could also just be as simple as getting people’s feet in the door to their marketplace. if you already have an account maybe you’ll be fractionally more likely to buy other stuff in the store. multiply that by a few million or whatever… it’s not nothing.

What are some eras of gaming that you've stopped feeling nostalgic for? (kbin.social) angielski

As I've gotten older as a player, I have found myself dropping some eras of gaming that I used to be nostalgic for. One of them is the 8-bit era, the NES days. I have played some of the best that system had to offer and I will never say that system didn't have any good games....

@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

This is when the whole “if all you find are assholes, you must be one yourself” rhetoric does not apply when it comes to multiplayer games.

it’s the internet in general.

acosmichippo,

they got the IP, that’s all they wanted.

not “features” per se, but consoles have a better performance-to-price ratio compared to handhelds. In the bill of materials for a handheld you’re paying for a screen and battery that are unnecessary expenses if you just need a console. in a console, that money will go towards higher powered hardware to run games, and maybe some other ancillary things. Also in a console you can have a better cooling system since you’re not constrained to a mobile form factor. Also in a console you can use higher power since performance is not being balanced with batter life.

@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

if those nintendos had to build in a screen or battery they’d have even worse performance for the price.

yes, PC has some commonalities with consoles, but there are other aspects that make a PC a PC rather than a console.

This is not an arbitrary discussion, it’s a semantic discussion. these terms have non-arbitrary meanings.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

i would say the wiiu is a special case console. they tried adding a screen to a typical console design and it didn’t really work. that’s why they pivoted to the switch which is much more like a portable than a console.

the vast, vast majority of consoles don’t have screens built into their controllers.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

The person I was responding to was citing costs accrued for screen and battery as a reasoning for why steam deck is not a console

No, i was answering your question “what features is steam deck missing compared to consoles”.

I liked it as much as the others ASIDE from the tank missions. they leaned on the tank WAY too much. There are two or three tank battles where you will be pulling your hair out for sure. Definitely focus on upgrading the tank as much as you can because you will need all the help you can get.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

they’re right though. it has nothing to do with “defending” anyone, that’s just what AAA means.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

it’s all informal marketing jargon in every industry bro. this is not a hill to die on.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

not necessarily, they can be cosmetic only.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

so what if it isn’t as good as w3? it doesn’t ruin w3.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

what in the ever living fuck is a skin gambling site, and why do they have beef.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

are you saying DLC or expansions are never a good idea?

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

that’s why the manufacturer needs to lead the way with a killer app.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

exactly. maybe you guys just made a shitty game and can’t accept that.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

but that was like 6 whole months ago. the market is totally different now. /s

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

those gamers wouldn’t be the ones who want powerful women in the first place. The article is imagining gamers who want powerful women AND are afraid of them.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

kinda like chatGPT is trained on a bunch of PR speak.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

really don’t see the point of having a metro system in this game. seems like it would just be even less convenient than driving or fast traveling.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

100%. The best part of Bethesda open world games is exploring the open space between towns, quests, objectives, etc. Fast travel is an option, but rarely necessary. If you rely on it you will miss lots of cool stuff.

Not so in Starfield, the space between objectives is literally empty space.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

oh good, this reminds me I haven’t bothered to leave a negative review yet. let me correct that.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

yes. the point is it doesn’t work well in a video game.

Here's what a random person on the internet thought of The Outer Worlds (lemmy.world) angielski

I played the Steam version of the base game, with no DLC. I did not play the Spacer’s Choice “remaster” as it has a reputation for being broken and poorly put together. I played the game to completion on normal difficulty, completing most of the side quests, spending time with all my companions, and trying to get the most...

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure starfield can be fixed. the concept is fundamentally flawed imo.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

exactly. I gave MMOs a try, I gave looter shooters a try, and eventually I figured out GAAS is just not for me. single player offline only games please and thank you.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

consoles are purposefully made to run only the software specifically made for them.

xbox and PS are basically mini PCs that can run the same stuff with relatively minimal tweaking. exclusive games of both platforms are pure anti-consumer bullshit.

acosmichippo, (edited )
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

nope, both are anti consumer. If you want to make unique games, great. No need to restrict them only to your platform.

all it does is make people buy redundant hardware which obviously costs more money but also creates more e-waste.

also without exclusive games, consoles would have to compete on the actual hardware, price, etc rather than which games you want to play.

acosmichippo, (edited )
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

frankly I don’t understand your point. Recently both companies have been porting games to PC, but NOT the other console. If Sony can port Spiderman, God of War, etc to PC there’s absolutely no reason they can’t port them to xbox as well, except to force consumers to buy a playstation. Same with MSFT and Elder Scrolls. That’s why it’s anti-consumer.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

That’s how anti-consumerism works. Corporations abuse their power to force consumers into buying more shit for no reason, and feel good while doing it.

acosmichippo, (edited )
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

Your analogy is a poor one.

  1. “you” as an independent developer don’t have a vested interest in selling apple hardware. Microsoft and Sony do have an interest in selling xboxes and playstations.
  2. “you” as an independent developer don’t have the resources to fairly easily port an app to another platform, like Microsoft/Sony do. Like other AAA developers have been doing with non-exclusive games for decades.
  3. Market saturation for apps is not really comparable to AAA console games.
  4. I don’t think piracy is a big concern in console games, but maybe I’m wrong. I don’t keep up with it.

To me, the only reason Sony is doing it with their back catalog is to try to generate new users for their upcoming sequels. The game is at the end of its earning lifespan if they don’t port it, so why not use it to market the upcoming titles?

So you’re saying releasing games on other platforms is beneficial for game sales?

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

I think mainly for collecting resources.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

Madden is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

more importantly they sell way more units now. It takes virtually no more effort or cost for gaming companies to sell 20 million units vs 1 million.
