RightHandOfIkaros, do games w UK petition of "Require videogame publishers to keep games they have sold in a working state" just got thrown back to the Government

This is honestly pretty funny. Even another government agency recognized how bad the response was. That was literally like someone asking how old you are, and you respond by telling them the definition of age.

PlasticExistence, do games w [QUESTION] What is the most realistic-looking game that can also run on Linux distros?

You can look for specific games on protondb.com to get a good idea of how they run.

I don’t chase high-end PC gaming anywhere near enough to name a single game that is known for realism.

simple, do games w [QUESTION] What is the most realistic-looking game that can also run on Linux distros?

Cyberpunk 2077, probably. The game maxed out will destroy your graphics card but the graphics are undoubtedly gorgeous.

Horizon Forbidden West also has really good graphics.

otacon239,

I second Horizon. There are moments where I’m convinced the graphics are pre-rendered when cranked to the max.

xfts,
@xfts@lemmy.world avatar

I second Cyberpunk, ray tracing enabled or not. That game truly captures a realistic dystopian world in the best way possible.

emeralddawn45,

I just started playing ghost of tsushima on my steam deck and it’s fucking gorgeous even on low settings, so I assume that would be pretty beautiful maxed out too.

Essence_of_Meh, do games w UK petition of "Require videogame publishers to keep games they have sold in a working state" just got thrown back to the Government

That’s positively surprising, I expected them to leave it at that until petition reaches the second milestone (if that even happens). Let’s see if anything new comes out of this.

SkyezOpen, do games w If you've done the Final Fantasy marathon did you include FF XI? Was it worth it?

I genuinely thought they killed it off. Wow.

But no, I wouldn’t include any MMO in a game marathon. XIV has a “story” but compared to a legit single player rpg, yeah no way.

Mako_Bunny,

XIV’s story is insanely good though but I guess we’re not counting DLCs here (although the first 2 expansions are free now)

SkyezOpen,

The story being told is good but the gameplay is eeeurgh. Endless boring ass fetch quests punctuated by pretty cool dungeons.

Granted that’s just the early msq. I enjoy the game and have several 90 combat classes, but it really was a slog to start.

Evotech,

The whole msq is like that in essence, not just the early part

SkyezOpen,

True, though the further you get, the more things you unlock and can do to distract you from how boring the endless fetch quests are.

I spent an entire weekend farming and crafting to furnish my apartment.

Evotech,

It’s not bad if you are an active player. The msq drips are a welcome addition when you have “run out” of content and is very manageable.

That said, I tried to catch up from 80 to 90 and I could just not justify any more hours doing the msq just to be able to raid. It was just hours and hours and days and days of clicking people reading text and going to the next location clicking more boxes

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll be honest compared to many of the main FF games like X, XIII or XVI, XIV’s story from ARR->EW, especially once you’re in the last segments of ShB and EW, easily outdoes them. It’s slow as molasses since it has to fit a whole MMO with 2y release cycles into it, but it’s also damn good.

not_that_guy05, do games w If you've done the Final Fantasy marathon did you include FF XI? Was it worth it?

Not related but an old memory.

Bought the game when it came out was around 12 y/o, and was so happy since my parents rarely got me games. Got home, told them I needed a card for online monthly payments… The game just sat there and picked up dust. Never got to play it.

MacedWindow,
@MacedWindow@lemmy.world avatar

Aha thats brutal. Thats why the MMOs should never have been numbered games! Final Fantasy: Online would have gotten the point across.

liam070,

I bought it at the time without realising you need an internet connection. Good times…

not_that_guy05,

Oh dialup days. There was the monthly AOL trials. Just had to keep waiting for them lol

capt_wolf,
@capt_wolf@lemmy.world avatar

I got my copy free when I bought my PS2 hard drive and never played it once.

I lost my best friend to that game. He got into playing it so much after high school that he basically stopped doing anything else. I’d call him to hang out and he’d ghost me to play the game instead. Eventually I gave up trying…

My friends now want me to get into FFXIV and I absolutely refuse.

eerongal, do gaming w Where do I find game demakes?
@eerongal@ttrpg.network avatar

People frequently make demakes with pico-8

github.com/pixelbath/pico8demakes

sleepybisexual,

Yea, should look into pico8

Found a nice romset yesterday, what games are good?

Been enjoying just one boss

chloyster, do gaming w Where do I find game demakes?

This is a good source: itch.io/games/tag-demake

Maxy, do gaming w Where do I find game demakes?

interested in females

Username checks out, though I’m assuming you meant “demakes”?

Anyways, the demake I’m most familiar with is the in-progress Lego island. The YouTuber behind it documented part of the process in vlogs (linked on the GitHub page), so that might be an interesting starting point.

knightly,
@knightly@pawb.social avatar

Lol, worst autocorrect ever. XD

TachyonTele,

It fits so perfectly too. Females? Oh Celeste and op is bi.

Calling women demakes is a new one.
Holy crap, my autocorrect did it too! It changed demakes into females. Wtf

Kichae,

Look at the positions of d and k on the keyboard. _ema_es.

sleepybisexual,

And transfem, not sure if this accounts bio is updated tho

sleepybisexual,

Yea lol Whoever invented autocorrect should have every device that can run an autocorrect thrown at them

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I hate to be nitpicky; but that’s a decompilation, not a demake.

‘Demake’ usually refers to a game that gets remade for a system older (or less powerful) than the one it was released for. A good current example is the in-progress Super Mario 64 demake for GBA.

‘Decompilation’ is where one reverse-engineers a game (or any software!) back to its original source code, or close enough that when you build it, it’s identical to an original copy. So, the goal of the Lego Island demake is to produce source code that can be built into a fully binary-compatible copy of Lego Island, indistinct from what’s on the original CD.

Feyter,

Thanks for being nitpicky, so I didn’t had to.

Maxy,

Oh I don’t mind the nitpicking, thanks for the explanation! I (apparently erroneously) thought “demake” and “decompile” were synonyms. Guess I’m one of today’s 10000.

In that case the (now taken down, but forked a gazillion times) portal64 project would be a correct example of a demake, right?

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Correct!

sleepybisexual,

Fucking autocorrect

Maxy,

didn’t know that was a part of bisexuality

I should probably flee before I get eaten by an army of blahåjar (apparently that’s the correct plural?)

Ibaudia, do games w WTF is wrong with Killing Floor 2?
@Ibaudia@lemmy.world avatar

I tried KF2 for a while and really couldn’t get into it. The game just lacks replayability in my opinion. Trying different perks, maps, difficulties, etc. really didn’t resonate with me because I felt like I was doing basically the same thing, just kiting around enemies in a predictable loop. There was a serious absence of memorable moments, unlike with other horde shooters like l4d and even b4b. Sunk a few dozen hours into it and it kinda feels like a waste in hindsight, never really enjoyed it and spent the whole time trying to.

Stamau123, do games w WTF is wrong with Killing Floor 2?

I used to be into KF1 because all the ads, trailers, etc were always so fun to watch. Became a lot more boring in KF2 and the game itself kinda felt that way too.

Barbarian,
@Barbarian@sh.itjust.works avatar

You can always refund it. Even if you’ve gone over the 2 hours for an auto-accept refund, if you explain the issues in the ticket Steam will always accept it in my experience.

Even got a refund for a game after 20 hours of game time due to them adding aggressive client-side anti-cheat.

jaykay,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

I mean yeah, could do. But I’ll try it first probably lol

witheyeandclaw,

It’s still fun. OP’s points are valid but it’s still fun.

twack,

It’s currently on a free weekend promotion on steam. You can play it either way.

romano, do games w WTF is wrong with Killing Floor 2?

I tried liking KF2 but it just lacks the crispness and the atmosphere of KF1. I also missed the shop lady with her opening shop in the weirdest locations in between rounds. So yeah, KF2 lacks charm IMO and I still like KF1 more even on its aging UE2.5 engine. I don’t think KF3 will find my interest, with all the multiplayer games going “live service” and all.

synapse1278,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

I am a fan ever since KF was a mode of UT2004. I played KF1 a hella lot. This game has a really atmosphere that I can’t really explain. I have less than 1h play time on KF2…

gaylord_fartmaster,

I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt like this. I kept thinking maybe I just wasn’t giving it a fair chance but I loved KF1 and was immediately put off by KF2.

I felt the same way about Red Orchestra 2 to a much lesser extent. I was super hyped about Tripwire overall at the time and thought it was awesome a mod team was getting funding to make the full-scale games they wanted, and they basically just immediately lost all momentum after that.

Rolive, do gaming w Can somebody explain why game makers don't start their own companies together?

You see the results of indie devs that are successful but you don’t see the ones that failed.
