Elevator7009sAlt, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

Makes me appreciate reviews that are able to give pros and cons to the game, and the ones that are able to say an opinion between “best game ever” and “absolute trash”. Which I still often see on the Steam reviews, usually voted as one of the Most Helpful!

MeatsOfRage, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

People are more likely to go online and complain than to compliment. But why take internet comments so seriously. I have a handful of trusted sources that I use to get my opinions on games. DLC Podcast for example is a favorite of mine. I’ve gotten to know their tastes and where they overlap with mine so when they get excited about a specific thing I’ll know if I’m likely to enjoy it based on our shared interests.

When you get a handful of voices that have a strong overlap with your own taste then you can get outside of the tribalistic bitching of the hive. Comments don’t even concern me anymore.

ytsedude,

Good ole Jeff Cannata!

MeatsOfRage,

Yup! Also the other host Christian appeals to the Sega kid in me. He’ll uncover gems that evoke the Dreamcast era.

jeffreyosborne, do gaming w ~~Game codes giveaway (GOG, Microsoft Store, Xbox)~~ (no codes left)

I’m personally not interested in any of the games, but I wish the best of luck to the people that are hoping to win one! I like this, it’s better than letting the codes go to waste

masterspace, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

Also, from a mechanistic standpoint I think that mostly has to do with the high cost of entry for games.

At $80-$100 for a full priced game these days, it’s hard to just buy on a whim. The only time you would is when they’re on sale, which happens well after initial release. So initial sales of games are basically entirely driven by reviews and online discourse (which itself has an effect on reviews), and you basically just have a bunch of people all waiting for the signal to buy or not.

I do think that services like Gamepass are a genuinely good way of reducing that effect, because now anyone can try anything on a lark.

TomSelleck, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

It’s been a problem for awhile. The media needs clicks so saying something is 7.5/10 doesn’t really drive engagement. Gamers have especially fed into this narrative because the media surrounding new products is always filled with hype and billed as the next greatest thing. It’s caused justified pushback from the community, but I think the pendulum has swung a bit in the other direction now. It’s tough feeling lukewarm about something when you’ve been told it’s supposed to be great. Additionally, the publishers, and some developers, in this industry are greedy cutthroats, which has made them easy targets for people’s frustration. The problem is now that frustration is focused on EVERYTHING involving the games industry.

Zangoose, do games w suggest me some games!!
@Zangoose@lemmy.world avatar

Not exactly story rich but 2D platformers like Celeste, Hollow Knight, Nine Sols, and Ori will definitely run on your computer and are probably among my favorite games of all time (haven’t played much of Nine Sols yet though so I can’t really speak for that one)

There’s also emulated games, PS1, PS2, pretty much any Nintendo system up to the Wii/3DS etc. which will work on slower/older generation laptops.

Contramuffin,

Ori is probably going to struggle a bit on a laptop

Zangoose,
@Zangoose@lemmy.world avatar

Should’ve clarified, I think blind forest (the first one) should run fine? The second one would probably cause issues though.

jroid8,

The second game was released to the switch so it should be fine I think

ViscloReader,

No, case in point, I tried on my laptop. The switch has a gpu, this guy hasn’t.

Zangoose,
@Zangoose@lemmy.world avatar

Late response but now that I think about it the AMD Vega iGPUs actually have a decent chance at running it at like 720p if the switch can run it. Yeah the switch has an Nvidia GPU but it’s also integrated graphics on a tablet processor that was already a generation old in 2017 when it came out. Most of the fancy gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally basically just use clocked down laptop CPUs with only the iGPU anyway. A 3500u is pretty old at this point (and windows 11 eating RAM will probably be an issue) but you should probably be able to get ~30-60fps on a lot of indie/AA games if you run them at 720p/1080p with lower settings

ViscloReader,

For Ori 1, for Ori 2 you have to fiddle with the settings a bit more to get 25fps average but it’s doable👍

Loved the new games, though Youngblood was the weakest. I wish Arkane would have made more of them, instead of being forced to do that live service shit Redfall.

Edit: I mixed up the studios, the new WE games were developed by Machinegames, Arkane only helped with Youngblood.

MilitantAtheist,

Wat.

bestagon,

I do wish we had more of these but they were made by machinegames who just put out the new Indiana Jones game which has been favourably received. I’ve been meaning to check it out

slaacaa,

Ah, you’re right I mixed them up. Arkane only helped with Youngblood a bit. Yes, the Indiana Jones game was really good, I loved it

Whitebrow, do gaming w Most Comparable Headset To Kingston HyperX Cloud II’s in 2025?

If you like the headset, I suggest just getting the same one, wait for a sale or check price trends, these typically go on sale fairly often, be it the 2 or 3’s, the battery life is good, they’re fairly comfortable and if you have no specific reason to change to something else, using the same model will net you more or less the same experience as you had before

QuantumSparkles,

I’ve never had the cloud II tbh, but that’s the only ones I’ve ever seen that had consistent reviews… up until they sold to HP and now they’re shit. I’m just wanting something within the same price range and level of quality as the original version that’s been so raved about

Whitebrow,

Personally I have a pair of the cloud alpha, and had them for about 2 years now, they’re very good for what they are

I can’t speak to their other cheaper headsets but with this one I got, I feel that the quality between friends who had the version before it and the ones that were purchased by a colleague last month don’t really differ much in terms of quality.

Again, I can’t speak to their stinger line or other models. Maybe those were affected more by the HP acquisition.

LovableSidekick, do gaming w Wish I could retire now actually

I’ve never understood people who get bored in retirement. I looked forward to it from the very start of my career, and now that I am retired I’ve gotten so into hobbies and interests that it feels like there still isn’t enough time for everything.

NauticalNoodle,

Here’s to hoping we still have the physical ability to engage with those hobbies and interests.

menemen,
@menemen@lemmy.ml avatar

Lol to thinking that it was better. Capitalism was always terrible for normal people.

But many people just don’t have a lot of hobbies. Change is also scary for many people.

LovableSidekick,

Objectively I know millions of people simply go to work, come home, eat dinner, watch TV and go to bed. Repeat until dead. I just personally find it hard to relate to that frame of mind. Maybe they fear retirement would be boring because their lives are already boring and the only stimulation they get is at work - but to me that’s sad to imagine.

LovableSidekick,

Oh yeah I forgot, careers were an endlessly fulfilling series of fun exciting tasks. And job interviews were like, “A white male with a college degree? You’re hired!” Everybodty’s ignorant fantasies about the past are staggeringly accurate!

menemen,
@menemen@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, I also have 5 hobbies and many more interests. I am only scared that I don’t have enough energy left in me once I retire.

LovableSidekick,

It’s amazing how much energy you get from waking up without the obligation to go somewhere and work on somebody else’s shit all day because you have to. Gives me a big smile every morning!

menemen,
@menemen@lemmy.ml avatar

I work in public infrastructure, so at least I can comfort myself that I am trying to improve the lifes of everyone in my area. Still exhausting.

LovableSidekick,

Exactly. I was lucky to be in a field where I actually enjoyed the work itself (writing software) - it just didn’t leave much time or energy to geek out with my own projects like I can now. But it was worth waiting for.
