TheGrandNagus, do gaming w It's still going!

During the Covid GPU shortage, my card died and I had to go back to my Geforce 9800 GX2. A monster of a card (in 2008).

I did not have a good time. But it was incredible it even worked at all.

There is still a GPU shortage, but they just blamed Covid. Before they blamed crypto. Now they blame AI.

TheGrandNagus,

I’m aware of the current shortage.

Unfortunately I feel we’ll be forever prone to this now that GPUs are useful for far more than just gaming. The market is being shared with people who are willing to spend a lot more for the same silicon.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

The vendors should stop calling it GPUs if its not used as a GPU. AI workloads are not GPU, cryptomining are not GPU. Nvidia and alike should create a different name for it. Nvidia H100 for example is still called GPU, but it has nothing to do with a normal GPU you and I use.

Jakeroxs,

It’s about the type of computation it does, not their fault it fits better for those use cases lol

that is also fine. Or just call it "AI cards" when these chips are obviously meant from AI interference workloads.

Can’t artificially increase prices without artificially increasing demand by manufacturing an artificial shortage.

hangry, do games w Random Screenshots of my Games #58 - Black Mesa (Half-Life)

I never clicked on your posts because I thought they were literally meh random screenshots and nothing more.
Damn was I wrong. You are building the Lemmy museum of videogames.
Thank you!!!

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for your support! My posts originally started as just a random screenshot or two of the latest game I was playing. But I always hated how people just talked about specific video games like everyone on the thread was intimately familiar with them. Especially if it was a game that sounded interesting to me. I wanted to know more about it!

So I decided to use my screenshots as a way to introduce newcomers to each game; give them a little intro to the plot and gameplay so they’d be interested in trying it out for themselves. Or to remind previous players of a great game they hadn’t played in a while.

By the time I started writing long-form blog entries on video games, I already had a bit of a series going and I didn’t want to suddenly change the title of my numbered posts. So they are “random” screenshots of my games, but they’re also a spoiler-free in-depth exploration of each game.

One day, I plan to go back and re-do some of my earlier posts so I can actually have in-depth discussion on those games too.

I’ve also been archiving my posts on a personal blog, in case any of them get taken down or blocked here for any reason. If anyone’s interested in checking out my history of posts, it’s a bit easier to review the archive at that link.

I enjoyed BotW, but I knew from the moment I saw the “let’s go Lego!” mechanics in TotK that I probably wouldn’t enjoy it at all.

Just really don’t like building mechanics in games. Or crafting. And the crafting was already pushing it in BotW. This is just amped up to eleven.

High five brother.

Even with that I am about to finish BOTW, I am not too excited about TOTK though.

To be honest even when BOTW has crafting mechanics I barely use them… I don’t cook anything unless a mission requires it, the same for the weapons I don’t craft them, I just pick up whatever, it is not like they last too much.

dantheclamman, do games w What are some old games that are hard to revisit, because a more modern and superior version exists?
@dantheclamman@lemmy.world avatar

I have set up the original Fallout (fully modded and running through Fallout 1n2), but it’s pretty hard to get into. Not because of the graphics, which are actually fine, but just because the mechanics are quite intricate and I think my ability to learn new gameplay mechanics is declining as I enter my mid-30s (I’ve only played Fallout starting with Fallout 3). I’m going to keep trying to get into it!

The classic Fallouts do have some quirks, but I hope you get through them and can get into it. They are absolutely amazing games, well worth your time.

As someone who played Fallout 2 as a teen it’s not your age, the first 2 have a lot of little things that end up having a big effect, and they are difficult. They do not pull their punches and will happily smack you around.

I restarted Fallout 2 many times when I was first playing it trying to figure out a build I liked.

the_riviera_kid,

No worries bud, the mechanics for 1 and 2 has always been shit. People sucked it up and played anyway because the writing was so damn good. If you can’t get into the game because the mechanics or controls are bad thats the games fault not yours.

I have been trying to replay both for years and everytime I give up after a few hours because the experience is just painful.

B0NK3RS, do games w Upscaling is actually good (as an option)
@B0NK3RS@lemmy.world avatar

Upscaling is great for older games that don’t support modern resolutions. I’m not really a fan of using it in modern games because of the blurryness you mentioned.

Regarding frame gen… Optimise your damn games! Game optimisation is becoming a lost art and now people think they should spend thousands on new hardware too keep up :(

Coelacanth, do games w Your all-time favorite game? Let's discuss the best options!
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

It’s a difficult question to answer. I personally barely consider Disco Elysium to be a game, more like an interactive story that uses certain game mechanics as grammar elements and punctuation in its storytelling. It’s a novel masquerading as a game. It’s three novels in a trenchcoat. But if we do count it then it is my pick, by a landslide.

Otherwise it’s probably Baldur’s Gate 2. It’s the story game I’ve replayed the most over the years and it was absolutely fundamental in my journey as a gamer, the definition of a formative experience. Even though parts of it are dated now (some clunk is to be expected from a 25-year-old game) I still prefer it to BG3. It’s got a great story, great companions and an all-time great villain. David Warner put in an incredible performance and even all these years later there aren’t many video game villains who have surpassed Irenicus in sheer aura.

ampersandrew, (edited )
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I played BG1 and 2 for the first time shortly before the release of BG3, and I just wanted to hear Irenicus talk more.

Disco Elysium, on the other hand, just did not hit for me. The only things I hear about it are praise, but my friends list is filled with people who played it for a few hours, like I did, and stopped, so maybe the dissenters just aren’t so vocal.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Like I said, the game itself on its store page claims to be a “detective game RPG” while in reality I would argue it’s barely any of those things. So a lot of people probably come into it with the wrong expectations. It’s more like a novel about love and loss, about addiction, depression and the past looming over the present like a grey ghost. It’s a story about finding hope in the midst of overwhelming nihilism. As someone who has struggled with all those things it hit incredibly close to home, and was the most meaningful experience I’ve ever had playing a video game.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think I came to it with many expectations other than that people praised it for the writing, but I found the characters to nearly universally be abrasive and the story delivered via info dumps.

ech,

That’s not an inaccurate description. Though context is important - most of the characters know yours through behavior and actions that neither you or the character remember. A lot of the game is playing with how you handle that.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

True, but I hated the player character too, and I’d have appreciated a more elegant introduction to the world.

ech, (edited )

I can sympathize with that. The whole game is intentionally bleak and rough, which can be pretty off putting (though it does make the few nice parts exceptionally nice). The devs made a pretty overt choice to focus more on being fairly confrontational art rather than being particularly accommodating to the player.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I think that’s another thing as well, a lot of people go in with the idea that you can to some extent “play as yourself” like you do in many RPGs. And they get frustrated when they’re only given stupid or horrible dialogue options like “why would I ever say any of these things?!”. Because the game is actually rather restrictive in terms of roleplay: yes you can choose your flavour and variety of crazy but at the end of the day you’re always Harry, you’re always insane and damaged and you can’t change that.

For me personally, I’m also an utter failure and I hate myself deeply, so maybe that’s why I easily resonated with the protagonist. And in the end, much of the actual story is about dealing with failure, about finding hope amidst despair and about overcoming and letting go of the past.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I’m totally fine with playing a character who is always a shitty person, but when the world was littered with those characters, it was undesirable to spend any more time in it, especially considering my issues with the story’s delivery as well.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I don’t know how far you got, but you might have gotten unlucky with who you spoke to in game. Lena, Anette, Tommy, Mañana and Roy are all immediately accessible for example and are all rather lovely people, providing some soft contrast to other more abrasive characters.

Can’t say anything about the delivery of the content though. It’s certainly extremely info dumpy and text heavy - part of why I was saying to start with that it’s less than a game and more of a novel.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I read novels too, and there are ways to deliver a story more organically.

duchess,

I personally consider Disco Elysium very much a game (a way better role-playing gamer than most), because an “interactive story” is a game. Combat shouldn’t be a necessary condition. Planescape: Torment should have had the guts to scrap its lackluster combat and focus on its strengths.

MarcomachtKuchen,

Disco elysium is the best book I’ve ever played.

Ketram,

For me Disco Elysium is definitely my favorite of all time if we count it.

If we don’t for some reason, then Hi-Fi Rush is an absolute joy of a game and I’ve loved every second of it. Very obviously a labor of love and far more gamified than Disco Elysium.

bluelander, do gaming w Stay strong this upcoming sale. The game you want but don't have temporarily licensed (AKA "own") is not going anywhere.

I’ve always maintained that it’s a library, not a backlog. A backlog is a chore, a task I have to finish.

A library is a catalogue of new, exciting experiences waiting for me to have them!

I also happen to live in a rural area with radio Internet so when I decide I want to play a game it’s many, many hours for it to install and be playable. Heck, sometimes I can order a physical game and it’ll arrive by delivery faster than I can install it.

Also some console games are still physically on the cartridge/disc and it’s becoming more and more of a rarity. As long as the media and systems hold up you can still actually own these games. It’s sometimes worth not sleeping on these because, as I’m sure we can all see, they’re a drying breed. Same thing with (most) GOG games: if you download and save the backup installers you can have actual ownership over titles purchased there.

www.doesitplay.org is a wonderful resource to find out if a physical game you buy is actually on the media it comes on.

And, unfortunately, some digital games are going somewhere. Delisted games have become a real problem for preservationists. You can find a whole list of them here: delistedgames.com

All that said I support the notion of less consumption and more meaningful consumption when it occurs. Don’t let FOMO get the better of you, be aware that these corpos are not your friend, and take measures to secure the things you wish to have available to you! Host servers, seed torrents, and have backups.

Mario Kart DS

I did play a lot of 64 and Double Dash back in the day but DS is by far my favourite.

cristorf, do games w Which co-op first person shooters would you recommend?

Halo is my top pick, the first three have great stories and couch co-op if you need that, and if you get the master chief collection (halo mcc), the multiplayer is great and you can find tons of forge mode maps created by people, from race modes to mini golf haha

Gears of war is also fantastic, epic story, fun gameplay, and who doesn’t love a chainsaw bayonet lol

Deep rock galactic is another really fun one, I can’t say there’s too deep of a story too it, but it’s endlessly repayable with all the combinations of weapons and procedurally generated missions.

Renacles, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

I’ll be honest, I downloaded Avowed through gamepass and couldn’t stand it for more than 4 hours.

It’s about as dull as a game can be and doesn’t excel at anything, even when compared to games that released 15 years ago.

Do I think it’s garbage? No, but I also would not recommend it to anyone, it’s not worth their time nor money.

MarcomachtKuchen,

What if I from time to time really love some basic gameplay done well? I’ll think avowed is straight up my alley. Not every game I play needs to innovate. There is also a lot of comfort in the preexisting.

Renacles,

That’s fine, have fun then.

maxsettings, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

I’ve learned a long time ago that if you just wait a few years these games will go on sale for $20 and will have enough informed reviews to help make a solid purchasing decision. Gamers need to get off this new release hype train and be patient. I personally won’t play KCD 2, I disliked the first one. I will probably try Avowed in a few years after I get through my existing backlog of ~100 unplayed games in Steam. We are spoiled for choice and the market is filled with good indie games.

MarcomachtKuchen,

Sure but the cheap market would not exist if a majority of people would not buy the game at full price. Sure there are a lot of smart people who don’t fall for the FOMO and hype but if a AAA game would only sell for 30€ it would not offset its development cost and no new game would be made.
