iNeedScissors67, do gaming w Best sub-20 hour games?
@iNeedScissors67@kbin.social avatar

I'd look at Telltale-style games. They're roughly 10 hours each ( five 2-hour ish episodes) and are almost entirely story driven. The gameplay is usually very simple. You choose dialogue choices to drive the story.

The best Telltale games are in my opinion: The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, The Walking Dead, Batman: The Telltale Series and its sequel, Batman: The Enemy Within. They're also releasing the first episode of The Expanse (based on the TV show since the character Camina Drummer does not exist in the books) later this month.

Another series that is very much that same style but by different devs is the Life is Strange series. I've played the first one and the prequel called Before the Storm. They are very emotionally heavy stories so I'm taking some time before I can go into the sequels but I absolutely love that series and will preach it to anyone who will listen.

10 hours is definitely short but it also helps that they are all done in 2-hour episodes so you can easily take breaks.

Here are two 3D platformers I haven’t really heard a lot of but still had very fun with last year.

Demon Turf - 335 Reviews What pulled me in initially was the art syle, the games looks a bit like the cartoons from my childhood. This one got combat, exploration, bosses, collectables. A bit of a problem is that the game tried to do a lot of things at the same time, resulting in a bit uneven quality overall. There are also leaderboards if you into speedrunning.

Demon Turf: Neon Splash - 105 Reviews Some kind of standalone DLC/spinoff to the first game. In this game everything is more streamlined and the design feels more focused. Combat have been cut in order to give the platforming more time to shine and a reason to simplify the controls. The focus is on repeating the same levels for better a time on the leaderboard. Speedrunning is not really my thing but I still found enjoyment in the game. Much cheaper and short than Demon Turf.

If you like choose your adventure games, the game I released in 2016 is on sale. …steampowered.com/…/The_Away_Team_Lost_Exodus/ 58 reviews. Mostly positive.

Hieracosphinx,

This looks like something a friend of mine will absolutely love. I’ll be sure to share it with them!

Boundless

This is probably my favorite game, it’s going through a rough patch right now because development had halted for about a year and was then sold to another company last year who are still in the process of transferring everything over. I’m hoping for new development within another year because it’s an awesome game, but it’s been stagnant for a long time. It’s not on sale, but they’ve discussed a lower price for it openly after they get things rolling. We’ll see.

Poosh XL 152 reviews. An arcade high score chaser with a neon aesthetic.

Plume, do gaming w How many steam deck folks are here and what are you playing?

Last game I played on it, yesterday, was Just Cause 3. It’s… not great. The game just doesn’t run consistently enough and is too CPU heavy.

I recently played Red Dead Redemption 2 on it, that was great. Surprisingly so. I’m playing Skyrim now. I’ve had the game for years but never took the time to properly get into it. I beat the main quest and messed with mods back in the day but that’s it.

Now, I’m playing it vanilla and I want to just go deep into the game, completely ignoring the main quest, I don’t want to be the hero, if the universe needs saving, it can find someone else. Khajiit have caves to explore and stuff. Oh and the new Survival Mode is neat!

przmk, do games w whats a game that you got significantly far into, only to realize you were doing something wrong or missing a key feature/ability altogether?

When I was a kid, I used to “play” Operation Flashpoint. I remember being too dumb to realise that the mouse was used to move the camera so it was basically me moving around with arrow keys and strafing to see a little to the left and right.

Great list thanks.

Prox, do gaming w What forgotten cult classic games are worth revisiting?

Hybrid Heaven on N64. Great game with a super interesting battle mechanic. I’ve never played anything else quite like it. Maybe The Surge would be the closest system, wherein you can target specific body parts for interesting effects. But you can’t suplex an alligator in The Surge.

welcome again… and i stopped pirating movies and started streaming over internet on pirate website.

azayrahmad, do games w whats a game that you got significantly far into, only to realize you were doing something wrong or missing a key feature/ability altogether?

One of the first computer games I’ve ever played is StarCraft. For context, the game is about human battle with aliens similar to Starship Troopers. The game story has three acts, each from different point of views. It is supposed to start from human pov, and then alien pov, and lastly another alien species. However due to English being my second language, I somehow started with the alien pov first. So my first impression of the game is that I play as a disgusting xenomorph alien species battling mankind. It’s not until later that I realized I missed an entire human chapter of the game.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I was almost done with the game before I realized you leveled up in camps and inns. Game went from really hard to pushover easy in 5 minutes.

TheWozardOfIz,

That combat system is dope once you get like 25 hours in lol

You know of any other Oregon Trail remixes? Been looking for a game like those ever since I was a little kid.

Hieracosphinx,

Just in case you weren’t aware, The Oregon Trail is on Steam as a remake now, but I haven’t read much about it. I like the colorful style they chose for it though. There’s also the still unreleased Journey Express which looks very similar. Anyway, here’s some other stuff:

  • Organ Trail is the closest to Oregon Trail I think you can get on Steam. Players control a group in the zombie apocalypse instead of journeying to the western frontier.
  • Death Road to Canada captures the same sort of travel with small events interspersed that Oregon Trail had, but plays quite a bit differently…
  • Super Amazing Wagon Adventure is an Oregon Trail-themed shooter.
  • The Flame in the Flood is about traveling by raft but more about survival in the modern gaming sense than Oregon Trail was.
  • FTL is super well known, but pretty comparable. You could also try Trigon Space Story.
None_S,

Thank you. That Journey express looks interesting. Have you been following that project for a while?

Hieracosphinx,

To be honest I only just stumbled across it when writing up my original response. Made a quick check on steampeek.hu to see if there was any game I didn’t know about or was forgetting and it popped up.

Dymonika,

I’d be happy to show you Death Road to Canada at no cost to you through Steam Remote Play with my copy! The only catch is that you’d need a gamepad since it doesn’t take multiple players on one keyboard.

MJBrune,

I made a choose your own adventure that’s been called Oregon trail like bigbossbattle.com/the-away-team-review/ I don’t know if it truly embodies Oregon trail though.

None_S,

Thanks

In LOZ: Breath of the Wild, I didn’t think to check if you could use the Sheikah Slate on Eventide Isle (where they take away all your items and clothes). I’m proud to say I beat that challenge with ZERO tools!

fidodo,

In totk I wanted to explore as early as possible so I didn’t know the glider was still in the game until I got to a tower without it. I just figured with all the new travel options they figured it wasn’t needed anymore
