A new modern take on Sim Life. More genes, neural networks, etc. I loved that game as a kid.

EverQuest! I was pretty young back then, but I remember EQ not having a quest tracker back in the day. You’d talk to NPCs and have to keep track of what they were asking for.

lightninhopkins,

I took that goddamn boat and ran for hours to get my warrior armor only to have no idea how to give the quest item to the centaur guy. I gave it to him and he just said “thanks”. It was brutal, but kinda hilarious in retrospect.

Klaqua, do gaming w What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?

A zomie hord tower defense game that lets you choose google maps as playground.

Imagine defending your hometown, or downtown Munich, Hamburg, London or Paris.

100years,

Are there any games that use street view? A racing game would be amazing.

My girlfriend and I played through the quest line of where we started in Morrowind (I think?) and had a blast, but once we left we were totally lost! I was really engrossed with the story but all of a sudden we’re just doing something completely different. I was quite disappointed and it left me wondering if we had done something wrong or out of order.

Yeah, the zone quests vs. the main quest are not explained very well. I started just after Elsweyr came out and was trying to play through the main quest at the same time I did the zone quest. I didn’t understand why some of the characters showed up in both with different, ah, statuses, shall we say?

Probably the easiest thing to do for continuity is to play through the quests for your faction. They will lead you to the next logical zone. With Morrowind / Vvardenfell, it’s a DLC so it’s a bit outside the main continuity lines. DLC’s can be done at any time, though with some recurring characters, it can be fun to do them after doing the main quests. You’ll sometimes get unique dialogue as the NPC’s acknowledge your previous adventures with them. Release order of the DLC’s is one option. However, the skills you get from the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests can be really helpful, so it’s OK to take a detour and pick those up early on (and they don’t cross over with the main quest).

Some lovely person wrote up a nice guide on the forums about which order to quest in for every faction: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/525351/a-clear-step-by-step-guide-to-playing-eso-in-chronological-order.

comicallycluttered, do gaming w I used to be concerned about a game being too short. Now I worry that it will be too long.

It’s funny, before they were everywhere, open world games were my jam. Now there are only a few where I actually pay attention to the world.

I typically treat open world games as linear in some way. Go from one story/side mission to the next without really bothering to explore. Especially for large games. Some exceptions, but not many. I’ve become a chronic fast traveler and I have no intention of changing that.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the work put into a lot of these games, it’s more that I simply don’t have the energy or time to actually get into it all and it doesn’t bother me that I’m “missing out”.

In general, I just crave linear and relatively short games. If howlongtobeat lists something as more than like 12 - 15 hours for a non-RPG/immersim game, I’m usually out. I’d have to really be enjoying it to stick with something for more than like 20 hours total.

Titanfall 2 is one of the best examples of a fantastic game that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Everything’s tightly packed into a linear, but incredibly well-developed game. It doesn’t stop being fun, and throws new shit at you without being overwhelming, can be beaten in a few days (probably like two if you’re playing in long sessions).

I do sometimes go over that limit with stealth games, often because I play them very patiently and can spend a few hours on a level. But they’re really the exception.

gifflen, do gaming w What are your favorite video games that force you to pull out the pen and paper?

Not quite the same puzzley aspect but check out etrian Odyssey. It’s premise essentially is that you have a dungeon crawler and you have to make the map yourself. There are tools in game for making the map as you go.

nromdotcom,

I’m playing through the Switch re-releases now and they’re great. The mapping controls leave a lot to be desired versus the DS originals, but it was never gonna be as good as that magic.

blindsight,

DS flashcarts are great and cheap, and the DSi can be soft modded to work directly from an SD card. If you can afford it, get a DSi XL for the best DS experience.

nromdotcom,

I gave away my NES, 3DS, Dreamcast, N64, and all related games and peripherals a few years ago cause they were taking up too much room for stuff I barely ever used.

I’ve already played these games on (3)DS back in 2013 or so, so I agree it’s the best way to play em. But I just don’t have the time, money, or space to be a retro game collector (outside of Evercade) anymore so I’ll make do with playing these games on Switch.

Tibert, do gaming w I used to be concerned about a game being too short. Now I worry that it will be too long.

The gaming space may have changed but I’d say it’s because you changed.

You brought in your decision the “worth playing”. Is this game worth to buy or is this game worth my time. When you can give your time a value, you can also compare it to what you are doing and if it’s worth to do that.

I tend to not really do that too much, because gaming is a hobby. If I start to compare it to what I could earn, well it doesn’t give the most “value” in monetary gain or maybe knowledge gain. But that is why it is a hobby for me, not work.

On the other side, is it worth playing? What is the comparison? The price? If you like the game? For me, if I can enjoy it, and come back to it, even if it’s very long (Warframe for example is the one where I have the most hours played), well it’s worth playing to me.

Tho some games are very expensive for the experience they give and some are really s* recently (gollum *cough) and those are not worth playing.

And is it worth playing compared to your other games? Maybe, maybe not? If you wait you can get discounts (at least on pc), and increase the value. And play your backlog in the meantime.

I think that playing the most recent games can be enjoyable but not always the best “value”. Tho I still play “newer” even if I have the backlog, which I use as a filler between releases and “patient gamers” style.

Oh man, last one that made me do that was probably Zork III. I was hand-drawing my own maps to navigate that game. I miss those days.

I’m part of the club! Although tbf I haven’t touched it much since getting it about a year ago (I just haven’t played that much retro stuff these days or most of it has been with my Super Nt).
One great addition I got recently was a 3D printed grip case, it made long play sessions sooo much more comfortable (obligatory “not affiliated” and I’m not the one making these, but I really like the quality which is why I’m linking it here).

As far as what I’ve been playing on it recently… really just pick up and play, SoR 2 or Turtles in Time, but I completed Metroid Fusion (first time) a few months ago on the Pocket (that’s what made me get a grip case, it really wasn’t too great wrt shoulder buttons comfort).

My sister and I had that problem when she started playing. What you have to do is group up and use the wayshrine to travel to them. Even if you’re in the same zone, travel away and travel back and then you should be able to see each other. Hope that helps!

The game is a lot better than when it first came out. Hope you’re able to try it again. Yhere are also reshaders that you can install to make your game look prettier. Give me a holler if you need help!

If anyone has any questions I run this magazine over on kbin! Its lacking content, but that partially cause no one is there to discuss with. I post PvP clips just to get stuff out there but would love further discussion. I do endgame PvE (no perfectas because I'm not a fan of longterm progs) and run with one of the (arguably) best ball groups on Xbox/NA in Cyrodiil.

Game isn't bad overall. Biggest downside is that the open world content is sleep-inducingly easy.

I consider this a selling point!

    HidingCat,

I like exploration and generally mucking around in a MMO; this is why I like base GW2 instead of the expansions (which had me dying a lot). If I wanted a challenge, I'd do WoW raids or play a Souls-like.

    ShinyBiscuit,
    @ShinyBiscuit@beehaw.org avatar

    RAmen ! Totally agree.

    LoreleiSankTheShip,

Personally, I couldn’t get through the main and faction stories because of that. I liked the stories well enough, but getting through them was so tedious because I couldn’t even use all my skills. I don’t know how end game is, I have one max lvl character with a bunch of cp, but I rarely play an mmo for end game content.

If they had like a difficulty slider for the open world content, that would be enough to make me return, but I don’t want to shut down my brain while leveling, that’s not fun at all!
