confusedpuppy, do games w Indie games using retro graphics

I’ve found myself lately a lot more interested in games that don’t focus heavily on graphics but instead allow other parts of the game to speak for itself. This allows for the imagination to fill in the gaps, as you mentioned.

I’ve been playing a lot or Caves of Qud recently. It’s a rogue-like game with tile graphics and colourful text. Somehow this menu simulator game has drawn me into it’s harsh and unforgiving world. The tile based graphics actually allows for an amazing amount of creative freedom both from the developer and player point of views. The developer has created this futuristic planet with mutants and cybernetics roaming the planet trying to survive. The player has the freedom to play as they like and create the most unique characters they can imagine. My current character has two hearts, a scorpion tail, a fanged beak, two dagger wielding claws and a habit for stabbing.

I think the rise of constantly better technology has inadvertently encouraged a focus on better graphics over other aspects of video games. While there are some absolutely beautiful games with higher hardware demand, I think as of late, I’m yearning for games that focus more on story or gameplay. Games where you can feel the developer’s passion. Games with polish and attention to details in the most unexpected ways. Games that attempt to push boundaries within certain limitations (think hardware or graphic styles for example).

I think what I want is a game that feels like I’m reading a fiction book in a way. What I mean is that when you read a work of fiction, your imagination is filling in all that visual information. A game can provide you more than just text, but if it can balance graphics, gameplay and story, it can really transport and immerse your imagination into that world.

“Action role-playing game”, in case anyone else is annoyed the acronym is continuously used, yet never explained.

yuri, do gaming w thoughts on arpgs?

I mean, it’s no Diablo but I love the Hades games. If you’re in it mostly for the progression and build construction than you won’t have a great time, but if you’re looking for SOLID arpg gameplay they’re a good fit.

There’s a lot more focus on clean movement, it’s very much an arpg through a roguelite lens rather than an mmo or pure arpg.

DreamyRin,

unfortunately I am in it for the grinding, progression and crafting a build (usually something off the wall when I get confident.)

that said, I do love Hades! I’ve been wanting to get the second one despite it being in early access so hopefully that’ll be in my library soon.

yuri,

Strong recommend, I’ve already put more hours into the sequel than I did the first game. Nyx’s mirror is replaced with a card system that allows for a bit of build customization, you might really dig it!

Warto regularnie podjezdzac do sąsiedzkiego warsztatu rowerowego i korzystać u nich z pompki z manometrem (albo zanabyć). Pompowanie min. raz w tygodniu i przed jazdą jeśli rower stoi dłużej nawet nieużywany.

LukaszH,
@LukaszH@szmer.info avatar

LukaszH,
@LukaszH@szmer.info avatar

LukaszH,
@LukaszH@szmer.info avatar

I’ll never make it sadly.

But I dream of a game that kind of looks and feels like a Pokémon game. But you are a witch or herbalist going round the different biomes in a fantasy setting making remedies and potions like a morrowind game.

So obviously there’s be your dying grandma or mentor and some sort of evil overtaking the land. You set out of the city with your knife, shovel and glassware. There’d be a pokedex of plant and animal parts to find and fill out. Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, then maybe also monster parts. There’d probably be a crafting tree like I’m Minecraft. Different biomes, seasons, or biome locations would inevitably have to be gated by tools or potions.

Eventually you’d discover the recipe to make the thing to defeat the BBEG and he’d probably show up to stop you from getting the last and rarest ingredient in the potion. Etc.

Would definitely need to ride the knifes edge of challenging a players knowledge and intuition about botany, as well as tropes in witchcraft and fantasy. Without being too hard, too requiring of memory and notes…

A challenge to making the game? Would need probably 5x the art in an old Zelda or Pokémon game. Talking 200+ unique foraged items, 6+ biomes with sub biome/habitats. Monsters. Townsfolk. Etc. Oh and I’d like have to learn how to code and make art. So yeah. Someone. Please make this game for me. Or tell me it exists.

Nothing compares to getting into the flow when you’re playing Spy, I love some psychological warfare. Stringing together long sequences of backstabs and hide-and-seeks with the enemy team is so much fun.

The knife that hides backstabbed corpses and instantly disguises you as them is also super fun to use.

Noxar,

I can’t help but respect spy mains because they play by far the weakest merc in the game. If your team has a somewhat competent pyro on spy duty they don’t get to do anything.

daniyeg, do games w Any full loot/pvp base building mmos out there?

Albion online seems like a good fit for you, although based on your location your ping will massively vary since they only have a few centralised servers.

ericbomb,

I see gold is for sale in the shop, is store bought gold a big influence in the game? Or pretty irrelevant?

daniyeg,

i haven’t played it that much since my ping was atrocious, but i would say no. IIRC beside membership and cosmetics that you can buy with gold, i think you can covert it into silver which you can use to progress faster and even buy gear but you won’t gain an unfair advantage or get something that’s exclusive to the MTX shop.

you should read what experienced players have written if you want a more detailed explanation, im just sort of vaguely familiar with the game.

bogosort,

Pretty much the same as PLEX in Eve. If that was p2w for you, then this will be p2w for you too.

Actually come to think of it, it’s worse in the regard that gold prices have an impact on the game. The lower the conversion rate of gold to silver drops below 1:5000 the higher the global discount on repairs, travel, islands etc.

ericbomb,

I mean… in eve you were allowed to straight up buy perfect characters or skill injectors, then the isk to buy a ship. So you could have a newbie with the same character power as a 3 year old player.

My brain does not like grinding games with strong P2W aspects, it messes with me.

Aradina,
@Aradina@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah but that person would suck. A player with experience will beat a credit card warrior every time.

ericbomb,

Brain says bad. Because I’ll be there, working on trying to get a new shiny ship and then the brain is like… “You make 40$ an hour overtime. That’s a lot more ship than doing this.” or "instead of checking in on your skill queue every day for two years to make sure it’s optimal $300 worth of plex and you have your dream toon. "

And yeah… I know myself. I need to avoid games that make that lil voice pop up.

Aradina,
@Aradina@lemmy.ml avatar

Entirely fair objection. I’ve won eve too and at least partially due to increasing monotization

bogosort,

Albion has “skill injectors” too. There are tradeable tomes with which, if you were to spend enough money on it, you could almost max your character.

Keep in mind I’m just trying to paint you a picture here, so you can decide whether it fits for you. I’d still recommend trying Albion. It’s a small install and free to try after all.

It’s been a long time but one of my favorites was the Star Control 2 remake Ur-Quan Masters. I believe there is a free HD version out there, too. Plus if you like it, the OG creators have current projects you can support (they left that IP after 2).

Not sure what genre it is; certainly not action packed like your examples but those space battles were fun.

My internet tech came to setup a new ONT and had a bunch of time to kill so we talked about hobbies, I guess he builds arcade machines and was showing me pictures of all the wiring and woodwork he did plus programming to get it all functioning and the custom pc inside. It looked like a ton of work.

I gave him some spare 12th Gen i7 mobo combos for him to use in his builds as he said he was looking for more parts and usually puts in a 3080 video card in each

Rhynoplaz, do games w The N64

You’re not wrong at all. On any of your points.

It’s a really difficult console to go back to. The peak of the N64 was one of my personal video game peaks. I was in high school and staying up all night at a buddy’s house playing GoldenEye was the BEST.

Many years later, I tried to scratch that itch and buy a used console and some games. We played it for maybe a week, but it was rough, and we didn’t really get any value out of it.

It’s hard to describe how disorienting Super Mario 3D was the first time I played it. 3D open worlds were very new and we were discovering it in the only way available, with a three handed controller.

Now that 3D games have been refined, the N64 looks like a hot mess, with very few actually good games, but at the time, it was like an experimental space craft going to new worlds, we learned how to work it, and we appreciated the ride!

I finally started Horizon: Forbidden West - gameplay changes compared to HZD keep trickling in and I couldn’t be happier. I love Aloy’s character so I’m really happy to be in her shoes again.

This past week was pretty disappointing before that:

  • Hellblade II was good, but nowhere near as impactful as the first one for me. I’m left with a sour taste overall, although I’ll admit they did a tremendous job with cinematography and character rendering.
  • Stellar Blade was insipid. Whatever could save it in my book - its gameplay - turns out stale pretty quickly, so I ended up abandoning the game midway. The story and characters were really uninteresting imo, couple that with how EVE is represented… I couldn’t really find any redeeming qualities.
Penguincoder,

Horizon Zero Dawn is amazing, gameplay and story.

Berttheduck,

I’m working my way through forbidden west as well. I’m really enjoying it. It’s always good to spend more time in an interesting game world. I really appreciate the more free form climbing system in this one, not quite breath of the wild climbing but way better than grab the yellow ledges only.

any1th3r3,

Absolutely! You could sort of “cheese” your way into climbing some parts of the world of Zero Dawn, but Forbidden West’s climbing is much improved - to the point that I’ve been getting sidetracked a number of times already just exploring and getting to great vistas.

ISOmorph,

I started it as well. Had weird sound issues that I had to fix by downgrading my system sample rate. It looks and feels amazing now that it works.
