Witcher 3 is actually a perfect example of what I mean. The original game is too damn long. Like so much so that I never even saw the critically-acclaimed DLC, because I was burnt out from the main game. Would have loved if the main game was shorter to give the DLC some more breathing room, but maybe that’s my own fault for chasing after too many question marks on the map.
this is your weekly reminder that c/gaming has Meme Mondays, and you are invited to share your favorite gaming memes on this day of the week! Let’s break up all the great discussion with a lil fun and humor!
Please let this be true. Games are too damn long. They should shorten this main story, then if they want to do more narrative, they should throw it into DLC or online co-op missions. They make more money, and we get the grace of a main story that ends when it’s supposed to.
Idk if that’s a useful example case. Streamers are under pressure from their audience to be entertaining, so they will frequently skip tutorials against their better judgment bc tutorials aren’t fun to watch. I can’t speak to your irl examples, but it’s possible that there was a similar dynamic happening there. At least, I can say that I have personally felt a similar pressure when playing games while other people are watching me.
Edit: user reviews are good example, though. I could see a dev over-tutorializing bc they are anxious about negative user reviews.
Ideally, it would be an optional thing, but oh well.
Yeah tons of games ask you at the start of the game, like “have you played this kind of game before?” Def seems clumsy for a game that otherwise seems pretty well thought out.
technically the article never goes as far as arguing that people should boycott the game, though that is obviously the implied thesis. I don’t exactly disagree with you, I just think it’s a conversation worth having.
It’s interesting to compare to the Israel-Palestine debate, too. By the same logic, one should avoid buying any games from US-based developers, because those taxes are going to fund the genocide in Gaza. But of course, when you follow the logic to that end, one starts to consider their own income taxes in that debate.
I did not know this one was so close to release! I am glad to see that it is awesome, and now I don’t want to know anything else about the game because I want to be surprised!
