Playing complex strategy games for many years, one of the things that irks me the most is that hard AI levels often just give the dumb AI cheats to simulate it being smarter. trying to live train AI against your playstyle is both expensive and unnecessary. Hard bots have never really been too much trouble. We don’t really need to use AI to outpace humans in most games. The exceptions would be an extremely long play games like chess and go.

There’s been a lot of use in AI for platformers and stuff like trackmania, but not for competition, simply for speedruns.

That would be a pretty good use. Llms are a little slow on most home hardware still. Hallucinations could also be a little scary. I wonder if that would affect your ESRB rating, That’s technically it could say anything…

It’s math. The amount of money they’re spending on supporting the VR platforms is less than the amount of money they make for the people on those platforms. They probably have to dedicate several multi-person teams to manage the clients.

Linux has some pretty good hedging going on with steam deck.

I’m not talking about VR companies I’m talking about Mojang.

The teams that Mojang keeps to work on the platforms cost more than the income from the people using those clients.

If you make a game, and you decide to support Mac, and Mac only brings in $500 a month but you have to pay somebody $3,000 a month to maintain the client, You’re losing $2,500 a month for that particular market segment.

Nothing says you have to get rid of those people or that client, But it’s a fiscally sound decision.

Well, I mean wow was already at $15 a month back in the day. When it came out in 2004, It was like paying $25 per month today. It was damn pricey back then. At this point I think they’re getting all the money out of it that the market will bear. Yeah the expansions help but I suspect they’re running leaner now than they were.

That’s not to say they didn’t expect backlash, they fully expected some, they simply didn’t do a field study to see how bad it was going to be. Actually pretty common in the industry. Thow shit against the wall, see how bad the outcome is, discount that against profit. :)

Yeah you can’t tell anybody on this site that you pulled some data from AI. Even if you followed the link and found the actual report and the numbers matched up you’ll still get down voted into oblivion.

The mass layoffs are definitely pure greed. At one point they served a purpose of ebb and flow and separating the wheat from the chaff, but things aren’t that healthy anymore.

Crunch time was great when it came with the bonuses and liberal vacation.

But now, anything that’s worth a damn gets bought up into large public companies who need to satisfy shareholders. Even the private stuff is still subject to the whims of the executives. There are still some good places to land out there but they’re slowly getting trashed over time.

I played heavily back in the day I don’t think the money was ever really the problem It was the time. When I finally settled down and had a family I had to stop. $15 a month for service and $50 every 2 years for DLC isn’t really all that much money If you consider 60 hours a week of entertainment for that price a deal. If you are that close to the edge you’re going to be on the edge anyway.

I mean it’s actually fair and it’s not the game’s fault.

Hell I bet if we dug into a deeper it turns out to be age gap as much as anything else.

When I grew up, video game consoles were hard for the sake of being hard because the games didn’t have enough storage and ram to be that long. Back then I hated dragon’s lair because it was so f****** pretty and I really wanted to play it so bad, but it was just a coin eater and I was too young to have disposable income

I moved into first person shooters around the time of Quake. I was decently skilled but not amazing, but I was making enough money that I could afford a really nice rig and a really fast connection. Slowly FPS started turning into military combat which I really didn’t care for.

Many years later I got into mmorpgs, I spent thousands of hours playing in guilds, running raids, and grinding equipment. I still hated the same things but didn’t really focus much on them because the only thing I did was MMO.

Years later I start a family, now I hate anything that’s not casual. If I can’t pick it up play it for 30-40 minutes and put it away it’s going to do nothing for me that cost me pain.

Dark age of Camelot, had a guild made up of mostly locals. Did a custom website, scraped Mythics rankings, put in interactive maps, scroll trading system. It was all a hoot, moved to Warcraft after. Solid group of good people.
