GoodEye8, w EA rebrands Frostbite as it says teams free to choose other game engines

I’ll believe it when I see it. I’m pretty sure during the Anthem fiasco it leaked that EA doesn’t prevent studios from using other engines, but strongly incentivizes teams to use Frostbite. For instance by taking the licensing fee out of the development budget meaning you either cut down the scope or use an engine that might not be suited for the project.

It’s very EA to say “you can use whatever you want” and then leave out the “but we’re not going to help you if you don’t do as we want”.

ampersandrew, w Leaked slide reveals Sony's PC games sales figures
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

It’s a great platformer, don’t get me wrong. But you’re telling me that a PC version of Sackboy made more sense than Bloodborne? Come oooooon.

You can't believe that they're choosing the most marketable games if they're omitting Bloodborne. The rumor I heard long ago at this point is that From and Sony have a contract dispute, so one won't do more work until they're paid, and the other refuses to pay. In situations like this, it's not uncommon for one company, like Sony, to own the rights to the name and story while the other, From Soft, might own the code base. The rumor was that the Demon's Souls remake by Bluepoint got around the same problem by not using any of From's code and that they might do the same thing with Bloodborne, but no signs of that yet. It wouldn't be out of line with Sony's remaster/remake strategy though.

MJBrune,

Demon’s Souls remake by Bluepoint

Demon’s Souls is owned by PlayStation. They made Dark Souls as a series because Demon’s Souls wasn’t something they owned. I believe the dispute goes back that far.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

That didn't seem like a dispute so much as it was recognizing an opportunity to make more money by going multiplatform. Then after Dark Souls became a hit, Sony seemingly contracted them to do something just like it again, and then it appeared that something went wrong on that deal. This is just based off of how it looks from the outside world, combined with the above rumors. I didn't hear anything about soured relationships from the deal with Demon's Souls.

NotTheOnlyGamer, w Dev Behind Highly Regarded PC Game Explains Why He Raised The Price: "Go Pirate It, I Don't Care"
@NotTheOnlyGamer@kbin.social avatar

Well, if he doesn't care, then I just might bother the time and effort to pirate it. But then again, a dismissive creator who's working with Markiplier isn't someone I'm really keen on supporting in the first place. I wish him luck, and that he is approximately as successful as I am in financial terms.

A $2 increase!? OUTRAAAAAAGE

thingsiplay, w Dev Behind Highly Regarded PC Game Explains Why He Raised The Price: "Go Pirate It, I Don't Care"
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

While this is not a nice, I don't understand why this is a big deal? And why anyone would pirate the game as a result of this 2 Dollars increase (which in percentage as ~33% increase sounds worse than it is). Others are doing this too, adjust the price after long period of supporting it. And for such a low price and as an indie developer, I think it's only fair. Also for anyone thinking of pirating the game out of principle, rethink it again. Game gets deals over time and at some point it was available for ~4 Euros (which should be more like 3.79 Dollars or whatever it might be).

The game in question is https://store.steampowered.com/app/1846170/Iron_Lung/ BTW. It has Very Positive reviews on Steam and is a horror themed short game. And the dev doesn't even come up with fake excuses or anything like that, it's straight honest about making more money. Which is fair to me! And before anyone accuses me, I am not affiliated with the dev or game, never purchased or received anything; it's the first time I hear about the game. Just mentioning it, because of my positive words defending the price increase. This is a rare situation where I am fine with it.

This is exactly how things should be done. If anything, him doing it this way succeeds at making me overrated interested in the game, which isn’t one I’d usually go for. Just because he’s doing it the right way.

The game is Iron Lung, and it went from $6 to $8.

thingsiplay, (edited ) w Steam has made 6 Games Free - Get them while you can
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

It's a little bit confusing title, because it's not Steam that has made the games for Free. This is not a comparable situation to what Epic Games does. Steam has nothing to do with the offering, other than hosting the game on the platform. All games are made Free by their own publishers.

Also it includes games that are always Free in price, such as Age of Advent. It serves as a sort of demonstration of the full game. And it never had a price attached to it, if I see it correctly. This article is either AI generated or the author don't know what he is writing (sorry if you read this, but its my opinion). Please fact check stuff before posting.

insomniac_lemon, w Steam has made 6 Games Free - Get them while you can

Hmm.
One of those games says right in its description that it's a free fan game, another says it's a student project for educational purposes.
Two of these are prologues, full games in wishlist phase. A third is similar, but with an upcoming sequel.
One of them is free-to-play (rather than free-to-keep)

WanderingPoltergeist, w Baldur's Gate 3 'Isn't Going to be on Game Pass', Insists Larian Boss - IGN
@WanderingPoltergeist@kbin.social avatar

Larian Studios made a beautiful game without microtransactions, battle passes, and other BS! I think not being on GamePass is quite alright as they deserve the full asking price for this wonderful game! I am going to buy Baldur's Gate 3 for my Xbox because I love the game so much (I also want to create a Charismatic Terror character...This gives me the excuse to do just that).

The live service space is so crowded now that it would be difficult for even Naughty Dog to break into it successfully. Not to mention the fatigue around live service games lately. They made the right call by not trend chasing.
