kurcatovium, do gaming w What games are you nostalgic towards but wouldn't go back and play?

I’ve quite recently made run of D2 up to middle of Act V and rhen lost interest at all. It was a bit grindy, but the main problem was convenience factor. I was at the point when my summoning Druid started to lack behind and it is pretty much impossible to respec skills to fight that sort of bad decisions… When I was a teenager I’d just scratch it and start over with better build, but ain’t nobody got time for that now!

For me it would probably be most old DOS era games like Dune 2, Ultima Underworld, Warcraft 1, Civilization 1, etc. All of them were great, but it’s really difficult to get used to those old control schemes nowadays. Pixelated graphics wouldn’t bother me, but those like 15 FPS at max is also hard to get over these days.

Other than that it would be some newer games that lacks a bit of convenience stuff. Like e.g. Diablo 1, where you can’t run yet. Or some of the first 3D accelerated shooters that can’t remap controls to WASD.

Well, I’d say Morrowind is still decently playable today, esp. with OpenMW. Sure it shows its age, but I’d ratber play that than e.g. Oblivion.

Which cannot be said about Todd Howard.

kurcatovium, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

True, but majority of non-entirely-indie devs do exactly what I said. Sadly some indie too.

I’ve played many different RPGs during my life, but Disco really is like nothing I’ve played before. Maybe, just maybe a little like Planescape Torment, but other than that? Nothing comes to mind. Which is unbelievable in this age, where most developers play it safe with basically sequels of successful games and new ones you barely can tell apart…

I got hooked, but I was like “what if I chose this option now?” all the time. So I started completely different character right after I finished. Got couple hours in, but… 1) it’s too fresh experience and I should probably give it a bit more time and 2) I wanted the new character to be this fascist, racist, egoist, alcohol and drug abuser, but damn. It’s so tough to play against some basic human principles.

Checkmate! I don’t even have 180 mbps internet lane. Deal with it Microsoft!

kurcatovium, do gaming w Recommend me your favorite linear games!

I had a good fun with Bulletstorm. Kind of a game where you can put your brain on hold and enjoy the ride.

kurcatovium, do gaming w Steam's new disclaimer reminds everyone that you don't actually own your games, GOG moves in for the killshot: Its offline installers 'cannot be taken away from you'

Not sire how it’s now, but couple years ago that “new galaxy” thing felt like it was precisely crafted to NOT run on linux. I tried multiple ways to run it, but all of them were unstable, crashing and very laggy. The best one was through Bottles but still… Heroic came and was instantly way ahead.

If GOG are such a freedom heroes why do they rely on megacorp Windows OS? That’s what I like about steam - it makes gaming on linux dumb easy. And not just on linux, their “package” is ridiculously good - mods, cummunity, reviews, friends, non stop sales, mobile app (although I hate they removed chat to standalone app), and much, much more.

I’m not shitting on GOG. I love those guys, they brought back so much memories with reviving long forgotten games, I have hundreds of purchases there. But… it just needs a lite more polish (pun intended).

kurcatovium, do gaming w Wireless mouse with silent switches recommendation

I have two problems with this.

  1. I consider Razer the most over-hyped and over-priced peripheral producer. The products I’ve seen were not bad, but did cost at least twice as much as their feel suggested. I don’t want to support this.
  2. Tilt-wheel. Every mouse I’ve held that had tilt wheel was PITA in the long run. I probably grip the mouse wrong, but I very often tilted the wheel instead pressing the button.
