Steam Deck seems to be a good fit. If you wanna get a gaming laptop, maybe wait until there’s one where you can easily swap out the batteries / components. I’ve seen videos about Framework laptop, and that does sound like a good investment for longer period.
I heard there were issues with ROG Ally, the device gets too hot, and the fan exhaust was near the SD card slot. So it frequently dislodges the SD cards from the slot because of the heat.
Check out other Assassin’s Creed games! I agree that Red Dead Redemption is anther good suggestion. I suggest the first one as well. Maybe Fable? The second one was my favorite, but people rave about the first one as well. I didn’t play the first one until I didn’t have as much time to game.
This might be a miss, but the Sims can be insane with mods. You can cheat their needs and not worry about those. Sims 3 is open world and the best of the series, but I’m not as familiar with the mods available for it. There are Sims 4 mods that introduce murder (guns and knives provided of course), drugs and gangs, zombies, prostitution, murderous toddlers, and much more that I can’t think of right now.
Modders are fucking lunatics when it comes to the Sims. Someone made a mod for Sims 3 where you could grill and eat a baby. EA stepped in to shut that down…

I remember this! It was the OMGWTFBBQ. I only remember a Sims 2 version, though. The Sims 2 version can still be downloaded here, it’s just not on modthesims.info anymore.
I agree with the other Assassins creed games. At least with Odyssey, that’s what I played most. You can explore all of ancient Greece and there are lots of really good and fun side quests. Just don’t think of it as a pure stealth game, like the first game was, more like an action adventure with stealth elements, or you might be a bit disappointed.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided can be played as stealth games, and I really liked them. Note that they aren’t “pure” stealth games, there are some encounters where you cannot avoid fighting.
Also DE:MD kind of ends in the middle, so if you are a story player you will be frustrated to know that there seem to be no plans for the next sequel.
Yeah HR had unavoidable combat bosses in its original release. The Director’s Cut modded them all to allow for dealing with them by alternative means, such as hacking, robot/turret control and such. But because they weren’t originally designed that way it’s not the most organic, and you can’t pure stealth bypass them like the original Deus Ex.
Adding on to this I heartily recommend MGS V. It is the culmination of the MGS formula in a mostly open world. While I love Kojima's bullshit, the previous MGS games had deep mechanics that you rarely got to play with because most the games were movies with an occasional game.
The story is kind of all over the place but the gameplay more then makes up for for it.
MGS1 is available on GOG, but it’s definitely got that early 3D vibe that OP doesn’t seem to like. I think it’s aged pretty well, considering it’s a PS1 title.
I love RimWorld, and I love DRM-free, but RimWorld on GoG is a mistake.
Instead, buy RimWorld directly from Ludeon. Then you get both DRM-free files from them (to enjoy in the fallout bunker), AND a steam key (so that you can easily enjoy the metric boatloads of modding content on the steam workshop).
I actually hate chores in video games now. Especially travelling around in games where I know the map like the back of my hand. Recent example for me is Hollow Knight. Amazing game but I’m pretty far into it and can’t be bothered with the back and forth now.
There’s this game on the original macintosh that’s been my white whale for decades. A samurai/ninja game with a heroes of might and magic style overworld map and and a fighting game style screen with a dense bamboo forest in the background. I’ve gone through a bunch of archives and I just can’t seem to find it
We had a fighting game on NES. Japanese game, and we didn’t even speak English (okay, maybe a few words), let alone Japanese.
There was literally nothing to quote in my search, apart from just using descriptions. It was frustrating, because otherwise it was one of the best NES games I have played.
Years later I somehow ran into it. It was something like Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu.
Technōs had a whole line of sports games in this ‘super deformed’ style and with outlandish mechanics, as offshoots of the ‘Kunio-kun’ series. The games I know are lots of unadulterated fun.
It’s interesting you are disappointed in the art style - it makes more sense, though, if you haven’t played HOMM3. Because the map art style and layout feels very HOMM3, moreso than the other 3D modernization attempt in HOMM5 (which I hated). My guess is you would have really enjoyed HOMM3, if this one plays how it looks.

I am certain that I would love HoMM3, but it’s just one of those games that I’ve never gotten around to sampling. As a kid, it was purely an access thing, but, as an adult, it’s a case of wanting that sweet nostalgia sauce drizzled over the meat and potatoes HoMM gameplay. Therefore, when the SRPG urge strikes, I find myself reaching for 2. I’ve heard nothing but good things about 3 though, so perhaps it’s high time to advance a little. Besides, I can only betray Roland for that sweet Archibussy so many times before it gets a little old.
My reservations about the art style aside, I think fans of the series would do well to check out the demo. I don’t pretend to be an expert, but, the price is right, and the gameplay feels very solid to me.
I checked out their FAQ, and it seems like the HoMM3 version of the fheroes2 project (or maybe vice versa, I’m not sure which came first).
I noticed that one of the features of VCMI was a totally reworked AI. Do you have insight into how that feels vs base game AI? A minor concern I have about these sort of fan projects is that the contributors tend to be among the most passionate and knowledgeable fans of the base game around, and their tweaks are balanced around that level of game knowledge.
Judging by the CRT monitor at 18 and the LCD at 23, I assume OP is around 40 now. Maybe they just omitted the ~17 years worth of panels where they got out of the house and did something else.
well over if they had a trubo button at ten. I would estimate upper forties like 47 but could be a bit younger. Under 45 and they were using some old stuff which would be wierd since that game system at 5 does not look atari. looks like an snes which would then make them 30 or so. I feel like lcd was gaining traction late oughts though which goes back to about 40.
Pretty sure that’s an NES - look closely at the controller, it’s got the 2 red buttons which were pretty iconic. That’d suggest they were 5 between about 1985 and 1990, which suggests they’re 40-45 now.
Same, when it comes to games with vast scope and scale of a universe, it’s either this, Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen.
Elite Dangerous feels very “cockpitty” even with recent updates, it’s just not very pretty or engaging and I’ve tried several times to launch myself into it. VR was amazing for a little while, but still felt very “yellow cockpit” after a bit and a dark field of stars everywhere you look.
Star Citizen was very engaging for a bit, the open-world PVP, realistic scale, social, busy world and hyper-realism and absolutely beautiful environment have sooooo much potential, I log in annually and stand in a viewing area on a space station and just look out at the universe… but that’s it, I don’t like the janky, unpolished controls, the broken missions and lack of personalization/incentive to survive. I would even take very basic survival mechanics like base making, farming, upgrading skills and devices and places to loot and gather furnishings like No Man’s Sky. There should be a reason you want to get a crew together and hang out in a personalized ship.
No Man’s Sky feels a lot like “less intuitive minecraft” and I think I rather just play minecraft if I want to dig and build in a colorful, cartoonish world. The whole "harvest oxygen and swamp gas and process it with tungsten dust and then turn that dust into widgets which you refine into super widgets… it gets grindy and off-putting because it’s not comfortably accessible, it’s not intuitive, and that’s where my biggest beef with NMS is, the lack of an intuitive direction or goal and the feeling that there’s just too many lonely planets and not enough rewarding experience in spending so much time landing on each. Even if it was an actual MMO it would be more engaging.
