Eggyhead, w Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered – Official Announcement Trailer
@Eggyhead@kbin.social avatar

Okay, so every time I decide I'm going to play a retro game through emulation, a remaster is announced, giving me access and an opportunity to enjoy a better version of the game instead. It happened with Metroid Prime, Link's Awakening, Baten Kaitos, Trails from Zero/to Azure, FF pixel remasters, KOTOR, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, and now this I guess... So for the sake of everyone else, what retro games are worth adding to my list?

GeekFTW,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

Look I'm just saying if you have the ability to conjure into our reality remasters and remakes of old games, I'm going to suck your fucking dick if we can get an Illusion of Gaia (snes) remaster sometime soon.

Or ya know whatever the bits may be.

If a trailer doesn't have gameplay you can throw it straight in the garbage. Thanks.

I assume "slapformer" is a portmanteau of "slap stick" and "platformer". I'm intrigued, and I can't wait to check out Barnsworth.

FfaerieOxide, w Epic is now offering 100% of the revenue to exclusive games for the first 6 months, up from 88%
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

They gonna pull this sort of anti-competitive shit with BandCamp?

Psychonaut1969,
@Psychonaut1969@kbin.social avatar

I haven't seen anything yet.. they already got some exclusives not on Spotify, but I believe the artists are deciding what platforms they release on. As an end user, all I have noticed so far are improvements to thier android app (Playlists finally, and bringing back the shuffle all feature).

xNIBx, w Epic is now offering 100% of the revenue to exclusive games for the first 6 months, up from 88%

Exclusives are a cancer. At least if you made them, i could somewhat understand. But paying third party developers to not sell their game on certain platforms is stupid.

LineNoise, w Epic is now offering 100% of the revenue to exclusive games for the first 6 months, up from 88%

My experience of Epic exclusives is that most become things that are never on my radar again, even after the exclusive period.

I take it from this increase in rates that I’m far from alone in that regard.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

All signs point to that program being a failure for them, which is why the exclusivity offers and announcements started drying up, but I guess this is them trying a revised strategy.

TwilightVulpine, w Epic is now offering 100% of the revenue to exclusive games for the first 6 months, up from 88%

Good for the devs who need the money but as a customer Steam just provides more, and if not Steam, GOG is DRM-free and ItchIO enables smallers indies to get their games out there. Epic isn't even on my list of places to buy. The only thing I bought in Epic, funny enough, was Fortnite Save the World, and I didn't get much out of that.

ExcessivelySalty, w Epic is now offering 100% of the revenue to exclusive games for the first 6 months, up from 88%
@ExcessivelySalty@kbin.social avatar

@ampersandrew Just use Heroic Launcher, you get to enjoy whatever Epic games you have, without having to use their launcher. Plus it works with GOG games as well.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I'll use that for things I already have in my library, either from my Windows days or from giveaways, but I'm not going to spend money in their stores when they don't officially support me as a customer. Unofficial launchers like this could be broken by those storefronts at any time, and they were never guaranteed to work for me. GOG fares better than Epic in this regard, since they do sell Linux games, but I want official cloud saves and automatic updates as well.

Phanatik, (edited ) w EA's BioWare will lay off 50 and cut ties with unionized Keywords playtesting group

Wait, when was Baldur's Gate a BioWare series? That's the first time I'm hearing about this.

Edit: Well how about that...

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

The previous two games, 20 years ago. It's what gave them the reputation of being a studio that made great RPGs. Then they went on to make Neverwinter Nights (another D&D game), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars with rules very close to D&D), Jade Empire, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age.

Lunyan,
@Lunyan@kbin.social avatar

BioWare actually made Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 lol

geosoco,

1 & 2 were both bioware developed games - including their original expansions.

Poggervania,
@Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

BioWare made BG 1 & 2 back in the day, and they started Dragon Age as a spiritual successor to their DnD games as I would imagine (and assume) that EA didn’t want to deal with WoTC with getting the license to a DnD game.

So it’s kind of ironic that arguably one of the best games to come out this year is a Baldur’s Gate game as the new Dragon Age game sounds like it might be languishing in development.

HolyDuckTurtle, w EA's BioWare will lay off 50 and cut ties with unionized Keywords playtesting group
@HolyDuckTurtle@kbin.social avatar

Damn, even if it's coincidental like the article suggests; those two things happening at once is NOT a good look for Bioware. Especially with BG3 being such a huge success.

However, some slim silver lining for those being laid off is that EA/Bioware appear to be handling the situation more gracefully than others. From the article:

McKay said that EA chose to act now to provide impacted colleagues with as many internal opportunities as possible. These changes coincide with a significant number of roles that are currently open across EA’s other studios. Impacted employees will be provided with professional resources and assistance as they apply for these positions. Those departing will receive credit in the game.

I highlight the last part because removing people from credits is a shit thing to do and I'm glad to see them overtly state this will not be the case. Hopefully this is not just PR BS and the laid off employees get new roles quickly.

sirspate,
@sirspate@kbin.social avatar

True, as long as the game isn't cancelled. Though I suppose that'd be the end of the studio if it were cancelled.

Glaive0,

Not gonna lie. I read that as “in-game credits” and was curious why you were lauding EA for pulling something worse than company scrip.

The fact that this is notable tells a lot about the industry, and where major publishers can add low-stakes, low-cost value to their dev positions by just beating out others in the industry getting notoriety for being worse. It’s still good that they’re doing it, but it costs them 30 minutes of someone’s time to do something most publishers should be doing as a standard practice.
