arudesalad, do games w Why do modern strategy games hate the grid?

I think your just playing games that don’t have a grid. I still play a lot of games with a grid. If you want a strategy game that has a grid, my dad has been playing a lot of jagged alliance 3 and has been saying very positive things about it.

Unless they start offering on-prem or there are some very high profile server hacks I don’t see that being possible. Unlike media and client software they don’t need to provide the core functionality to end users, just the output.

aldalire,

I agree. As for the how, it’s gonna be tricky to say the least

Thelsim, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of August 27th

Like many, I’ve been playing a lot of Baldur’s Gate 3. I love the game, but part of me is already longingly looking at the Pillar of Eternity or Pathfinder games for a bit less complicated level design.
The 3d worlds are nice, but I always have the feeling like I’m a little lost.

rivingtondown,

The Pillars and Pathfinder games are both relatively daunting in terms of world size and, at least for Pathfinder, the rules are much more gritty… remember Pathfinder is a spin-off of DnD 3.5e and sticks relatively closely to that. While BG3 is based on the much more “friendly” DnD 5e rules. Pathfinder is much closer to BG2 than BG3 is, gameplay wise.

The big differences between BG3 and the other modern CRPGs is that BG3 does an exceptional job at presenting unprecedented player choice in traversal and combat. Other games have dialogue skill checks and all that but traversing the world is flat, literally practically menu driven and combat is all measurements and numbers. BG3 has free-form qualities that, in the world of video games, have so far only been utilized in immersive sims like Deus Ex and, oddly enough, I’d say the modern 3D Zeldas.

Thelsim,

Oh, I agree on all those points. The rules are definitely easier to understand, especially compared to Pathfinder. And I do like that you are more free in how to resolve a conflict.

The thing I meant was that for me, personally, interacting with the world is daunting. Having a 3rd person view of a fully 3d world filled with tons of items to interact with and with different elevations makes it hard for me to make a mental map of the game world. It’s not such a big deal for Deus Ex (where it’s in 1st person and you can get really up close to things) or with Zelda (where the amount of stuff to interact with is a lot more sparse). In BG3 I just constantly feel like I’m lost and missing out on things that might have been hidden from view because I looked at it from the wrong angle.
It’s just me. I miss the overview of the flatter maps in those other games. It allows me to focus more on the story and the exploration funny enough.

Again, I agree with everything else. I still love the game and the design, I just realize what I’m missing from my other favorite games.

rivingtondown,

I feel you on that front. I have a Steam Deck and use it over my PC 90% of the time and even have BG3 running well on it but I prefer to sit at my desk for this game because the clutter is so dense that I need that big monitor and mouse to pixel hunt for all the little items and clicky things hidden around the world… and being able to spin that camera quickly around with a mouse while traversing is super important to catching things

empireOfLove, do piracy w What are the ways to play minecraft offline (single player)?
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

Mineshafter[dot]info is what I used to use back in my cracked minecraft days. It basically provides a modified launcher that patches itself and the Minecraft JAR to look for the Mineshafter login servers instead of Microsoft’s. It lets you use singleplayer as well as multi-player on cracked servers that do not force online authentication.

The site is still up and paid for, which means someone still gives a shit about it, so I think it may still be functional. I haven’t used it in literally ten years though, so I doubt it supports the latest Minecraft versions though, but you can try it. Oh God. Ten years. I’m old…

Chewy7324,

According to the readme it downloads the songs from youtube or other sources and then adds metadata after reencoding. This means tracks might include unwanted audio from a yt music video.

But I also used tools like this in the past, they work great.

Vampire Survivors co-op!

blindsight,

I’m dealing with thumb injuries, so I’ve mostly been playing Vampire Survivors for the last few weeks. WASD and no mouse is perfect to let my thumbs heal.

I only just bought it recently. I’m still working through unlocking everything and just beat my first Inverted level, which took me quite a few attempts. I also realize that I probably shouldn’t be trying to kill Death on Inverted mode, but I’ve been building around that goal each game…

Really fun game. I prefer Soulstone Survivors, but I can’t play it with my thumbs rn!

Yeah local coop came out about a week or two ago! You can do remote play together on steam, but performance has been pretty shitty. It’s still been a lot of fun though!

Chewy7324, do piracy w What's the best way to get German content?

If you’re using Radarr/Sonarr, I can’t recommend this guide enough if you want german + english dual language media. github.com/…/radarr-sonarr-german-dual-language

Usenet is great once I got SceneNZB recommended. They include content from House of Usenet, a forum for german usenet (getting media from forums can’t be easily automated, which is the big drawback of HoU).

I also found DrunkenSlug recommended, but everything I wanted in german was also on SceneNZB anyway.

My money’s on an Animal Crossing, possibly not immediately on release but close to it nonetheless. New Horizons had just too much success for the company not trying to ride the wave, and they have so much room to improve on the mechanics and the variety of the setting.

    You underestimate the casual gaming crowd. The same people who buy all of the sims content, still play animal crossing to get cozy in bed before sleeping every night.

    EnderofGames, do gaming w How was inside for you?

    INSIDE was easier than LIMBO, but a worthy spiritual successor. Very good in the genres of puzzle platformer and horror. No cheap tricks, just good work all the way through.

    The story is VERY open ended, and I felt a little slighted at first, but it grew on me. As far as very open ended stories, so was LIMBO's.

    MJBrune,

    Really? I feel like 90% of it was just plowing ahead to realize what something does because the game wasn’t clear in the answer. Like I’m inside death is required to figure out what you need to do. Even if it’s not death it’s going forward, pressing a button, realizing you aren’t supposed to press the button and going back to press it again.

    Honestly the biggest issue is the player verbs aren’t clear. There was one point that you have to hide behind a box but the game has never had that mechanic so you have no clue you can even do it. The game will respawn you hiding behind the box to explain the mechanic to you. So that’s essentially one place of forced death but there are dozens of examples of information you get the best after death.

    @Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    You can name the title, that’s fine. The only thing you can’t do here is openly share links to that content (it must be encoded with base64).

    When it comes to old media, especially from the early 2000’s and earlier, I start with Archive.org and YouTube.

    Like /u/Sharpiemaker suggested, your library would also be a good spot to check. If you have a reference library in your system they are a goldmine for that sort of thing.

    Alternatively, you can pick up a cheap capture card and record the tape to your PC.

    MasterBuilder,

    I have found a library that had equipment to transfer to DVD, however if the tape has copy protection it won’t work. I’ll find out. Plus, I can buy a DVD version - I found it in searches - but I already own this and don’t want to buy it again.

    ezures, do gaming w Beautiful games?

    Bastion from supergiant games, most of the game is hand painted, it gives a floating feeling, and given the game is on floating islands it gives really nice atmosphere.

    On the other side, the art style of Katana Zero and Hotline Miami is dirty and distorted, but I really dig that style . Probably wouldn’t work with standing still part, but in motion they are works of art.

    BearGun,

    most of the supergiant games tbh, hades and transistor both have some beautiful scenes as well.

    @facow@hexbear.net avatar

    I use PIA because it’s cheap as dirt. I don’t use their client and I have it setup so exclusively my torrent client uses it. It works for my use case because I’m pretty much just trying to avoid nasty letters from my ISP. I wouldn’t trust them with any of my regular traffic because they’re sketchy and there’s got to be a reason they’re so cheap.

    Although I would consider what your usecase for a VPN is - ie what attack vectors are you trying to protect against when using it for regular traffic? There’s arguably very little a VPN does to protect you on public WiFi and also opens you up to new risks

    DonnieDarkmode,

    Well my hope was that it would protect against things like packet sniffing and in case I connect to an evil twin (if I’m using that term correctly). But I’ll be the first to admit my knowledge there is incredibly limited, and I wasn’t aware that it would actually create new vulnerabilities. Would you be able to explain a bit?
