ArtemisimetrA, do games w Any Roguelike/Roguelite suggestions?

The Dead Cells devs have been putting in work on their multiplayer rogue lite Windblown, which is super fun. Hades 2 is in a great spot and will keep getting better Risk of Rain (1+2) both fantastic

But for really obscure and interesting mechanics and a true rogue like experience: Noita. It’s pixel graphics but every foreground pixel is simulated and there are a craft huge number of interactions between substances and spells. There’s deep lore that you have to be very dedicated to decipher. There’s an actual alchemy system that changes depending on map seed. Oh, and it’s really hard.

Technically not… exactly a rogue like, but:

Deus Ex w/ Randomizer Mod and PermaDeath.

You can set it up fairly easily the Steam version of DX and the Revision Mod, which at this point is basically all the most popular DX mods, reconfigured to play nice with each other and be as mutually compatible as possible.

Someone already mentioned Caves of Qud, that one is amazing, Noita is really good, also StarSector is functionally a roguelike but in space.

Also No Mans Sky is basically a rogue like if you turn on permadeath, kick the difficulty up.

If you’ve got interest in deep simulation mechanics you can check out Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. It’s FOSS and, last I checked, still has an active developer community.

Doom 2016 and Alan Wake 2. Enjoying both of them!

Vinny_93,
jmcs,

Sometime in 3025.

Skipcast,

2026 i think they’ve announced somewhat recently, we’ll see if it actually holds though

jmcs,

I’m old enough to remember the Kickstarter campaign. I lost track of how many release dates flew by since then.

Skipcast,

Yeah they gave up announcing new release dates for it like half a decade ago if not longer lmao, but now they’ve started again. Hopefully it’s true this time.

evujumenuk,

When Squadron 42 finally comes out, it’ll just be considered commentary on contemporary issues. Basically like Job Simulator… in space

leftzero,

Well, they recently showed over an hour of supposedly live gameplay (obviously somewhat spoilery for the start of the game), so there’s some hope at least…

Of course, it remains to be seen how much more of the story is finished to the same extent, and at what point will it be consistently playable on contemporary hardware (I haven’t played Star Citizen in a long while, so I’m not sure what state it’s in, and I don’t know if Squadron 42, being a single player game, will be as susceptible to server issues, or if it’ll even need servers), but it gives a good idea of the state of the main game features and how it’s intended to feel.

CrowAirbrush,

I bought myself into sf before you got a hangar, i only had that one person race ship and after a while they added a hangar where you could spawn and walk around it.

After a while i noticed loads of reviews so i tried playing it, but always ran into issues making it unplayable. So i got really fed up with it for a while.

Then a couple years later i could actually run it with some issues, ended up buying a better ship and i’m now basically waiting for it to release and computer parts to be affordable once again.

I would love for star citizen to be my jam, but i doubt i’ll ever be able to put enough time into it. The most i ever managed to do consistently was diablo 4 season 1 to 3 before i dropped it completely.

snekerpimp,

I mean, they kind of do. It’s just not driven by cut scenes or NPC interaction. Have to read the news and be involved in the off game communities to get into the lore that’s happened in game.

Zahille7,

That’s why a lot of people didn’t engage with the lore of Destiny - you had to go to a website totally separate from the game, link your account old-school Bungie style, and could only access the grimoire cards from said site after you went through the hoops. There was nothing in the game giving you more aside from the NPCs and the few cutscenes themselves. Not even a link to take you to the site from the game itself.

Almost every other game has an in-game lore/info screen talking about the world and characters of the game.

illi,

Pretty sure the in-universe news can be read in game.

I have a faint memory of them introducing a feature of text to speech for them as well, not sure I might be imagining this. Long time since I played.

austinfloyd,

Oh man, I love Noita so much, but it can be so difficult at times.

LaserTurboShark69,

Lunacid is definitely not a roguelike

I just started Deathloop over the weekend.

The VA work is amazing, and it controls a lot like Dishonored, but there’s less emphasis on stealth and more on playing how you want. I’ve been able to blend stealth and regular gunplay, and it still feels nice and balanced. The AI seems to have much more awareness and combat ability, so picking how and where to pick people off or start a gunfight is fun!

And since the game is based around time travel, choosing not to kill some people might open up future paths. It’s great!

Woohoo!! 💛 I’ve been curious, I know some of them didn’t make it until the new year. How’s it been? They recently asked devs if they wanted to test web request support so it’s exciting times!

My partner and I got Baldurs Gate 3 and it has been a delight. We pass the ps5 controller so we each get an npc during combat and do splitscreen for the world. She’s a dragonborn paladin and I’m a tiefling warlock, we spent the weekend clearing out a dungeon of goblins!

Is local coop different from online coop? I’m playing through the game with a friend right now, and we both have our own small party, and control two characters in a fight. Or maybe I just misunderstood what you meant.

GammaGames,

It is different, at least according to the threads I found! In split screen they’re all from Player 1’s party and the second player only controls their character. local multiplayer is a little janky, sometimes player 2 turns invisible and the only way to fix it is to force a cutscene

chloyster,

It’s been awesome! Despite seeing videos and images I was seriously not prepared for how small and cute it is 😍. The crank is so awesome too haha. Mainly I’ve checked out the 2 Season 1 games I have access to off the bat, and I obviously had to buy Mars after Midnight. Damn that game is awesome. Also wow web request support that’s so cool! It definitely seems like a really vibrant community :)

GammaGames,

MAM is charming and so well put together, the dev’s interview on the podcast was a fun listen too, if you’re into that! Enjoy the rest of the season 😄 you’ve got a looot coming up

I should get back to Great Circle, but I dug my 3DS out recently and started Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. My first time playing the series and I'm enjoying it.

Also slowly making my way through the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star - a game I've been enamored with since the SMS days, but never given a lot of time. The Ages features make it so much more accessible.

Still in early access, and not very pleasant to looking at first glance, but Ostronauts is a start from scratch go anywhere and solve problems space game. On my first play I was pulled over but the cops for salvaging without a license only for the cop to write me a ticket and then start flirting with me. I got his number. Make sure you can cover the cost of the ticket and docking fees before you dock or they won’t let you undock. Flight mechanics are very real and you quickly feel like your piloting a space jalopy. RPG system is great too. You unlock skills that level as you use them and need to repair components as they can break down. Slow development by I think one guy, but a work of love for sure.

winety,

Ostranauts looks cool as heck! I’ve added it to my wishlist.

I had a vastly different experience with the great circle.

I’m trying to get through the Phantom Liberty dlc of CP2077. It keeps crashing and I find it annoying.

I’m about 160 hours into Pathfinder: Kingmaker and I can’t say for certain if it’s a good game or not. It’s certainly captured my obsessive attention, and there are parts of it that I really enjoy. However, the game is also frustrating and messy and the two halves of CRPG on one side and kingdom management sim on the other really don’t mesh well. It’s also a complete nightmare for any completionist with the huge amount of timed quests, many of which never announce their timer publicly. The encounter design also doesn’t feel great and the difficulty is often unfun - though there are some menu settings that can mitigate some of that.

The writing also feels very hit-and-miss.

True and real

JeanMichelVase, do games w Any Roguelike/Roguelite suggestions?

In the style of Slay The Spire : Griftlands, Monster Train, Wildfrost, Accross The Obelisk, Dicey Dungeons (kinda)

More action oriented : Risk of Rain Returns, Risk of Rain 2 (both games are awesome and quite different), Rogue Legacy 1 & 2, Gunfire Reborn, Spelunky 1 & 2

Unique : Balatro, Noita, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Cultist Simulator, Ballionaire, Luck Be A Landlord

Feel free to search about any of these games or ask some questions about them.

spireghost,

Would not recommend Crypt of the Necrodancer, considering barely anybody ever beats the game even by default, and then completing the full story is far too hard to not be frustrating

JeanMichelVase,

Can’t say it’s not difficult, but it’s not a reason to not talk about it. OP may be one of the 10% who could finish it.

For people who found it to difficult, Cadence of Hyrule is the same concept ported in the Zelda universe. It’s easier, more forgiving and if you die, you don’t have to start all over again. And its musics are awesome, Zelda music remixed by Danny Baranowski.
