If your kill things before they can hit you, defence is worthless
And that comes from a guy who almost always plays as a tank
Too few games now (from all I’ve been playing) care about tanking, one of the few exception I’ve seen is Warframe, because they crank up everything to 11 (DPS, crowd control, tanking, …)
Great to see another update. One of my buddies is practically a game industry savant so I always feel a bit out of my depth with him. Reading this is my cheat sheet for talking points with him.
Who do you know of that talks about games as art? That’s more my focus, and the only one that really seems to tick that box for me is Noah Gervais - and he’s great, but I would love more variety if you know anyone doing pieces like that.
Cara Ellison. She’s touched on it before, that I’ve noticed when writing for The Guardian - how strong videogames are for the medium of telling stories, and also for expressing art.
Matthewmatosis on YouTube, does some great work on at least the artistic choices teams make when creating the games
Critical Distance is a good site, critiquing games as a serious art form
I mean…this is in my eyes, and in my experience reading them. The thing about art is though…it’s so damned subjective, so what I found related to that point, you might find is totally, totally off-the-mark!
There is nothing to update to. It is a completely different game in the way it’s built from java and bedrock. And after the last update it stopp3d being supported so even if you could update via console as I said you have nowhere to go. Kinda like if you tried updating civ 5 with civ 6 stuff. They are differnet games even though they play the same in concept.
What I don’t understand is why games look prettier but things like NPC AI (which is really path-finding and decision trees, not actual AI), interactivity of the game world, destructability of game objects - all those things are objectively worse than they have been in a game of 10-15 years ago (with some exceptions like RDR2).
How can a game like Starfield still have all the Bethesda jank but now the NPCs lack any kind of daily routine?
Most enemies in modern shooters barely know how to flank, compare that to something like F.E.A.R. which came out in 2006!
from the image it seems like you’re expecting a fourth dimension in games now? I don’t think you’d like the development cycle on that. miegakure is still on the way is it?
I’m looking forward to doing LASO with my friends, i’ve already got two of them recruited to help. The customization of your character sticking to your Noble Six definitely makes it more fun too. So instead of 4 master chiefs or Master Chief, Arbiter, and two Elites, it feels more like it’s actually you and your friends.
For sure lol. I’m definitely the calmest out of my friend group and I think even I would get a little ticked off at the game if we had to restart a whole level. So definitely making sure the friends I recruit to help know what they’re getting into
Excellent post! Any time I see one of these from you I’m going to upvote and comment just in case it gets it onto more screens.
I still haven’t tried the steam deck, but it seems like such an awesome system. I won’t be in the market for one any time soon but maybe by the time I am, there will be a Deck 2.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I dunno if you are aware but there’s also a steam deck sub here and they’d probably be happy if this was posted there too.
