If you are in the mood to play Skyrim or the recent Oblivion remaster, but you don’t want to play a Microsoft-backed game for, oh, any number of reasons, the word on the grapevine is that open world RPG Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is pretty decent. We don’t have a review as yet, but Khee Hoon Chan called Questline’s...
It feels to me like the closer we get to the Nintendo Switch 2’s June launch and the, apparently, $80 games associated with it, the more people are fighting with themselves over what is and isn’t worth it. But at least Sony veteran and previous head of PlayStation Indies Shuhei Yoshida is free from inner turmoil – he...
Nah, people are reaching on this one. There’s a lot of reasons to be mad at Nintendo. Cartoony proportions being a low key hint at GenAI is not one of them
I saw someone, somewhere, saying something like this recently: it’s always easier to play the role of doomsayer than the optimist, because far fewer people seem to care if you’re wrong when you’re predicting something will fail....
It’s a privilege to work for a shitty mega corporation making substandard pay for the skills you have?! And those mega corps routinely buy up the small studios, so it’s not like people have to even seek out employment with them to end up working for them.
Another AAA game I want planning to play getting delayed doesn’t say anything about the games industry. Haven’t been excited about a AAA game in many years now. Everything is a bland cookie cutter sequel, remaster, or battle pass loot box multiplayer arena thingy.
Yeah, I do. A bunch of consolidations is AAA companies have left us steps away from a monopoly on publishers. Given the lack of competition, these big companies have gotten lazy and keep releasing the same shit over and over, some of it ripoffs, some of it remasters. People are getting fed up with it and their easy cash cows are now less profitable than they were.
Instead of changing their plans, they’re firing people. Because the only ones in charge are MBAs, not people who know what their products even are.
Big question: Why have alienated young men, especially in America, found their home in the populist political right? Part of the answer is that the populist right takes video games seriously....
This is an incredibly stupid attempt to bring games into a situation or is not involved in at all.
Young men have been driven right because a portion of the left have been really bad with their messaging and like to generalize a bit much about men being the source of social problems, despite young men being just as much victims to the billionaires who have been buying up our politicians to undermine our rights for decades. Society still has an outsized expectation for men to be the providers, despite women overtaking them in college degrees allowing them to often earn more.
The right wing preying on these ostracized people who often frequent gaming communities isn’t them taking gaming seriously. It’s them recognizing a hunting ground for manipulatable desperate people who want some kind of change.
Video games’ influence on popular culture has never been more prevalent. Their effect is visible and audible in today’s music, across the world of TV and cinema, and on the catwalk. Even your favourite language-learning and fitness apps feature progression systems and rewards popularised by games. To reflect the medium’s...
You can tell this survey was filled out almost entirely by millennials by this collection. Almost all games that came out during their childhood or their young adult years, except those 2 they’re playing right now. And pong.
If the least used operating system. Why limit your audience to such a small niche to begin with? Game development isn’t cheap. You tend to not want to lock out your chances of recouping that by blocking 90% of potential players
It’s still an argument, given that this historically wasn’t the case. And Mac used to have a bigger share of the pie. Do they even make Mac only games anymore?
But those numbers pretty much prove my point. Unless you’re already set up to be making games specific to a system, there’s no point in starting from scratch to only name something for 1-2% of the market.
I’ll start by saying I had a bit of trouble wording the title but I’ll try to elaborate on it. I find it can be a bit daunting at times figuring out what a decent entry point is in a series of video games without searching online first. Sometimes there will be ten games released across three different generation of consoles...
Very few game sequels are that tied in to it’s predecessor narratively that this is an issue. I would say the vast majority of games are designed to be picked up from anywhere in the series.
Even Mass Effect, where you play as the same character throughout a multi game story arc, still has each game giving the player an on ramp, and each game having it’s own miniature arc to play through.
I’m pretty sure people have, in this age of “let’s play” videos. You can see the gameplay play out in real time instead of listening to a brief, curated summary.

These people didn’t play Witcher 3. It’s mostly right wing rage bait podcasts. They’ll move on to a different side thing to be mad about in a few days.
Boomers’ children are grown ass adults with their own kids now. Those parents are the ones who grew up playing games. This dumbass narrative doesn’t play anymore
Who wrote this shit? You can’t make an article that’s half about wanting a new name for your field and end it with “there’s a lot of ideas” without giving a single one. Garbage.
It’s limited time, but also the selection these last few years has felt very uninspired. Everything is extremely derivative and been done to death.
There was a mass consolidation of developers/publishers recently, on top of further extended development cycles that has really limited any kind of variety we might have seen.
Nothing more disappointing to me than seeing a game I might enjoy… and then it’s only available on PC on Epic Games store. Why can’t it be available on Epic, Xbox game store and Steam? It’s so annoying, like you have no choice but to use Epic… which I would literally do ANYTHING not to use.
It sounds like slime you’re blaming your shitty internet on epic instead of providing an actual argument for why epic isn’t actually an alternative (it is). You want to suck up to a monopoly, just be honest about it.
No it wasn’t. We were taking about streams monopoly status and epic being one of the few alternatives.
YOU were the one trying to deflect the conversation into business viability. Which your entire side tangent really only reinforces how obscene the monopoly hold off stream is, that trying to break into the market is so expensive.
Do you know why 30% was chosen? It was the typical cut retail took. Physical stores selling goods take that much to cover their lease, logistics in moving those good to the store and employees.
Online stores do not share most of those costs. 30% is not needed.
