Gonna get Hole and finish Forgive me Father 2.

I’ve been spending a little more time with Forever Winter.

Its very definitely early access; not the bullshit “We’re releasing the game, but calling it early access so you can’t complain about any bugs you find” stuff you get now but actual real old school Minecraft style early access where you’re basically getting alpha builds straight from the developer.

That said, it’s in much better shape than it was when I first looked into it (maybe a year ago?). Game is really fun to play, unbelievably tense, but without being too punishing. I think they’re really starting to zero in on that Dark Souls sweet spot where dying sucks, but not in a way that actually sets you back all that much. The stealth gameplay feels good, and getting out with a haul of loot is intensely satisfying.

Plus the art design is unbelievably good.

I beat Diablo 1 recently which I already written about in another thread. After that I decided to try Atlyss. Too early to give proper feedback, but I must say I enjoy it so far even though I find it a bit strange to have MMORPG gameplay loop in a singleplayer game. It does have lobby-based multiplayer though, and I haven’t tried that yet. Art direction in general is great, but models/textures are extremely lowpoly/lofi (with texture filtering on top of that, going for faithful PSX look I guess). Characters in particular look great, and there is a full-featured furry character creator.

From that big racial justice bundle from Itch, Lenna’s Inception. It’s the game Bytten Studio made before Cassette Beasts. A bunch of things from this game definitely ended up in Cassette Beasts as well.

Kolanaki, do games w Oblivion remake is... really making it apparent how outdated Bethesda is in its approach to making games
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

They literally ssid they kept the mechanics running on the original engine so the game retains its “bethesda charm” and upon playing it, it became immediately obvious that Todd 100℅ believes what was charming about their games is the jank and bugginess. 🤦‍♂️

I really hate the fact that Morrowind was such a landmark, amazing, beautiful game in nearly every way (for the time) and they have managed to regress on every single front from that in every single game they have made after.

winety,

I agree with Todd in the sense that the jankyness is part of Oblivion’s charm. However, I believe that the jankyness only works in a game from 2007, which has weird graphics and an overall surreal vibe. The jankyness is not charming in the dark fantasy of Skyrim nor in the hyper-realistic remake/remaster (whatever people call it).

Darkest Dungeon 2. Really like the dark and sinister style. Narrator has a great voice and the creatures look fantastic.

Gameplay is definitely on the challenging side but I’m enjoying it.

Been playing Tower Networking Inc. Pretty challenging networking game that teaches you how to setup core routes and such. Very fun if you’re a nerd like myself.

Just finished a play through of Dungeons 3. It’s campy and silly but a really enjoyable campaign.

I’m playing Ex Astris! I can’t believe I slept on this game. It’s so good.

Damn… I barely played any of these games… somebody had me try LoL like a decade ago, and I tried PUBG and Pokémon GO on my phone when they were hot, that's it.

rankiwiki,

Totally fine-sometimes the best take comes from fresh eyes. Which non-listed game would you nominate for the next poll?

I must be living under a rock because i’ve never heard of this game. It sounds awesome from the way you describe it.

tobz619,

Oh man, you’re in for a treat! it’s one of my favourites for sure

I think it’s definitely worth trying. I thought it was popularly received but I’m hearing some people were mixed. If you have Game pass I believe it was on there so it’s worth trying

Hadriscus,

It’s a metroidvania of sorts, it’s great from a game mechanic standpoint (lots of ways to beat the game, lots of possible builds for your character), but you do feel very lonely throughout it. The environments manage to stay more or less varied given the fact that you’re on a space station, and the art direction is fantastic.

zaphod,

I think it suffered from being named after another game and a lot of people being confused or disappointed by it having nothing to do with Prey from 2006. It should have gotten a different name. I played it for the first time last year, can recommend.

Lawnman23,

I bought and still have my box and discs for Prey 2006 for PC. Fantastic game at the time, I enjoyed it very much.

Them insisting on having match making for the main modes was my red line. While this nonsense is not a deal breaker for me, as I almost always tryhard a single multiplayer game at a time anyway if I’m playing multiplayer at all. This sounds like I’m dodging another future headache whenever the next game insists on kernel level anti-cheat though.

1 billion means you only earned the first score extend right? I’m very impressed you survived to stage 5 yet didn’t score even close to the 2nd score extend. I think if you figure out how to do a little scoring in the first 2 stages the game will really come alive and you might also pocket the extend at 10billion sometime in stage 4 or so. You clearly have the skills to dodge/bomb/hyper when necessary.

I only played black label (steam version and also an arcade near me has a DFKBL pcb) but the second score extend is basically mandatory for me to get to the end of stage 4 or have a chance of going to stage 5. And before that, getting the first score extend would get me to the hidden extra life in stage 3 etc. Scoring is good for survival and I think it’s fun to play for score even at the level where we can’t currently 1cc. Gives a goal/benchmark for how I’m playing

audaxdreik,
@audaxdreik@pawb.social avatar

Thanks! Yeah, only the first score extend. I’ve been trying to figure out the game on my own since I kinda treat these things as puzzles, but I think I’ve really maxed out what I can understand and it’s time I watch a video or two of a pro playing. I have a general concept of how things work, but I often forget where the hidden bees are. I’ve memorized a bunch of patterns but I still don’t really approach things with a “plan”, mostly just survive and pick up bees when/where I remember them. I also probably hold onto my hypers too long to use on the midboss and endboss, I could be more efficient with them.

Had no idea I was so far off on the scoring, though, oops. I can get the hidden extra on Stage 3 before getting the extend pretty easily, but I’ve only ever been able to get into Stage 5 twice as it is. I thought my barrier was skill, but maybe it’s scoring (AND skill). I appreciate the advice!

I recently tried Star Traders: Frontiers and have been enjoying it. It’s a space RPG with turn based combat and a focus on ship management.
