Computerchairgeneral, w Cities: Skylines 2 devs considered release delay to boost performance, but decided it's "not a dealbreaker"

I get their argument that a city builder may not need high frame rates, but the 5-10 fps people have been reporting doesn't seem ideal either. The management definitely should have given the devs time to work out these issues, but I'd imagine the profits they made from going ahead with the launch will outweigh any criticisms.

Decades later, and the lesson of E.T. for Atari has yet to be learned.

JakenVeina, w Cities: Skylines 2 devs considered release delay to boost performance, but decided it's "not a dealbreaker"

Let’s be clear, though: developers did not make this decision. Managers and publishers did.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Those managers and publishers were likely looking at their burn rate and needed to get some funding to come in to keep the studio afloat. It's tough out there for games right now.

ripcord,
@ripcord@kbin.social avatar

That's...a pretty big, pure guess there.

ampersandrew, (edited )
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Not really. If they could afford to release it after optimizations, they would.

ripcord,
@ripcord@kbin.social avatar

There is so much evidence of companies not doing the opposite, it seems like a really big assumption.

Andjhostet, w Cities: Skylines 2 devs considered release delay to boost performance, but decided it's "not a dealbreaker"

I think they underestimated how dramatic this community can be. Which is surprising considering the map size whining that happened.

Benign, w Squash all those irritating Starfield bugs with this essential community patch mod

"the minor bugs and issues that Bethesda hasn’t quite gotten to yet". I don't know any of those, I only know the ones they will willfully ignore for eternity 🙄

Good job, community patch people, saviours of Bethesda games.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@kbin.social avatar

I only know the ones they will willfully ignore for eternity

And why would Microsoft fix those when their paying customers even work for free?

SharkAttak,
@SharkAttak@kbin.social avatar

Exactly, and why are voluntary devs better than paid ones?

It is for me.

dumdum666, w Star Citizen’s Squadron 42 campaign is “feature complete” after 11 years

So after another short period of about ten years it will be released…

blazera, w Twitch now allows simulcasting to other platforms
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

Ah nevermind, twitch partners still arent allowed to

smallaubergine,

How do they know? Do they monitor your YouTube account if you have a twitch account?

ampersandrew, w Twitch now allows simulcasting to other platforms
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Which means I'll always watch on YouTube. Being able to pause, rewind, and play back at 1.25x speed to catch back up is such a critical feature that every other streaming site needs, but Twitch's exclusivity has made it difficult for streamers to utilize. Unfortunately, discovery on YouTube is horrendous, so maybe I find a streamer on Twitch and then watch on YouTube.

Pratai, w Star Citizen’s Squadron 42 campaign is “feature complete” after 11 years

ROFL!

MJBrune, w Star Citizen’s Squadron 42 campaign is “feature complete” after 11 years

feature complete just means they’ve truly entered a “beta” phase. They’ve made it through production, features have been completed and now the real work can begin on designers tweaking settings and balancing the game for the next year and a half.

Raji_Lev, w AAA Games Are Dying - It's Time To Indie
@Raji_Lev@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, some offense, but the Triple-Eh companies have been "dying" for over a decade now and it doesn't look like they're actually going anywhere anytime soon. Unfortunately.

MJBrune, w i've changed the appearance (layout) of the biggest video game site. do you know it?

I changed the layout of the biggest video game website ever. Have you heard of it? Gamebomb.ru

xiffu,

wow it's fantastic! is this your site?

Gordon_Freeman, w Report: Awful King Kong Game Was Made In A Year By Overworked Devs
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

According to one developer, the game was developed by no more than 20 people

Meanwhile this is being made by a single person

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8NOD5sCmeU

sheepishly,
@sheepishly@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, but how long did it take him, and how does the scope of his game compare to the King Kong game?

Miclux, w Cities: Skylines 2 dev says they were "caught off guard" by the success of the original city-builder after it sold 40 times more than their expectations

The CEO stated, “We were completely caught off guard by the game’s success, and we did not anticipate the success in the sense that it was never meant to be such a long-term commitment.”

This entire article is just bullshit. Even the title is wrong. It weren’t the devs…it was the ceo.

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

The CEO represents the company that developed the game. And in this context, dev = the company that developed the game. So yeah, it’s the dev [company] talking about stuff.

Miclux,

Wrong.

YMS,
@YMS@kbin.social avatar

Colossal Order was a company of 13 people when Cities Skylines was released. It's not like there is an out of touch CEO somewhere above 7 levels of management who has no clue what's going on with the people actually developing the game.

Miclux,

Do you really think a ceo has the same opinion like it’s employees?

YMS,
@YMS@kbin.social avatar

As rikudou said, in the context of "The dev of X never anticipated this success and it being a long-term project even after release", the dev is the company. And for the company, the CEO is the one who has to have a plan about the success of their projects and the future commitment to old products.
And as I said, in such a small company the CEO is not someone crunching numbers, restructuring departments and having meetings with partners all over the world all day. They are pretty much one of the dev team.

0xtero,

Dev as in ”Company doing the development”. Not the company that does the publishing. Not the developer who writes code. Represented by the company CEO

Miclux,

Then write “ceo” not devs.

0xtero,

"In the interview with Colossal Order CEO"

They did. Literally.

Colossal Order = "Cities: Skylines 2 dev"
