Started playing God of War (2018) again. I played through it twice on the PS4 and now playing through it for the first time on the PC. This is the best God of War game in my opinion.

The World of Warcraft Pre-Expansion Event went live this week, and it was complete garbage. The event got changed two days later, which fixed basically everything wrong with it, and now it’s pretty good. I managed to level almost all my level 60 characters to max through the event, since it barely takes an hour each. Basically none will ever see any serious playtime though, and will just collect dust again.

Then I just finished the Solasta: Crown of the Magister - Lost Valley DLC and enjoyed it much more than the base game. The gameplay is still D&D, no changes there, but the setting is much smaller this time. You’re not on some world-saving quest or killing a god, but a very confined area, with about a dozen locations you can visit (plus sub areas like caves or dungeons). Your party gets trapped in a valley and has to find a way out. There are people living in the valley, complete with a city and everything, but there’s kind of a civil war going on, so you gotta pick a side and which faction to support. Due to my choices, the ending was kind of unspectacular, but still fine. Since there are multiple factions, who are at war, and you can’t please everyone, there’s stuff you can’t do in a single playthrough (mainly quests and dialogue, not locations I think). Since the DLC is on the shorter side, you’re encouraged to play through it multiple times, but I most likely won’t do that. I do however look forward to the second DLC campaign, Palace of Ice, which I’ll probably won’t play for a few months.

Next week, Diablo 4 Season 5 will start, which I look forward to. This time I’ll play a Sorcerer. Let’s hope it’s not another bust, like the Minion Necromancer last time.

DEMON’S TILT and XENOTILT are both pretty cool. Other than that you can get Space Cadet from Github.

Three of four Pro Pinball games are available on GOG. They’re probably on the more realistic side of pinball games, effectively simulating a single table down to aspects like scratching, aging and blemishes. That’s all optional though, you can just install and play. I don’t know how well they’ve aged since it’s been a few years since I last touched one of them. But I’ve always found them fun, with great visuals and sound, even though I’m pretty inept at pinball in general.

The bulk of my finds come from chat either on Lemmy communities (!jrpg, !patientgamers, or this one) or a couple Discord servers I’m on. Sometimes a game will catch my eye unexpectedly while I’m on OpenCritic looking up something else, too.

Otherwise it’s generally gaming news. I get that from also Lemmy/Discord, my RSS feed, or showcases. I always end up wishlisting half a dozen games during the summer showcases. My RSS feed right now is DualShockers, Eurogamer, Gematsu, PCGamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, Siliconera, and Denfaminicogamer (Japanese site). Always open to more suggestions for the feed; the problem is not everyone does RSS these days.

One of the last Web 1.0 bastions in gaming. Really hate to see this, especially when Discord is around the peak of its popularity right now. Here’s hoping a more future-proof alternative than that arises.

I’ve been progressing through Divided Reigns. Very indie, retro JRPG. The story reminds me of FFIV & FFVI in good ways. Battles are much more involved then the aforementioned classics though: while remaining turn based there are plenty of types, effects and skills involved. A rage meter brings in some form of planning ahead between turns, somewhat like Octopath Travellers or Bravely Default. All around solid game. Only downside is the dialogs being sometimes pretty silly.

Been playing Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla as well. So here’s my theory: inside Ubisoft there are two wolves. The first wolf is made up of thousands of creative, talented, diverse artisans working hard to make the open world formula fun and beautiful. The second wolf is a handful of suits looking for ways to milk the first wolf’s output for money in all sorts of shit ways. I’ve found out that if you put the Ubisoft launcher in offline mode, you’ve blocked the second wolf. As for the game itself, it remains faithful to the series. There are some welcome improvements, such as the end of garbage equipment loot. In terms of storyline, I can’t say I’m feeling especially involved so far. There is a certain cruelty to the protagonist which I struggle with. On the other hand I must also say that at times the game feels unapologetically woke which I thoroughly enjoy. The side quests are also super goofy.

    Hi there.

I’m a bit hesitant about allowing or not linking to the website archives.
For the time being, and while we discuss about it among the mods, I’d like to ask you to refrain from posting any link to said archive.
If we decide to allow it, I’ll restore the comments containing said links I’ve removed.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Final Edit :

After carefully considering both sides arguments, and talking about it with LM admins and the mod team, we decided to keep the direct links removed.

LM allows meta-discussions around piracy, but not linking to possible pirated content. As we do not have the means and resources to check the whole 12Go dump to make sure no there is no copyrighted content in one of those Rom Hacks. More information here.

Rom Hacking is a gray area which is, depending on your location and/or interpretation of your local law, allowed or not. LW is under EU Jurisdiction (see that part of the TOS), and has to abide with rather restrictive law on that matter. There is unfortunately no broad “fair use” exception in that jurisdiction, only specific exceptions listed here. None of them seem to be applicable to Rom Hacks, which mean that they are to be considered potentially illegal under LW jurisdiction.

    catloaf,

From what I see in the archive link I posted, it only contains patches, not playable games, neither original nor patched. You need a copy of the game already to make any use of it.

    Pixelguin,

That’s correct. The entire archive is only about 12GB; it couldn’t possibly contain the full games.

    Dremor, (edited )
    @Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

You don’t need to have the full game to be considered as piracy. Anything allowing to break a DRM could be considered as such.

    Edit :

I understand that most of you do not agree with that, and I do too, but as a mod I have to put my feelings on the matter aside and put the community and lemmy.world interest first. If we get DMCA (or the EU equivalent), consequences could be quite significant for this community or the server itself.

You can find a more specific explanation of my stance here :

Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise.
In the EU, things are a bit different. US Fair Use is quite open ended, with a lot of room for interpretation. In the case of EU copyright laws, the list of exclusions is explicitly listed in Information Society Directive Article 5.
In my opinion this could fall into either art. 5.3(d), art. 5.3(i), or art. 5.3(k), but I’m no copyright law specialist. I do have one among my friends, but she kinda got a child last week, I’m not gonna bother her for that 😅.

First, please take into consideration that lemmy.world website and organisation is bound to EU laws (as stated in the TOS). As such, in the current case the EU copyright laws, that are as previously stated, far more restrictive than the US ones.

As you stated, the objective of ROM patches is to modify copyrighted material. One of the right protected by copyright in the EU is the right to modify a software.

By default, if no licence is given, software is considered as being under the most restrictive licence available (even if the source code is freely available), which means, in this case, an “all rights reserved” licence, which prohibit software modification.

In the EU, third party patches are considered as derivative works, and requires an explicit authorisation from the copyright holder to be published and used on copyrighted material. Some exceptions exists, as previously stated, but applying them here would be quite far fetched.

For now, and while I keep researching on the application of EU copyright laws to try to find a flaw that would allow me to authorize those links, I’ll have to keep those links removed.

The comments would be restored if the link are removed by the comment authors.

I’ll take a look tomorrow. I’m UTC+2 (I just can’t sleep right now 😅), so I’m not yet in the required state of mind to go and check all of that.

    doctortran,

If it’s a romhacking site, it wont have the actual ROMs, just the patches. It never would have survived 20 years if it had been hosting ROMs.

I meant that I was hesitant.

As you can see, English is not my main language.

    Psythik,

FWIW “cross” is a really stupid-sounding slang term. I irrationally hate the word.

    Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In,

Two Irish nuns were sitting in their car at a traffic light when a bunch of rowdy drunks pulled up alongside.

“Hey, show us your tits you bloody penguins!” shouted one of the drunks.

The Mother Superior turns to Sister Margaret and says “I don’t think they know who we are. Show them your cross!”

So Sister Margaret rolls down her window and shouts, “Sod off you little fucking wankers before I get out and rip your goddam balls off!”

Sister Margaret looks back at the Mother Superior and asks, “Was that cross enough?”.

    Same as last week.

Under Night In-Birth II [Sys:Celes] - I'm back on my bullshit again. Uzuki arc was fun, but when it comes time for bracket I gotta lock in. And by lock in, I mean still play like a clown.

Splatoon 3 - Didn't have too much time to practice this week, but had one good session. Really trying to work on more actionable callouts, coordinating with our specials and planning a push together rather than merely announcing things after they happen.

Persona 4 Golden - Still just post-Kanji dungeon. At the rate I am going I will finish this game... someday.

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story - Man, forgot how annoying it was that you have to always go for weapon breaks against bosses or else you miss their blueprint forever. Also, RHDN shutdown has me wondering, if/when the third game's translation patch ever gets finished, where do I even look to find out about it?

Slay the Spire - I can quit any time I want, I swear.

Mahjong Soul/Riichi City/IRL mahjong - Came dangerously close to losing my Master 1 rank on Soul, but got a few wins so I'm safeish now. I know I'm too reckless and I'm trying to work on that. I did play one of the best games I've had at club this week, had the discipline to fold several tempting hands and it turned out to be correct every time. Sometimes protecting second place through smart play is more satisfying than lucking into first.

Still having fun with Helldivers 2. Player Base dropped but still around 40k in the meantime (don’t look at Steam Numbers only, there are console players too). There are constant updates and a big one is coming mid August.

Nowadays? If you want to get a game in my face, it has to be via word of mouth or be blown in by the winds of Steam.

I took a look through my game library and these are the broad categories of how a game ended up there.

    • Friends (though I tend to be the recommender for my friends)
      • Path of Exile, Cobalt Core
    • I liked the demo at Steam Next Fest
      • Moonlight Pulse, Laika: Aged Through Blood, Cassette Beasts
    • Announcement through a game I already like
      • Jackbox series, Slayers X, Vertigo 2
    • YouTube channels
      • Game Maker’s Toolkit: Neon White, Toodee and Topdee, Assault Android Cactus
      • From other channels, but I don’t remember which: Gunfire Reborn, A Short Hike, Bug Fables
    • Sheer luck
      • I found Corn Kidz 64 from a tile at the bottom of a Steam store page, before it was released
      • I found Hypnospace Outlaw from Steam’s discovery queue…
      • …and following through the music credits got me to Queenjazz’s Bandcamp site, where I found an OST for a different game, Grapple Dog!

Gamescom, then I bookmark the trailer of games I’m interested at with their release date. A few months later I can just open the bookmarks and know what is releasing this month. Whenever I find out a game is delayed, I edit the bookmark with the new date. It’s very easy to keep track of new releases that way.

I do it this way, because I’ve had quite a few good games that I completely missed because of not checking the news in that week.
