Which Nancy grace? THAT Nancy grace?

halcyoncmdr,

Of course not.

Nancy Grace Roman

There’s a First, Middle, and Last name there.

Do you just ignore words when reading? Is everyone on the Internet illiterate? Because comment sections everywhere seem to indicate it’s a very high percentage.

firafaj934, do astronomy w Boiling oceans may lurk beneath the ice of solar system's smallest moons

Saturn’s moon Enceladus and many other ice-covered moons orbiting the outer planets are believed to conceal vast subsurface oceans beneath their frozen shells. These hidden seas, trapped between layers of ice and rocky cores, make such moons some of the most promising locations in our solar system to search for extraterrestrial life. A new study published on November 24 in Nature Astronomy offers fresh insights into the internal dynamics of these worlds, helping scientists better understand the processes unfolding beneath their surfaces. The findings also shed light on how the moons’ striking and varied geological features may have formed over time. Official Site

zleap, do astronomy w Boeing's troubled capsule won't carry astronauts on next space station flight
@zleap@techhub.social avatar

@AmbiguousProps t

Is thus such a bad thing, as humans explore and spend more time living / working in space, we are going to need a way to get people to / from space, but also supplies, if Boeing can be part of the supply solution.

AmbiguousProps,
@AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today avatar

Sure, they can be a part of the supply solution. But these capsules were originally designed for transport of astronauts, and the supply side has much more competition.

zleap,
@zleap@techhub.social avatar

@AmbiguousProps

Good point, what was the main issue with the capsule? or was it with the rocket that took this in to space?

There is also perhaps going to be a need to transport items to from facilities in space, if we build a new ISS and also build one orbiting the Moon, then items / people need moving around.

I have often thought we need like they have on Star trek, shuttles or runabouts (DS9).

AmbiguousProps,
@AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today avatar

There’s quite a lot of issues, but the main issue is with the thrusters not firing properly, which could cause astronauts to get stranded in space. It could also prevent getting the heat shield in the proper position for re-entry, both are dangerous, obviously.

A human rated spacecraft is orders of magnitude more complex and expensive than a mere cargo carrier. Developing a human rated capsule and then only using it for cargo would be ridiculously wasteful.

SweetCitrusBuzz, do astronomy w Scientists look to black holes to know exactly where we are in the Universe. But phones and Wi-Fi are blocking the view
@SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, we need fewer satellites really.

As for the rest, that’s not easily solved.

Based on what we know about the universe, isn’t this pretty obvious? I’d rather see estimates for how much water?

FundMECFSResearch,

The big discovery was salty water, not water.

Gloomy, do astronomy w Event horizon: After photographing black holes, scientists are now making a movie
@Gloomy@mander.xyz avatar

They have quite big plans, but almost 14. Million € on hand. I hope they manage to achieve their goal.

We produce for the first time high-resolution multi-colour movies with the EHT combined with new telescopes probing the variable extremes of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g. CTA, MeerKAT/SKA1). The data are analysed and interpreted with innovative models finally combining micro- and macrophysics. The PIs bring together complementary expertise over the entire black hole mass scale in radio imaging and multi-wavelength monitoring, astroparticle physics, and theoretical modelling to bear on the problem. This is accompanied by four major investments: construction of a new mm-wave telescope in Africa enabling full dynamical imaging of black holes with the EHT, new model development, supercomputing hardware, and a vibrant team of young scientists to help develop a new, truly universal black hole paradigm.

Mango, do astronomy w Astronomers discover biggest ever seen black hole jets, which blast hot plasma well beyond their own host galaxy

If it can be infinitely dense inside a black hole, doesn’t that mean the scale doesn’t matter and that the ‘inside’ is pretty much it’s own whole universe with different physics rules?

imakeninjascry, do astronomy w Astronomers discover biggest ever seen black hole jets, which blast hot plasma well beyond their own host galaxy

Mathematically, it’s possible, but scientists are still skeptical about whether or not they are real. They’re called white holes and you can actually create a model of one in your kitchen sink. If you let the water just hit the bottom and spread out evenly in all directions, you can kind of visualize the way it’s supposed to work. Action Lab on YouTube actually has a pretty good video about it which I suggest watching if you’re interested. youtu.be/p3P4iKb24Ng?si=b3_RHuj0J3F_7DC1
