Stillhart,

Couldn’t agree more. I don’t even need to watch the trailer, this is an instant buy for me when it comes out.

Stillhart,

Does the world really need another building/survival “game”? These are getting as stale as Ubisoft open world games.

Stillhart,

(according to Xbox achievements I’m one of only 6% to bother reaching level 50)

When everyone gets to try it for free via Gamepass, you’re going to get very different statistics than when everyone has to shell out the money for the game and fight through the shit gameplay thanks to sunk cost fallacy.

Stillhart,

Personally, I find that researching games on the internet can be really fun. I get analysis paralysis pretty badly (I’m the guy who is always worried he will be out of consumables when he needs them so he never uses them in the first place!) so researching a little beforehand helps me enjoy myself more. I don’t need to min/max the fun out of a game, but knowing I’m on the right track is really good for my enjoyment levels.

And this is very much a me thing, and that’s okay. We play games to have fun so play the way that’s the most fun for you. If you don’t like doing research before you play, but the game seems to require it, then play something else. It’s okay to not like a game. (I wasn’t super into BG3… shhh! Don’t tell the internet or they will burn me alive! Good game, but not for me.)

Personally, I really like rogue-lites these days. They’re games where you are meant to replay them and every run will be randomized in some way so that each one ends up being unique. (Hades, FTL, Nova Drift, those sorts of games.) The randomness makes it so that there’s no WRONG way to play, just better or worse choices for a given run, which takes that “stress” of making a wring choice away for me.

You gotta find what floats your boat and don’t worry about the other games.

Stillhart,

There are lots of games out there, and just like any kind of entertainment, some will hold your hand and some won’t. Everyone has different tastes, different things they want to do with their time, different amounts of time and money, and there are games that cater to all of them.

Unfortunately, the only way to tell which is which without playing it first is by doing a little research.

So it seems like you’re a little stuck, you either play a game blind and hope it’s right for you, or you look into it beforehand to figure it out before spending your money. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect but hey, you do you. Good luck!

Stillhart,

Well, there is a pretty large community of gamers who play games on Youtube and Twitch professionally. You could always watch someone else play it briefly to get an idea of what to expect. Once you eventually find some games you really like the style of, you will be in good shape. You can then ask for more targetted recommendations here on Lemmy, or look up reviews for games in a similar genre, or find streamers who play games you like and look through their old videos for similar games (they tend to stick to a style usually), etc.

First step, I think, is figuring out not what you don’t like, but what you DO like.

Stillhart,

Every time I see anything about this game my brain goes, “Ooh, a new SEGA Genesis!!!” and then I realize it’s that shitty F2P MMO and I get sad. :(

Stillhart,

I like the idea of this game (and series) a lot. I really have NO interest in a 2D side-scroller, though. I hope the game succeeds and they can make another RoR that’s more in a style I’d enjoy.

Stillhart,

I am not sure what this comment is trying to accomplish. But grats on all those upvotes I guess.

Stillhart,

Thanks. I am fully aware that RoR2 is a thing. I was more hoping for a NEW game in the series that’s actually new but we all know Gearbox has issues with that.

Stillhart,

I am in shock at the number of people upvoting positive comments about this scam project. Until they refund all the people they defrauded to get the project off the ground, they will continue to be dragged down by their own fucking karma.

Suckers want to spend money on it now, knowing everything we know now? That’s on you. But plenty of us didn’t know we were being conned at the time.

Stillhart,

When did the game come out? I just went to check it out on my Xbox and it’s no longer showing as “coming soon” on Gamepass, but it’s also not on “Recently Added to Gamepass”. In store there’s no release date. Did something happen to the Xbox release?

Stillhart,

Wow. That’s a pretty bold move considering they’ve been advertising it on “Coming Soon” for like 4 months at this point (“Soon™”). Shame…

Thx for the info!

Space sim Squadron 42 is "feature-complete" and gunning for Starfield's lunch with massive new video (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

Squadron 42 is the single player campaign of Star Citizen, that is supposed to launch as a separate game. It's basically a small portion of Star Citizen, but with a story and ending. I'm still not confident; waited too long for that.

Stillhart,

I admit, they fooled me into contributing to the Kickstarter. But at this point, anyone who has anything positive to say about this project is a paid shill (paid for by us!) or heavily in denial thanks to sunk cost fallacy. They say you can “play” it now, but it’s still not a game, it’s a tech demo and sandbox.

I’m perfectly happy to write this off as a failed Kickstarter, it happens from time to time. But when they keep trying to con money out of new suckers, it really pisses me off. Enough is enough. Assholes.

Stillhart,

What’s the over/under on how much this guy paid into the “game” so far? I’m gonna say with this level of defensiveness, at least a few hundred dollars. Considering he plays with his wife, probably double that.

Stillhart,

According to the game’s original pitch on Kickstarter, it would be a space sim with a co-op multiplayer game, an offline single-player experience, and a persistent universe. It’s since become a massively multiplayer online game and a separate single-player game with first-person shooter elements called Squadron 42, which RSI originally pitched as “A Wing Commander style single player mode, playable OFFLINE if you want.”

This is what bugs me the most about this whole fiasco. I paid into the original Kickstarter because Wing Commander through Freelancer were my favorite games and I wanted more of that.

The current project, even if we were to VERY charitably call it a game and call it playable, is nothing like Wing Commander or Freelancer.

If they were still making an actual Wing Commander type game after all this time, my copium might still be in full effect. But this current… THING… isn’t even the game they promised in the first place. It’s so disappointing.

Stillhart,

I played Elite for a little bit, maybe a month or two, before it got to the point where it just felt like a job.

I love the X series. I have hundreds of hours in X4. It’s definitely my favorite of the bunch.

Everspace 2 was fun, but never hoked me for some reason.

The most “Wing Commander” game in recent memory was Star Wars: Squadrons, IMHO. Shame they decided to make it CoD in space though… I’m not big on the multplayer aspect and the single player campaign was super short.

Starfield was a huge disappointment. etc etc

I believe they said the last expansion for X4 was the last one. Here’s hoping there’s an X5 coming.

Stillhart,

Well to be fair, X4 isn’t my favorite of the bunch because of its (lack of) similarity to Wing Commander. It’s not really that kind of game. But it is fun and scratches the space economy itch more like a Freelancer or Eve.

I hadn’t hard of Nebulous. I see what they’re going for graphically (Homeworld style). I’ll have to keep an eye on it. But yeah the fleet combat part of X4 never quite got me interested beyond “if I make 100 fighters, I should be able to take out pretty much anything”. Controlling large fleets was always a weakness of the game, one of the janky bits. But Building stations, setting up an economy, piracy, and all that stuff is still fun.

Stillhart,

Yeah, probably not my cuppa tea, but I will keep an eye on it. Space ships blowing each other up has potential, even if it’s not my favorite style of said activity.

And I bet it releases before Star Citizen for a fraction of the price!

Stillhart,

I didn’t pay for a spaceship sim. I paid for the next Wing Commander and Freelancer game. Whether I enjoy it or not, the product they’re making isn’t the product they sold me. Perhaps wasting your money buying the “game” now gives you a better chance of receiving the product you think you’re paying for, but I wouldn’t bet on it. They’ve already proven themselves to anyone paying the slightest attention.

Stillhart,

Hey, some of us paid for TF2 via the Orange Box. :P

Stillhart,

What you’re asking about here is value, which is a purely subjective thing.

Here’s the thing: we all play games for our own reasons. Some play for an interesting story, some play for challenging mechanics, some play to be scared, some play just for something to pass the time. How much you enjoy a game will depend on how well it meets your goals and that’s often hard to quantify.

If your sole purpose of playing is to pass the time, then sure $/hour is a great metric for how good a value it is.

And let’s not forget that people all have different amounts of disposable income. For someone with a lot of money to spare, it takes a lot less to make $60 “worth it” than for someone without reliable income.

At the end of the day, everyone has their own idea of value and it will change over time.

Stillhart,

For me personally, I tend to compare it to movies. I have no problem going out and paying $15-20 to go be entertained for 2-3 hours. By that metric, a $60 game needs to keep me entertained for maybe 10 hours for me to feel like it wasn’t a complete waste of money.

As I alluded to before, I tend to also value how entertained I am during that time. A good movie or a good game doesn’t have to be long to be worth the price of admission. And conversely, there are games that I have more time into that I feel like were not worth the price (coughDiablo4cough) but I kept playing because of a combination of sunk cost fallacy and trying to find what all those other people thought was so good.

Stillhart,

NGL, I bought a PS5 on the strength of the first two Spider Man games alone. Been waiting for this game for a long time. Glad to see the reviews are solid!

Stillhart,

Sooo… are the guys who made this living in a country that doesn’t enforce copyright law or something?

Stillhart,

Because of how much they “borrowed” from Fromsoft’s games.

Stillhart,

It’s funny, as often as I see these posts about free games on the Epic Games Store, I still have absolutely no desire to ever install or use it.

Stillhart,

Well they can’t make EA any worse, right? Right??

Stillhart, (edited )

Just in time for the only game Sony has put out to make owning a PS5 worthwhile! (Fingers crossed Spiderman 2 is as good as its predecessors.)

EDIT - To be clear, spoken as someone who was lucky enough to get a PS5 on day 1 and almost never uses it. I like the Xbox controller and UI much better and… there just aren’t many good exclusives. And a lot of the ones that are good end up on other systems anyways.

Stillhart,

To be fair, FF16 is on my list of games to play… but like you said, too many great releases at once. I figure by the time I get around to it, maybe I can get a price break.

Stillhart,

Literally both games that came out on other consoles that the PS5 so you don’t actually need a PS5 to play either of them.

Stillhart,

It’s funny to see this because I have found it to be the complete opposite.

First, the amount is surprisingly copious for a DLC. The new area they added is deceptively large because it has so much verticality. The main story missions for Phantom Liberty are also much longer than normal missions. The “like 5” you quoted is ridiculous because not only is it WRONG, it discounts the size of the missions.

They also added a ton of side missions and gigs, as well as two completely new side activities in car missions and supply drops. It’s a lot of content and just saying “they only added x number of missions” is reductive and frankly deceptive.

And maybe more important than the amount of content they added, the quality of the content is off the charts. The art style and creativity in the new areas is fantastic. It doesn’t feel like just more Night City, it really feels like a different area. It’s visually distinct from the original game; you know you’re in the new area without being told.

And the missions… the main story missions are completely different than anything in the original game. Fighting through the wreckage of a downed airplane to rescue the president and then getting thrown into a spy story complete with James Bond style banter over a roulette table! Idris Elba is amazing. Even the side missions are interesting with different ways to resolve them.

If you liked CP2077, I don’t see how you could possibly not like this DLC. They added more of everything that was good about the original game and did it at a higher level than the original game.

When I think of some of the other DLC’s I’ve paid for that are basically just a few extra missions and maybe a new companion or something, it makes this seem even better.

Now just so I don’t sound like a complete fan boy, I will say they added in a bunch of new bugs making the game less stable than it was in 1.63, which is really frustrating. But everyone gets those regardless if you paid for the DLC or not. So as much as it sucks that they added those bugs, it has nothing to do with whether you think the DLC is a good value or not.

Stillhart,

You realize that the 2.0 update that introduced all those new bugs is unrelated to the DLC right? Everyone got that update and those bugs regardless of whether they paid for the DLC.

Stillhart,

Are you fucking kidding? You should put this in your OP so everyone knows to completely disregard your post. You skip all the dialogue in an RPG and then complain that it’s too short and the missions are just fetch quests?

This has to be a troll post…

Stillhart,

Considering bugs are the main meat of your post, it seems like it should.

Stillhart,

Honestly, I think Idris Elba blows Keanu Reeves out of the water. Clearly we’re on very different wavelengths if you think the acting in this is worse than the base game.

Stillhart,

He probably loved the amount of “content” in Starfield.

Stillhart,

I’m still working through Phantom Liberty. It’s so well done, a step up even from the original game.

I’m quite sad that Cyberpunk 2077 is all done now, but I’m excited that they have started production on the sequel. Say what you will about CDPR and how they botched the launch of CP2077, they game as it stands now is fantastic and probably one of my favorite games of the last decade.

On the side, I’ve been playing a fun little indy twin-stick shooter rogue-lite called “Shape Shifter: Formations”. I tend to pick up a lot of these kinds of rogue-likes… they’re generally dirt cheap so it doesn’t take many hours of fun to feel like I got my money’s worth. I’m 20 hours into this one so far… $6 well spent!

Stillhart,

Starfield is indeed boring but NMS isn’t much better IMHO. It is better, but I agree that it gets old quick.

Depending on your tolerance for jank, you might want to check out “X4: Foundatons” for a great space empire game. Start in a one-person scout fighter and work your way up to whole fleets, build stations, pirate, trade, explore, etc etc.

Stillhart,

A free demo? I’ll buy that for a dollar!!

Stillhart,

Forza Motorsport comes out… today? Looking forward to that myself!

Stillhart,

Lego games with the kids are great fun. Lego Marvel Superheroes/Superheroes 2/Avengers are great if you want to keep exploring the Lego games. I have found that the older the Lego game, the harder it is. Some of the puzzle-solving in them can just be annoying and frustrating. I’d stick to the newer ones and work your way backwards rather than the other way around. They definitely learned from their mistakes!

Stillhart,

Dude, I’m scarred from Lego Batman 3. The puzzles in that game are just way too obtuse even for an experienced gamer. No idea how they expect kids to get through it. lol

Stillhart,

I’m not generally into farming games, but I do like the “Donut Country”/“Katmari” aesthetic and you asked nicely so I’ll give it a shot. :-D

Stillhart,

do stuff your own pace

This is the core of all their games. The guy who founded the company wrote his senior thesis on flow in gaming and every game they’ve made has been about helping you achieve flow while playing. The (very) short version is that the mechanics of the game let you intuitively set your own challenge level, which enables everyone to naturally reach a flow state no matter their skill level.

I am a really big fan of thatgamecompany. I didn’t really like Sky though.

Stillhart,

This is the one that immediately popped into my mind. “Alone in the Dark” is the game that made me realize I don’t ever want to play another horror game again! :-D

Stillhart,

This is the funnies thing I’ve read all week. Thanks!
