Steam Survey for July 2025 shows Linux approaching 3% (www.gamingonlinux.com) angielski

This is interesting for a couple of reasons. One is that this is about as much market share as Mac ever had at its peak, and almost twice as much as it has currently. Another is that, if you click the link for the site’s Steam Linux Data Tracker, you can see that English-only Linux market share (a crude way of filtering out...

Just avoid the games that use them.

Agreed. I have no desire to give EA root access to my system, full access to everything I do on it … just to play a game.

I’m amazed Microsoft even allows such on their platform, given how large of a vulnerability it creates; as CrowdStrike demonstrated.

An interesting fact: English-language adoption of Linux on Steam is over 2x the overall, all-language adoption. This mostly cuts out Chinese (25% of users), Russian (8% of users), and Spanish (5% of users). Seems America and Europe is adopting at record pace while China isn’t.

11% month on month expansion is fucking crazy. You can see from the data it’s mostly Windows 10 users deciding to upgrade to Linux…and even OSX.

Steam has over 132 million monthly active users

That month on month Linux expansion is ~422,000 computers. That is a shitload of people switching in just a single month.

OSes are sticky as hell. People don’t like switching. As Linux attracts these people away from Microsoft, MS is not going to get them back. And importantly, the adoption rate is high enough that many 3rd party companies are taking notice and releasing for both.

I’m still confused on why Netflix has any games.

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

the website’s admins do not want you to have any control over your front page. The end result is utterly alienating.

This is one of the biggest things. Back when I would netflix often, I would constantly be annoyed when the ‘continue watching’ dialog was not the first one. Stop moving it around! Now I just watch everything locally. It’s so much nicer.

There is no reason streaming should be such a pain in the ass, and it amazes me the industry has made basic, paid access to shows a chore. And they wonder why viewership is not great*.

*Also the writing generally sucks ass and assumes I’m not paying attention. No, seriously, they assume you aren’t paying attention and write shows as such now. It makes so many things unwatchable.

Palworld confirms ‘disappointing’ game changes forced by Pokémon lawsuit (www.videogameschronicle.com) angielski

With the implementation of Patch v0.5.5 this week, we must make yet another compromise. From this patch onward, gliding will be performed using a glider rather than with Pals. Pals in the player’s team will still provide passive buffs to gliding, but players will now need to have a glider in their inventory in order to glide....

Japanese ones are particularly worse. In the US a successful defense is prior art, there is no such defense in Japan.

BombOmOm,

Summoning creatures from an object is hardly “blatant plagiarism”. Many, many, many games have the ability to summon creatures from an object. Pokemon was certainly not the first one to do it…

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

What will you argue if I bring up the fact that they ripped off countless Pokemon?

The case case isn’t about character designs, the case is about patents Nintendo filed after PocketPair released a game with said mechanics. The idea that one should be able to patent a game mechanic someone else has already released in their games is BS. Japan’s patent system sucks and Nintendo sucks for abusing it.

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

As long as they let you turn off the upscaling I won’t complain about it. Unfortunately there has been a trend as of late to force it on; the artifacting drives me nuts. It’s always harder to to see in youtube videos though, since they are compressed quite a bit compared to live play.

Biggest thing that concerns me was their focus on pushing one into multiplayer in V. I’m worried that is going to intensify since it made them so damn much money doing that last time.

Either way, game isn’t out for a year, and it isn’t out for PC for probably two years. So, just going to go back to enjoying my Breath of Fire IV playthrough I’m currently doing. :)

I remember getting really annoyed at the LoL community as anytime you were in that balanced section they just wanted to surrender and get to the ‘your team stomps theirs’ sooner. Certainly not missing that game, every time one of my friends play it, the annoyance in his voice skyrockets.

The Pokemon games all being the same caused me to get bored of them years ago. And now with them suing Palworld for ‘capturing monsters with an object and summoning them in 3d space’, a patent made after Palworld released their trailer, I find the Nintendo brand actively harmful to the state of gaming.

Xenoblade

The Xenoblade series is made by a developer that is owned by Nintendo. If Nintendo doesn’t want people to rag on their products, they should make them better.

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Does Microsoft make Halo? Halo’s developer is owned by Microsoft, just as Xenoblade’s developer is owned by Nintendo.

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Why would they listen to your personal complaint if you, singular, are going to buy it anyway? Your voice only matters to a company if it means you won’t buy their product otherwise. Don’t buy the game, then tell them why you didn’t.

BombOmOm,

First of all, plenty of people would be happy to self-host a game for their friends, if they were still allowed the option.

Exactly! Me and my friends often play on modded Factorio servers that one of us hosts. This is only possible because the developer doesn’t lock things down to only the first-party (official) servers.

We don’t play with cheaters either (you aren’t getting invited to our server if you are). We play with our friends because it is fun, in a way no official server could hope to work.

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly, every time I say ‘I’m thinking of putting up a Factorio server, you want in?’, they are significantly less likely to be playing (or paying for) the newest game that has kernel-level access. Why, because we are playing Factorio for the next few weeks together and Factorio is fun.

Factorio isn’t the only game we play, but the point is to reinforce yours. If you are playing fun game x, your friends are more likely to play x instead of something else. Even if they have no care about Kernel-Level access, the fact you do affects their buying (and playing) patterns.

It’s Not Hard For A Billion-Dollar Company To Credit An Artist From Time To Time

The companies who own these games never bother to credit the artist

Some games that make for some fun coop and don’t require a ton of screen time. All of these are at least gold rated on ProtonDB so should be fine on the SteamDeck, though I’m not sure about crossplay with consoles on any:

  • Sanctum - An interesting combo of first person shooter and tower defense (Sanctum 2 was also real good)
  • Borderlands 1 - Looter shooter with some solid humor (Borderlands 2 was also real good, but goes downhill in later games)
  • MechWarrior 5 - Who doesn’t want to be a giant mech riddled with guns?
  • Left 4 Dead 2 - Fight together to escape zombies, or in multiplayer servers work together as the zombies to take out other humans

Now, less of a focus on shooters:

    Highly, highly recommend using GOG. Buying is owning. There is no DRM and they even provide offline installers for the games you buy.

    Bank transfers are slow. It is generally taken out of the account the next business day, sits in escrow for a few days, then appears in the destination account where it takes another day to clear. About a week total.

    Though, if it gets held for suspected fraud or needs to cross international boundaries, it can sit in that escrow account for much longer.

    Doubtful. The story in GTA 5 was much weaker than in RDR 2, and Rockstar’s direction with GTA has been shifting increasingly heavily on multiplayer and micro-transactions. GTA 6 will almost assuredly continue leaning increasingly heavily on multiplayer and micro-transactions.
