PlayStation Portal coming on November 15th

Sony have opened pre-orders for PlayStation Portal. The remote play only device launches on November 15th for £199.99.

It certainly doesn’t seem like it’s worth £199.99 as it’s a £60 Dualsense with a cheap ass tablet stuck in the middle. £125-£150 would have been a much better price especially considering it must be connected to a PS5 and can only play games installed on the system and is not compatible with streaming games from the cloud. There would be a lot more takers if they dropped the price £50.

If you still want to order a PlayStation Portal you can do so here.

paultimate14,

cheap ass tablet

You can’t find a cheap ass tablet with a 1080p 8" screen, which I’m sure is going to be pretty good quality.

We still have to see what the software situation. If it comes with Android, or you can put android on it, it becomes a cheaper and more premium GCloud.

They have 8inch 1080p tablets on Amazon for £60. I hope it’s not one of these really cheap things but I wouldn’t be surprised.

If I can’t use the portal to play games while watching movies on my PlayStation, this shit is pointless for me.

Weirdfish,

Read that as “Portal coming to playstation” and thought Valve had a suprise. oh well.

CanadianCorhen,

Really cool looking device, but does it have any capability to play games locally, or is it only streaming?

Would be nice to be able to play PSP games on it

You can play PSP games on it. As long as they’re installed on the PS5.

paultimate14,

There have been leaks alleging that it runs (or can run) Android, although those have not been confirmed.

I don’t see that the hardware has been confirmed, but… Do they even still make new processors that wouldn’t be able to handle PPSSPP? Maybe not God of War, and maybe not upscaled fully. This isn’t like your typical cheap Chinese handheld using 6 year old processors that were designed to be budget at the time: this is going to be a modern chip, albeit not a super powerful one.

Basically if it runs Android id expect it to be similar to the GCloud.

Blizzard,

What is the reception of this gadget in general? And in your opinion? I am actually surprised and disappointed. Cloud-streaming-only device sounded pretty meh, but this… this is basically a controller with a screen…

It’s a controller with a screen with a shit load of added latency.

If it could also stream games from the cloud with a Ps Plus Premium account for times when the kids wanted to play a game on the PlayStation they could stream it while I use the console. But that’s not an option.

I’ll still end up buying one for my daughter as she will only play games on a handheld device and loves Goat Simulator 3.

Hahah that’s wholesome. And interesting how trends change. Nothing beats a huge tv screen for me.

Me too however she’s Autistic and I suspect she needs glasses, that’s perhaps why she doesn’t like playing on a TV. But giving a mostly non-vocal girl that only sits still when she’s playing a game an eye test would be impossible.

But she loves Goat Sim 3. She absolutely loves launching the nuke and blowing it up. But her main focus right now is Mario 3D World.

AProfessional,

The whole point of it being local network only is because that is the only situation where latency is acceptable.

It works over the internet too.

AProfessional,

Ah you are right, their marketing is heavily focused on home usage though. Probably because internet streaming sucks.

Local remote play isn’t much better.

AProfessional, (edited )

It is dramatically better. A LANs latency can be 2ms, nearby WAN latency maybe 16ms, next city over latency 32ms. These are multiple frames of difference.
