Megaman_EXE,

Recently, some games that shouldn’t have freaked me out, but did, were parts of Outer Wilds and Subnautica. Subnautica, in particular, got me with a very good jump scare that I think made me jump harder than any horror game has in the past decade lol.

I find games that induce dread really help with being scared. If you have any niche titles I would love to hear them too. I must have missed a lot probably anything prior to 2005. But even recent titles there’s a chance I could have missed them too!

Megaman_EXE,

I thought it was pretty good! There were definitely some tense moments for sure

Megaman_EXE,

It was definitely intense, that’s for sure. The aliens AI is pretty cool. At release, it was very exciting to see how advanced it seemed.

Megaman_EXE,

Absolutely! It was probably one of the scariest games I’ve played in recent memory. The dread it made me feel was unmatched compared to a lot of horror titles

Megaman_EXE,

The nail gun was so satisfying! The AI was cool! The way they would flank was pretty good for the time! The light and shadows were really great. Lots of tension mixed with the gun fights. In a lot of ways, Condemned reminds me of it, too.

Megaman_EXE,

Lol that’s true. Nothing like a creeper or two to sneak up behind you in the dark.

Megaman_EXE,

Oh man, absolutely anything to make me feel dread or have me not knowing what to expect. Which is vague, I know. I feel like I’ve played so many horror games that they start to feel too gamey? If that makes any sense? It’s like I can predict when scares will happen or the gamey aspects sometimes don’t immerse me.

Oddly enough, subnautica really had me on my toes a few years back. Fatum Betula was an indie that also gave me some heeby jeebies but wasn’t exactly scary either.

I feel like I’ll probably need to crawl through dozens of indie titles or something. Or possibly go back to titles made prior to 2005. I’m also not caught up on recent games in the past couple of years, so maybe there’s something special I’ve missed.

But I’m also just curious to hear what made everyone else scared, too!

Megaman_EXE,

Oh man I haven’t gotten a chance to try VR yet and I bet that would help immerse me in a whole new way. I can’t wait to see how VR improves over time

Megaman_EXE,

Yeah now that you mention it, there really haven’t been too many releases similar to FEARs gameplay style since then. It was a very unique combo of fps and horror. I would love to see someone tackle that style again

Megaman_EXE,

Ooh I think I’ve heard of that. Thanks, I’ll check it out!

Megaman_EXE,

I’ve only played a bit of 4 and lots of worlds. I really loved the additional stuff to do in worlds. I was enthralled by the exploration and little collectible stuff as much as the actual combat. I do feel like it’s a lot of fun with friends. Playing with Randoms feels scary lol.

I’ve been trying to finish iceborne at some point but I hit a brick wall at frostfang barioth for a long time and then got distracted with other games. I’ve been meaning to go back and finish but u have a feeling the next title will come out before then. I haven’t even gotten around to rise yet lol!

Megaman_EXE,

In the game, there are stones that you can find, and when you use them, they say something. There’s no voice chat in the games, so these can be used to communicate

Megaman_EXE,

I’ve been playing Mario Galaxy 2 for the first time. It’s pretty good, but I’m wondering what the hype was about. Perhaps it’s a product of its time in a way, but overall, it’s still a lot of fun. I keep dying at stupid parts, which is really funny. You can tell the developers really pushed their skills to the limits as all of the levels seem like they’re really well done.

I’ve been streaming a playthrough of Ghost of Tsushima, and I recently got to the DLC. I think the game does so many things right, but I have a few minor gripes. Overall, I really like the atmosphere and the world design. The environments are gorgeous.

Megaman_EXE,

So far, that’s exactly what it feels like. Which is good! But I think it could have been better?

I haven’t seen any Rosalina yet, which is a bummer, and the hub area is less exciting. But yeah, overall, the levels are just as solid as I remember them being in Galaxy 1. The music is definitely a highlight so far. Amazing tunes. And playing the game in co-op is actually kinda fun.

Megaman_EXE,

Wait what hold the phone. You don’t keep your skins from OW1 going to OW2?

Megaman_EXE,

Does the game require an online connection? I can’t seem to find the information on the web but I’m also not looking that hard so maybe I’m just dumb lol

Megaman_EXE,

One thing that always irks me with character customization is how often games have more customization options for girl characters. I have always assumed that developers only allocate so much time and resources to character creators and call it a day.

Megaman_EXE,

Hah that’s true. I thought it was odd that they mentioned how you could customize genitalia and then they had 2 options for penis’s and only one vagina option. It definitely seemed like an advertising strategy more than anything

Megaman_EXE,

I really like the switch. My only complaints are: I miss the 3DS like charm and customization.

I find it hurts to hold my switch in handheld for too long.

Otherwise, I think it’s a very neat machine

Megaman_EXE,

I’m in Canada and it’s not quite so dire. But I have noticed we are only getting like “main” titles in stores. If I go into a gamestop, their Xbox and play station sections are a quarter of what they were in 2008. The switch is in a much better state with a lot more physical copies (my guess is kids go into stores with their parents and ask for games, so it makes sense to have more physical copies).

I’m really torn because I like physical copies, but I’m also literally running out of living space. Additionally, so many games have patches with bug fixes on day 1. I’ve also been finding online has much steeper sales.

I kinda feel like the shift to online screws us all, though. Idk I’m just a giant ball of being conflicted about it lol

Megaman_EXE,

The head of bungie spent a shit ton on classic cars, but they’re laying people off… I really want to see wtf happened to bungie internally. It went to shit the past decade.

Megaman_EXE,

I’m hit or miss when it comes to walking sim games but I really enjoyed firewatch

Megaman_EXE,

I miss when bungie made halo. Bring back that bungie.

Megaman_EXE,

I think my favorite in the series is New Leaf so far. Granted, I didn’t play a ton of the GameCube version.

The only thing I wish new leaf did better was how you unlocked public works projects.

Additionally, villagers moving in and ruining your paths/designs was a pain. Otherwise, I thought the game was great. It could have used even more dialogue (which is crazy because it was already very long )

The games hit such a good mix of customizing, collecting, and discovery.

Megaman_EXE,

They rose the price of the game?

Megaman_EXE,

Ohhh dammit. Of course. Man that sucks. Thank you for clarifying!

I was hoping they would make gold cheaper because that’s really all that I need. But of course they tack on every other thing and then raise prices even more.

As a rental service game pass is great. But at regular price it is too much for me. I’m gona miss converting 3 years of gold to ultimate, though, lol. I’ll be going back to the cheapest tier when I run out.

Megaman_EXE,

I thought the games fundamental gameplay wasn’t as fun as the first game. But the story was interesting

Megaman_EXE,

I have not played it yet personally, but they have the turok trilogy bundle on the switch. I’ve heard those games are good. The serious Sam collection is also available and that’s a lot of fun

Megaman_EXE, (edited )

This made my morning :3

Edit: not a fan of Frank’s new look, though. He looks…different.

Megaman_EXE,

Thank you! I like it too haha. The battle network games are awesome

Megaman_EXE, (edited )

Stardew Valley is the game that keeps on giving. At this point, I wish there was just more. More towns to visit, more activities, more everything.

The only thing that does kind of suck is that after year 1 I feel like I’ve kind of mastered whatever I was attempting to do. I’ve heard some people say after year 1 is where they enjoy the game the most, but idk I feel like by that point I’m making more money than I need and the only thing left to do is collect stuff or attempt the skull cavern.

But man. That first year is a blast. I’ve been thinking I should try out more mods or possibly a jojamart run at some point

Megaman_EXE,

The first time I tried my time at Portia, I found building stuff took forever. I was trying to build a bridge(iirc?) And I felt like it was just going to be a lot of waiting. Was I playing it wrong?

Megaman_EXE,

Sorry for the late reply! This is an incredibly extensive list, thank you so much! I’ll have to give the game another go at some point here. It seems super charming, so maybe if I go into it with this added knowledge, I’ll be able to get my bearings. Have you tried the new game that just released a while back? I think it was called my time at Sandrock?

Megaman_EXE,

I am begrudgingly continuing my NG+ run of elden ring today so that I can play the DLC on Friday. It’s my own fault because I started NG+ thinking I would get through it. But after an almost 200 hour first playthrough, I was done and put it down.

I am not a big fan of how the DLC requires you to get further into the game to play it. But that minor gripe aside, I am quite interested to see where they take us in the DLC. I’m thinking I’ll need to fight my way to be able to respec again and I might go into the game as a spellcaster once more. Not quite sure just yet, but thinking about the possibilities is getting me a bit hyped haha

Megaman_EXE,

First to answer your question. Gosh man…I feel like everything is insanely expensive now. Food entertainment, resources, everything. It’s brutal. I went to a local used game shop and prices have not recovered since 2020. Some games are stupidly overpriced now.

Oh, I’ve seen this cabinet in person! It’s much smaller than I expected and would be kind of awkward to actually use. I’m 6 foot, and I would have to look down at it to use it.

It’s cool, though. The artwork is really neat.

I think if I was going to get a cabinet, there were only two ways I would want to go about it.

  1. I would probably make my own and spend a heck of a lot of time and money on it. It would be a pain to do, but the end product would be something that fits my tastes and works perfectly. Those cabinets that are essentially just big emulators seem to make the most sense to build imo.
  2. acquiring a DDR machine. I have no idea if you can even build those. I mean, I guess you could, but those would probably be expensive as heck.

I built a custom GBA a while back and I think when it was said and done I spent around $300+ CAD on it? It was more expensive than it needed to be, but it was a fun project to try. I taught myself how to solder too, which was fun.

The Indie Chat & Recommendation Thread (cdn.imgchest.com)

“Inspired” by the Square-Enix putting their foot in their mouth thread, I thought it’d be interesting to make a little thread about indie games. People always talk about wanting to try different, cheaper titles, but with how hard it is to get good gaming news and the state of advertisement/marketing, word of mouth tends to...

Megaman_EXE,

I don’t have time to read all this just yet because I’m at work lol. But I LOVE this topic. I’ve always been so torn on indie games. Some can be awful, but others are genuinely the best thing ever.

I will have to write out a list of my favorites in a bit

Megaman_EXE,

I loved the building, but I find the other half of the gameplay quite boring. Some of the more focused games i thought were a bit better, but it’s been quite some time since I’ve played them.

I really enjoyed the GBA titles

Megaman_EXE,

Have you seen any of the youtube previews of Paralives? I’m very curious if the building in that title will be better. They have a couple features that seem really nice

Megaman_EXE,

I’ve been streaming Lies of P the past week and I think I’ll start the Paper Mario Remake once I’m done that :)

I’ve also been trying to 100% we love katamari reroll. Not sure if I want to even attempt the 1 million roses part though. It seems far less fun than I thought it would be

Megaman_EXE,

I haven’t checked it out yet, but I saw someone had made a Lumines demake for the gba. Usually I end up finding out about them through forums and youtube

Megaman_EXE,

Some described it as metroid meets Outer wilds. Now I’m curious and might take a look. I’m not huge on sidescrollers, but it sounds interesting.

From the scores It looks like Animal Well is doing well.

I’ll see myself out

Megaman_EXE,

How did you get Diablo 2 to run properly? I haven’t had much luck getting it to run in windows 10

Megaman_EXE,

Interesting! I might just have to try it again then. Perhaps I will have better luck this time

Megaman_EXE,

Thank you!

Megaman_EXE,

Ohh that’s interesting. I found the anniversary edition to be quite a poor adaptation as well. I’m curious how the lost chapters plays on PC. I never got to play that additional content

Megaman_EXE,

Playstation and psp emulation is not something I’ve looked into much. I’ll have to do some digging!

Megaman_EXE,

That would be really interesting. Heck I would even just take people making more games with the gba’s restrictions. I’ve always thought it’s super interesting. As developers get used to working with a console or system, we end up rolling into the next generation. So they don’t really get to flex their skill as much as I think they probably could.

I sometimes wonder what we would see if older consoles had another 7 years of life added to them. I try not to think about it too hard or I get kinda sad about the games we’ll never see lol
