Yeah, World of Warcraft is a real thing

notabot,

Robin Dunbar, an anthropologist, found a relationship between primate brain size and average social group size, and extrapolated that to humans, giving a comfortable group size of around 150 people, known as Dunbar’s number. If you work on the principal that that would be about the average size of a tribe in an unstressed hunter society, it would seem quite pkausible that a hunting group would be around 50 people. It’s large enough to take down pretty much anything you’d want to hunt, and small enough to coordinate efficiently.

ch00f,

And it followed into some human culture. Certain Amish groups split up when their population approaches that number.

notabot,

That makes sense, it keeps communities small enough to be cohesive but large enough to function, and spreads the groups to mitigate risks.

MonkderVierte,

As far as i know, it was typically around 100 - 120 people and before i knew that i read somewhere that around 100 is the number of relationships the brain can handle.

notabot,

It’s a fairly nebulous number, it’s going to be different for each individual, and Dunbar was only positing an approximate relationship between brain size and group size. Even if humans can manage 150 or more relationships, it makes sense to keep your group smaller than that to allow for external relationships too.

4 is probably one of my favorites but in the brief time i’ve spent with 3 it’s definitely a close contender

Baldurs Gate 3 anyone? I’m kind of shocked to not see it in here. I’ve never enjoyed a game more. Only sad thing is that there won’t be official dlcs or expansions… But then again there’s mod support! Other than that I really enjoy EU IV after 2k hours, but all-time-favorite? I don’t think so.

+1 on the Max Payne mention…great game!

Came out near the time of my favorite PC game, Unreal Tournament.

As far as arcade games, I’d say maybe Rygar or Dragon’s Lair…but those are so old (like I am) that I might not be remembering them so well?

I'm rather a fan of Apogee's Secret Agent. I loved it back in the day and then enjoyed the HD remaster of it a few years back.

I’m not really a platformer fan but Abe’s Oddysee/Exodus and Kirby’s Dream Land are up there.

It’s the kind of game where after you beat it you kind of feel empty after beating it.

Any suggestion of other games like that ?

Personally for me Silent Hill 2, Alan Wake 2, Fallout New Vegas, Assassins Creed Black Flag, and Portal 2 are the ones i can name in recent memory. I’m sure there’s more that left me feeling the same way beyond that though

It’s a great game. I’m a little biased because that was my game when i was little, but it’s really solid narrative wise and gameplay wise

Love these! Reading the bit about Sierra gave me big nostalgia vibes.

Just a FYI, the turds at Longdue making “Hopetown” are suing Argo Tuulik one of the lead writers for the OG Disco Elysium in some lame effort to snuff out any competition from Argo’s own project.

Luckily the community has really rallied behind him so things are looking up. Still I wouldn’t give Longdue/Riaz Moola/Hopetown (ugh what kind of hack came up with that name?) any more positive press because they sure as hell don’t deserve it :o

Ender Lilies

It’s a mechanically strong Metroidvania with branching paths, hidden areas, and exploration, but what I love about it is the atmosphere and the juxtapositions is uses.

It is a crumbling decaying kingdom full of monstrosities, and the main character is an innocent little girl in a pure white dress. Lily does not attack, some of the monsters she is able to purify to restore their mind at which point they help her. So when you attack a monster appears to do the attack animation, while lily cowers a bit behind it.

One thing I love is when you are in a boss fight and shit is going down hard, the sound track is extremely chill piano music. The soft and beautiful contrasts against the harshness of the situation is a very compelling way.

The sequel Ender Magnolias is good as well. Mechanically there are some improvements, but I don’t feel like the atmosphere or world building is as good. That may be because I played Lilies and was used to it. If your haven’t played either I’d suggest starting with Lilies, and if you like Magnolias is worth your time.

StarCraft 2 was the perfect competitive RTS, with the best pro scene. I lived and breathed that game for years. Sucks that Blizzard decided to stop supporting it.

Planetside 2 as it was many years ago. I’ll be forever bitter how they ruined it.

If I look at recorded playtime then its teamfortress 2 which wins just by 0.1h over rimworld and I havent really played tf2 for over 10 years.
