Thats okay FromSoft, you go when you feel like it. I will instantly pick ER back up.

Here’s a video of Doom running on gut bacteria, proving you really can play the game on anything (www.engadget.com)

An MIT biotech researcher has been able to run the iconic computer game Doom using actual gut bacteria. Lauren Ramlan didn’t get the game going on a digital simulation of bacteria, but turned actual bacteria into pixels to display the 30-year-old FPS, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun....

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

The title is misleading and the article even points it out. She is displaying Doom (which is still cool and kinda fucking crazy) on bacteria. It is not being processed by the bacteria.

Announcellation: Entertainment Media Is Losing Its Mind (The Jimquisition) (youtu.be) angielski

A little opinion piece about the enshitification of the gaming and entertainment industry as Love Live! School Idol Festival 2 MIRACLE LIVE!, a mobile, GaaS, launches globally in February, but service will only remain online for three months before it shuts down....

The link is 404ing for me. Either way thats scummy. The only project that was cool like this was the game where you could only die once and then you were out forever.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I meant the patreon link. It has Love concatenated on the end.

Corporate control rises, and piracy to meet it.

Good luck enforcing non-ownership on people who post classified government docs to prove their digital war vehicles are accurate or not. It may overlap, but this is not the same audience.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

A lot of us just want to have some fun after work and it is not fun when you feel served up like a buttered hot meal. I don’t want to feel like my games are consuming me.

Finite people, wasting finite time, on abstract concepts. “Don’t you think of us when you read the letter ‘R’?” No, I think of a Rhinoceros.

Video game actors speak out after union announces AI voice deal (www.videogameschronicle.com) angielski

According to SAG AFTRA, the deal will “enable Replica to engage SAG-AFTRA members under a fair, ethical agreement to safely create and license a digital replica of their voice. Licensed voices can be used in video game development and other interactive media projects from pre-production to final release.”...

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I think it would be better for all involved if we figure this out now. Existing Voice Actors should not have their performances used without their explicit consent. Any performances used by current or past voice actors must have explicit consent and compensation. “New” voices generates by AI must be sufficiently differing from existing performances and any existing performances used in the generation must have consent by the original voice actor.

Guarantee none of them have experienced being on your 10th take in the booth, with the previous line fed to you by the Audio Engineer through your cans, and the next line is whatever comes next alphabetically. Its just as valid as any other form of acting. People on a high horse because of their job is the most asinine shit. Its all work.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Thats a solid and necessary addition. This comment section alone has already done more than any regulators. Its like they’re afraid to at least lay down protective ground rules so VAs can continue to eat. Too much profit salivation.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

It makes sense, especially with US culture. Its the monster energy of video games.

RIP the studio that brought us Time Splitters 🫡

After Crytek had thoroughly fucked them, yes. Much of the key people were the same and thats really what I referred to. The Old Guarde did not survive a second fall.

More importantly, people who directly influenced my childhood via Goldeneye and the original TS were in there when it went down again. To them, I give the mightiest of salutes.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve seen this article 15 fucken times today. They’re children who have never known a world without microtransactions. They also get these games for free, its not like they’re choosing subs over a game. They are choosing a sub for a game. Much like I did with WoW when it was the thing back in the day.

And where was this shit with flash games? “Kids would rather load a webpage than buy games”

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I wouldn’t really use this as an indicator. Read your terms of agreements in most games. You do not own any of those virtual items. My D Scimmy is property of Jagex, not Sanctus. Subscription games have existed for as long as there has been dial-up. Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2 made you buy a “Hunter’s License” to play online. Neopets has a term in the TAS that states you do not own anything belonging to your Neopets account.

The minute it gets alarming is when the normal goes from “buying your first home/car” to renting, which we already have one foot through the door on that front. Physical commodities are a much better indicator of our dystopian qualities. Once people stop expecting to own a home, and are just excited to return to their corner of the habblock then we have a problem.

Games as a Service on the other hand, are mostly symptoms of our unregulated technology markets. Its much more profitable to release the license to play your game for free and pack it with predatory microtransactions than it is to release an actual piece work for a game. So we will continue to see more of the shitpacked experiences as they continue to be profitable.

If you want to own digital things, consider finding games on Itch.io whwre you can buy them directly from the creator.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe we should have two ratings? Saying its a flop is vague, yes it mostly means it didn’t sell, but why? In this case, I didn’t even hear about it there are so many millions of games. But is it a good game regardless? Is it fun to play? These types of headlines don’t really answer that and just push negative press.

Sanctus, (edited )
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Well with Warhammer games, its 90% RTS, 8% one-offs like Boltgun, and the other 2% is the Tide games. They don’t like to take risks or move to far away from the table top and mostly leave that up to brave studios who get a license. The market is prime for a WH40K soulslike right now.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

An open-world game where you are the target of the Imperium’s xenophobia and hatred would probably be pretty hot right now considering world events. But GW would be way too scared to make the Imperium the actual antagonists of a piece of media because space marines are their cash cow.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

There might be underlying problems with our collective psyche. We seem to gravitate towards strong figures clouded in religious myths.

Also, I’m a Wagh kinda guy myself. Nuthen beetz a gud ol’ krumpin’.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

That might be where most people have a problem. This may be completely anecdotal, but it seems a majority of people want things to be black and white. They want their villians easily identifiable, they want their heroes as pure as the first oxygen molecule. That may be why a lot of fans seem to choose the Space Marines as the “good guys” in a galaxy where there are none. I’ll never understand it cause its boring, put that yin in my yang and vice versa. I want stained heroes and misguided antagonists. I want a pain in my heart as it tries to decide who to root for.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

They couldn’t accept that 3 games in, some people would be locked out due to their choices in 1 or 2. Who cares? We have our lives to play them. Lock 'em out. Thats why 1 & 2 were cool, your choices came with you.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Thats a weird way of saying you don’t want to work wirh Kojima. Its fine but, a lot of this made up stuff can made up vibe together. Bayonetta was dope in Smash Bros.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

All you See Sweets can keep trying to quantify what it is gamers like. The truth is its ephemeral until it is materialized and on our screens. You never know how fun your thing is until milliona of people can access it. So stop trying to codify it, or find a formula. There is none. Make fun shit, take all the risk. Make new shit that no one has ever made before. But for the love of fps fucking please don’t pretend you’ve drilled down on what gamers like. Thats a promise to fail.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Its insanity, Unity is a good product. There is a place for it in reality. In any sane world this product would have continued to operate how it was and it would have benefited people. But since profits are attached everything will have to be ruined eventually. Unreal is next to bat.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Allowing leaders to use profits however they wish has been a disaster. I don’t know if it was codified into law, but when companies had to invest in R&D, and they had to invest in employees before drinking their own koolaid the world was a better place. Employees were taken care of, average people could thrive. Now its an open feeding trough everyone else is exempt from. The modern world only thrives with checks and balances, its proven that without them the powerful cannot be trusted.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I just can’t help but think how the Unity Engine is a phenomenal product. Maybe our systems don’t work as well as we think they do if this company is foaming at the mouth because the metric says its bad. I used Unity for five years, its great, it didn’t need to change, but green line needed to go up.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Games as a Service are exhausting. We’ve been keeping up with this shit for a decade. Its tiring. I don’t play games with seasons anymore.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Bungie really had a thing for making us touch as many balls as possible.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

To put it simply, season passes.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

In ten years, the only place you’ll be able to truly own what you buy and play how you want is on Linux from Itch.io. These fools are salting the earth they grow their crops in.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Not much of a shoehorn when we’re speaking of the spawn of the eldritch god Microsoft. The article is even about unthinking destruction.

Sanctus, (edited )
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah this was a messy one. But I used their default settings and it was jumping frames everywhere. Can’t really blame the consumers. Also, intro cutscene has been about 10-20 frames. I know a 2080 TI isn’t new but its not supremely ancient either.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

My point being, the only thing I did was cap fps to 60. Their default settings did everything else. Also, the intro video plays before you can change any settings. How is it the consumer’s fault if even that is running terrible? Lol

Sanctus, (edited )
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I will say yesterday’s patch did wonders. Disable cross play if you haven’t. That seemed to be a huge problem. As soon as i enabled it to play with my cousin my fps dropped back down.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Check my comment down below. I updated my drivers beforehand.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

The mating of the dinosaurs. This is the same shit that happened to record labels the minute people were able to record quality sounds in their own homes. What happens when all the gaming industry is rolled under some parent organization?

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

They could add they Aether. I’m not going to lie though, the beauty of minecraft is not the content. Its the emergent systems from redstone and the like. Unless I am mistaken and Notch intended for people to make functioning RAM and computers inside minecraft.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I mean nobody wanted this game in the first place, couple that with this sewage outlet and there ya go. They really had a follow-up game planned for this? Like it was gonna be a hit?

Sanctus, (edited )
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

And thats a movie based on a legendary book. Hell yeah it made that much. Now turn around and say, “hey, bud. You know the split-personality leper following the protagonist? Ever wanted to be him?” Fuck, no. And it was never advertised as anything more than that. You have to relate a little to who you are controlling in a game, otherwise it doesn’t sell. Who relates to smeagol? People who wish they sold knives that don’t whisper to you?

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Weren’t given the funds? This game is bad for many reasons and none of them are because they were only given 15 million euros to make it.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Now go after Blizzard

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Ember is the reason I have my feitshes.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Its really not hard. They have the lion’s share of IPs but not a single person there can take a risk on a new mechanic or feature. Their problem is they want high ROI in an industry that is largely based on ephemeral measurements. You can’t predict the next hit, so you have to climb out on limbs and take risks to stand out.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

You say that, but Space Station 13 never became mainstream. Mischief Maker was left to rot and never remade. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles fucking removed the features we loved in the remake. Monster Rancher isn’t made anymore. Theres a host of IPs with great gameplay that are now lost to history. If it was so predictable companies would do it, because it makes money and companies solely exist to make money. But thats not the case. They churn out the same SaaS digital storefronts endlessly chasing the easy money. Nobody would have guessed Rainworld would have made the money it did, yet it triumphed. There is no formula for capturing the attention of apes with star-brains long enough to garner fame.
