies will only be available on subscription services? they make a lot of money selling things physically today, Netflix is just a side revenue, it won’t change anything.

despite how cheap these services have been, game sales have not dropped either.

aside from on xbox.

pycorax,

I can still access movies outside of subscription services so I’m not sure what you’re on about.

Could you not get Johnny’s 911 already? I swear I had it in my first playthrough when the game came out. And I hope the metro station is more than just a skin on pre-existing fast travel points. But it would be incredible if there was actual trains you can jump in running around.

wolfshadowheart,
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

The 911 should have been, I remember doing the quest to get it and then hating the car lol.

The metros are exciting, I used a mod that put a system for it in the game and it was fun to use. Though, what I'm really looking for is the ability to ride as a passenger in cars any time!

kayjay,

Yeah I don’t know what the author of the article is blabbering about. The 911 could be gotten through the Johnny Silverhand questline ever since launch. It’s the same quest where you can get Johnny’s pistol.

It's a new car, though it is only a variation of the 911

It’d be great if they re-released sc2 but retconned most of the story to make it not flaccid and disappointing. WITH A BETTER ENDING FOR TYCHUS. TYCHUS WAS HILARIOUS.

    So, just like older games?

I’m interested in this period of time where all video games were good and no greed was involved.

Please highlight where I said all video games were good at a period of time.

    Goronmon,

You said that modern games were terrible cash grabs, which it’s different from how games “used to be”. So I’m interested in which period of time “used to be” actually encompasses.

    RGB3x3,

It’s not the already released games they’re excited about. It’s the IP ownership. Why create something new when you can recycle old ideas for cheaper?

    Unpopular opinion here:

I much prefer to play on Gamepass at the moment. From my personal experience, I will simply never have the time to play again to 90% of my games. It’s just impossible (even if I stopped playing new games today, I am not sure I will be able to do so before I die). Since it’s way cheaper to play this way, I don’t see the point of buying new games anymore (I still buy a few games per year, and just cancel my membership while playing them such as Nintendo games or games I really want to play day one like Cyberpunk).

Besides, over the years, I built up an emulation setup with all the games I played (and old games I would likely play at some point, since I dedicate 50% of my play time to retrogaming). It’s not like it is necessary to own them to play them if you want a nostalgia trip a few decades after their initial release.

Besides, the vast majority of those games will still be available in the future (physical copies, online stores, remaster/remakes, piracy, emulation). I believe it is unnecessary to own every single game in the fear of the being able to (potentially) play it once again in 10 years.

I agree that the gamepass model will likely collapse at some point if it becomes too popular, but it’s not a problem to take advantage to it while it’s profitable and drop it when it’s not anymore (just unsubscribe when you don’t use it, which is what I do 4-6 months per year to play other games).

    BorgDrone,

I will simply never have the time to play again to 90% of my games. It’s just impossible (even if I stopped playing new games today, I am not sure I will be able to do so before I die). Since it’s way cheaper to play this way, I don’t see the point of buying new games anymore

My reason is kind of the opposite: I have very little time to play games, so I choose quality over quantity. What I see on GamePass is an endless supply of mediocrity. I’d rather buy a few really good games at full price than spend the little time I have playing whatever Microsoft padded their catalog with.

    djidane535,
    @djidane535@kbin.social avatar

Depends on your taste I guess. I don’t play those games because they are there, but because they are « on my list ». I don’t think games like Ori, Hades, Hi-Fi rush, Call of the sea, Persona 5, etc are trash. And when nothing interests me anymore, I just unsubscribe and come back a few months later when there are at least a few interesting games. I agree that I wouldn’t only play on gamepass :).

    BorgDrone,

I don’t think games like Ori, Hades, Hi-Fi rush, Call of the sea, Persona 5, etc are trash

I’m not saying they are trash, they are either really old or just decent games. I would say it’s mostly games I would rate a 7 or 8 out of 10. But with limited time available for gaming, there are enough games that I would rate a 9 or 10 to fill the available time. So why would I not just exclusively play only very top tier games?

GamePass is nice if you’re 16, can’t afford to buy full price games and have lots of free time. You get a lot of play time out of a limited budget with decent enough games.

But when you’re 40+ with a full time job, you make a different trade-off. You have much less free time but a higher income. You then tend to go for quality over quantity. Make every hour you can spend gaming count.

    djidane535,
    @djidane535@kbin.social avatar

Well, I am 30+ years old and have no problem to buy games full price. I would have played those games even if they weren’t on the Gamepass. That’s why I said it’s more a question of taste in gaming that explains why you consider such games just « decent ». I think if you try to list your « 9 or 10 out of 10 games », I will have no or little interest in most of them (and that’s fine, no one is wrong here ^^).

My message was more to take advantage of the Gamepass for the games that are worth it, for the time it is worth it. Even if 99% of the games were trash, it would still be worth it to subscribe and play those 1% (and unsubscribe when you are done).

Honestly, there aren’t many games in their back catalogue that I’m interested in. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Hexen and Warcraft 3 maybe, there may be more but those are the ones that come to mind. But I’m not invested in those enough to want to subscribe to Game Pass or buy an Xbox.
