lime, do games w What are your favorite "gotta go in blind" games?

it’s especially wild in a cutesy game like tunic where it just bodies you ten minutes in. it made me feel like i had been tricked.

i thought that too, and tried studying their movements, but they attacked faster than i could even press the button.

i bounced off tunic super hard. i love the puzzle aspects, the cryptic manual pages, and figuring things out, but the combat was way too brutal, even on the easier setting. the bigger white ghost enemies at the very start killed me so many times i no longer want to go back to it.

lime, do gaming w At least it was unique

yeah they released one with the same shell but no GC parts, it didn’t have the controller and memory card ports on the top either. i wonder what they filled all that empty space with.

explore the island you got stuck on. look around for details. sit down and watch the spectacle until you can continue. there’s no rush, and no such thing as wasted time.

or to be more prosaic, you go back home automatically after a short while anyway. not only that, every island gets thrown around by the storms periodically, launching them clear out of the atmosphere every five minutes or so. it’s just a matter of observing your surroundings, and something will happen.

interesting perspective, because while i completed subnautica i got tired of pacific drive. mainly because subnautica is open and static. you can make your way around a problem area meaning you get by with less time scavenging, while pacific drive is relentless and random, and will absolutely fuck you up if you don’t have the right ingredients. it sells itself on its driving aesthetic, but you spend so little time actually in the car that it seems pointless. it’s all just digging through trash and crafting.

“strand” is swedish for “beach”.

it’s all connected.

lime, do games w In the era of remakes and remasters, what niche game would you like to see receive the treatment?

i definitely remember being excited for the possibility to play single player but telling my friends that we could play together if it succeeded. not that the online experience differs significantly from the single player…

no it wasn’t. i backed the kickstarter. it was always an online game, it just had “solo” and “private” modes. and they didn’t get “so much money”, they got like 120% of their target. they were up against the star citizen kickstarter and that got all the hype.

my main issue with ED is that they focused on building a modern Elite rather than a modern Elite 4. Building upon the ideas of Frontier: First Encounters would have made a very different game.

X is more like Freelancer meets Euro Truck Simulator, in my experience.

Elite 2: Frontier.

elite dangerous is very close but it doesn’t really capture the seamlessness you get from not having a landing mode or frame shifting. pioneer spaceship sim is a remake in the truest sense of the word, but a remaster would fix the ui issues the original had rather than just rolling with them.

it’s less about the details and more about the entirety of the experience for me.

i harp on it a lot, but Outer Wilds helps me a lot. It teaches the value of exploration, curiosity, friendship, compassion, and patience. it’s a deeply melancholic piece, which can be frustrating and obtuse at times, but just remembering it makes me happy. the soundtrack brings all the memories back every time.

that’s a shame. i’m not going to force it on you if you don’t enjoy the experience, but i will say that there are no mechanical progress gates at all in Outer Wilds, no intended order to do things in, and multiple interleaving threads to pull on. if you get stuck in one place, going to another may let you learn how to proceed. if it feels like you’re missing something, you probably are, and going somewhere else may help you find it.

it’s been my game of the year five years running, if that means anything. the dlc only cemented that position even more.

It’s the 2022 expansion for Outer Wilds, which released in 2019. Just as much a masterpiece as the first entry. if you know nothing, you owe it to yourself to play them.
