Just started Stardew Valley because I needed a distraction from the current Fortnite season which I really don’t like. I never touched it because I assumed it would be just like Terraria, but so far it’s so fun!
The upscaling technologies they’ve been building into modern graphics stacks also have benefits for much older games where the performance isn’t necessarily needed. There’s an old game I like to play, Railroad Tycoon 2, which doesn’t run at resolutions higher than 1024x768 and modern upscaling can make that game look absolutely gorgeous despite being 4+ pixels per original pixel. I’m sure it provides similar benefits to emulators and the like too!
My system (a laptop, all I’ve got 'cause I had to skitterflee from doomness v.v ) can’t run much so I’m kinda stuck at “playable” framerates on old games :-\ I kinda hate to admit it but I’ve been playing Borderlands 2 … the Linux version, 'cause the Windows version, which has a bunch of patches and mod support, just doesn’t run well enough for me 😭 Can’t even get any DLC, though I’ve been really wanting to try Gaige. May be too burnt out to enjoy it any more anyway.
Before that was Titan Quest, which just doesn’t really play like I wish it did. Played it a bunch anyway. Bleh.
So now I’m just sitting around trying to avoid losing my mind to boredom or despair. flailyskitters around in circles 😵💫
Isn’t it the same as with every other entertainment system? I grew up with a big brother and a little sister. We only had one PS1, later one X360. We could either play in co-op, or take turns. Sometimes my father would also play on the console, and we’d do something else in the meantime.
What’s different about the Switch? It’s an entertainment system. You insert the game, you play. I don’t have one, but I’m pretty sure it allows for different accounts to be created and each have their own save file, so there’s no need to buy multiple consoles/multiple copies of the same game. You can either play on the go, or hook it to the TV and play with the bigger screen. You are not forced to play party games just because you have a bigger screen, and you are not forced to treat it like a “personal device” just because you are playing on the smaller screen (I also despise the idea of “personal device” for kids: learning to share games is a very important lesson for kids).
Yeah you can have accounts on it but a little different to usual. You launch a game from the home screen then decide who is launching it. For the most part it’s then separate games - however Animal Crossing has one main game then the other accounts on the device simply access the same island like playing multiplayer - but in turns. It’s fucking weird.
Animal Crossing is a special case (and one that made a lot of people angry back when the game released).
One console is tied to one “island”, which means all accounts on the same switch play in the same town. Each has got their own house and inventory, and can contribute to the island in some ways…
But only the main account, who started the save, is “resident representative”, which means they’re the only one who can build or relocate stuff, and who can start community projects needed for the island to progress.
So yeah, all other players have an inferior experience. Which is a bit of a baffling design for a family game such as this.
Another z-shooter like Tribes Vengeance. A different company got the rights to the franchise and tried to make a more realistic physics engine approach in the sequel, Tribes Ascend, but it was not as fun imo. The use of the grappler specifically to slingshot yourself up to fast speeds and to change direction without losing speed were key to the enjoyment and strategy in Vengeance that Ascend never managed to replicate.
Also, I love the shooter moba genre. I loved Monday Night Combat and the sequel, Super MNC. It’s a shame those games never took off. I’ve been really enjoying Deadlock so far and can’t wait to see how it turns out. But more games in that genre would be welcome.
Little side-tangent, but @trslim if you like base-building RTSes, you should check out Earth 2150 if you have not already. It’s old, but it’s imo one of the best out there.
There are 3 factions, each with their own campaign, and very different styles of units, and during the campaign you have a home base that you build, and from which you can build and send out units to your in-progress missions (i.e. build a tank in your homebase, load it into a helicopter, send the helicopter to your in-mission base’s landing zone, and unload tank for use… and vice-versa for keeping units that you build in the mission zone, etc).
Eurasian Dynasty is very traditional tanks and helicopters, and ballistic weapons
United Civil States is bipedal walkers and sleek hovering aircraft, and uses energy weapons
Lunar Corporation is space-y hovercraft with arcing, electric weapons and AOE pulse weapons
There’s tunnel-building and tunnel warfare, which is so damn cool…
There’s unit customization, like choosing the types of weapons for the tanks, building giant bipedal walkers with 3 different weapon systems, etc
There are aircraft and boats, not just ground units
You are using the resources you farm in the mission locations to construct a giant colony ship to escape from Earth, which is a great mechanic to give you a reason to actually extract resources other than just to build more units
Now I have to go reinstall it… xD
There are also Earth 2140 and Earth 2160, but I never fell in love with those 2 (Earth 2160 isn’t bad, and has a cool alien faction that is basically a roaming mothership that builds units, rather than a traditional ‘base’).
Everyone can have their own opinion, but I also encourage everyone to form their own opinion.
In my book the game‘s a fantastic 7/10 cozy game. I don‘t think the game‘s passionless at all. Every Friday evening I‘m in the bar checking what the townfolk is up to and the content is already enough for me to be satisfied for the ten-ish bucks I‘ve paid, the promise of future content is just the cherry on top.
I wouldn‘t recommend this over SDV to someone who hasn‘t played SDV yet, but for someone who‘s done with it, I‘d recommend giving Mistria a shot. Not every game has to be a 200 hours timesink for me, and an hour in Mistria before bed is really just cute, fun, and relaxing - a great cozy game.
I have a Legion Go, not a ROG Ally, so I may be wrong here. But Handheld Daemon (HHD) (included OOTB with handheld images) supports fine TDP/fan controls. You get to it by long-pressing the button that brings up the Quick Access Menu in big picture mode.
Hi, you’re absolutely correct and sorry for being unclear.
I mean precise TDP control (16W or 17W) and custom fan curves. I’ve used HHD, it’s also good. Most people simple switch between power saving / balanced / performance but wanted to go down further to extract a little more juice out of the device.
SimpleDeckyTDP is a bit tricky (open desktop mode - open terminal - paste command) to install but offers more customisation.
I checked the Bazzite documentation for the Ally and it says SimpleDeckyTDP provides more features than HHD so I didn’t experiment with it at all. I prefer using the Decky plugin mainly because it fits with the Bazzite theme better :P
Impressions from watching someone play it: it looks like a clone of Stardew Valley. The music isn’t terrible but I wouldn’t say it’s good. Some mechanics from Stardew Valley that weren’t easy enough were changed, like fishing. I’m not sure that’s bad for everyone, it can just be a casual game to relax.
Fair point. I didn’t find it relaxing, it just felt like a gutted version of Stardew that treats me like I’m not smart enough to figure anything out. Everything has an unskivable tutorial like blacksmithing and cooking. You can’t buy any of your own basic recipes. It just sends them to you automatically in the mail, which is extremely annoying because it undermines player choice. That’s what was kinda annoying to me. Maybe if it was more like old-school RuneScape it would be more relaxing ? That game has no recipes, you just level up and know the recipe by default.
