chiliedogg, do gaming w What video game franchises do you not need to start from the very beginning to enjoy? What would you recommend as the entry point into your favorite series?

There’s a point in the third game that determines the fate of 2 different species that can play out very differently based upon actions you’ve made across the series. And the “best” version depends on your completing the loyalty quests of multiple characters in ME2 before a certain trigger point.

Mass Effect trilogy.

Skeet shooting is a lot of fun, but trains you to jerk the trigger.

You should try 10mm if you’re good with 40.

I am not. I’m too much of a skeet shooter to be good with a pistol.

I need to try Arma again. I love the concept, but with all the complicated controls it felt like a marriage between Battlefield and QWOP.

I mean, if there’s a pistol cartidge it’s easy to shoot with precisely at medium range it’s a 5.7x28. Recoils like a 22 with downright stupid velocity. A good shooter can do a 2-3-inch 5-shot group at 25 yards without an optic on an FN FiveSeven. With a red dot, they can get 1.5 inches pretty easily.

Some would say it’s grossly underpowered, and only really useful tactically in the armor-piercing variety. But there’s no arguing it’s a breeze to shoot.

My point is that SteamOS is similar to Android from a business perspective.

They’re making an OS for free that anyone can install, but they’re doing it to get people to buy software from Steam.

Yeah, you don’t have to use Steam as your software provider, but Android users don’t have to use the Play Store.

Guess where almost all apps are purchased on Android? Valve wants to be the Google of the mobile PC gaming world.

I actually typed Origin when I meant to type EGS, which charges 18% to Steam’s 30%.

They offer a free operating system anyone can use that’s name after their company and designed to play games sold through the included store for a 30% cut of sales.

What saints!

If Google did something similar, I bet everyone would say they’re a great company and not at all evil…

Gabe is a billionaire monopolist, not your friend.

I really don’t get the love for Valve. They charge double the fees of some other digital platforms, and people flip the fuck out when a developer is like "we’re releasing on origin because paying Valve would cost more money than the entire net profit of the game.

chiliedogg, do games w Thief has a new spiritual sequel, built by the Deus Ex and System Shock devs

I think what he means is multi-player games are typically cheaper than single-player because the devs make 6 maps or whatever and let the players loose.

A full campaign requires a lot more work to keep it interesting for more than a few minutes.

EGS charges 12%. That’s what makes the market leader the bad guy.

At least Xbox provides a platform and Walmart and Gamestop provide physical products at physical locations.

Steam doesn’t have those expenses. And they also have exclusive titles, just like EGS.

You think Valve taking an extortionate amount of the budget doesn’t affect you as a consumer?

Games have budgets. With Valve taking as much money as the actual development budget for many games, the end product is significantly impacted. Games are regularly released late while missing features and so buggy as to not work. The extra 18% of the gross taken up by Valve versus EGS could be used to put more resources into the actual game.

If they charged less.fpr the platform, they’d still be raking in more than they can spend while also not taking an extra 20% out of game development budgets versus the competition.

Bad companies can make good products.

Steam also has anti-consumer policies. They just hide it better.

You think the reasen that games that are on both platforms don’t cost 20% more on Steam is because the devs love Gabe?

He’s a fucking billionaire who makes infinite money running an app store that takes a bigger cut of the game’s income than the combined pay of all the developers working on the game combined.

He’s not your friend. He’s a leech running a glorified app launcher.
