I haven’t bought Starfield, was waiting for sub-$25. If there are no mods, I’m lowering that to sub-$10.

ieightpi,

Seriously what a clusterfuck of a game this has been. I’m so happy I didn’t bite and buy it yet.

Hmm. Let’s see here…

Steam: 147
GOG: 174
Epic: 286

I’ve paid for about 2/3 of the Steam games, probably a quarter of the GOG ones, and maybe two or three of the Epic ones.

I have 367 games in my Epic library. A few of them are f2p (e.g. Fortnite) but the majority are giveaways. The only game I’ve purchased on EGS is Alan Wake 2 due to exclusivity

I’d say get a Steam Deck instead. The screen is really nice and they’re comfortable to hold. Plus, she can hook up a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to it if she really needs a bigger screen.

Wait a year and get a Framework 16

RickRussell_CA,

Asus TUF started freezing on games

But what did you do to diagnose it?

ASUS isn’t responsible for software, except to guarantee that the laptop can run the version of Windows that it came with. They’re just going to run standard hardware diagnostics, and if it passes, it’s golden.

Were there errors in the event logs? Did you remove unneeded startup programs and disable unneeded services? Did you do a full OS reset/reinstall?

fox_the_apprentice,

Did you do a full OS reset/reinstall

This, specifically from a fresh install media created directly from Microsoft’s site. Every PC manufacturer has a lot of bloatware as they attempt to separate themselves from their competitors via (sometimes hazardous) software.

Epic and GoG I’ve not bought a single thing from either of them, that’s all free shit. For Steam, most of that is stuff that’s been accumulated from Humble Bundles and just from having an account for ~20 years now. If I were to just quit my job and game full-time for the rest of my life, there’s probably more games to play in my collection than I have years left to live.

I mean, the only thing that’s really needed is the standard access to the creation kit. After that, I think modders can polish it up to competency, although flying to planets might be outside the abilities of the engine. I think anyone still hoping Starfield is going to be a good space game need to stop dreaming and go back to Elite/No Mans Sky/Waiting for Star Citizen, but there were some really elaborate mods for New Vegas and Skyrim back in the day. Maybe someone dedicated and talented enough could even fix that.

Kbin_space_program,

The trick is that they want paid mods so they can do nothing and get a decade of profit. Consider that many of the mods on Nexus have millions of unique downloads.

Even if they charge 3 bucks a mod and get a third of it, that's tens of millions of dollars with zero effort on their part.

But the primary issue is that the current modding framework they're pushing onto Skyrim doesn't support framework mods, so none of the big mods Skyrim is known for, and have kept it alive so long, could happen.

wizardbeard,

And that people will hopefully riot about paid mods again. The Skyrim framework flew under the radar because of clever timing. There’s no way it goes un-noticed on their newest flagship game.

“all new ways of traveling”

Will they add a metro?

Steam deck, rog Ally would be good options.

If you want a laptop that’s surprisingly not bad for the price look at the asus g14s. They go on sale every so often. Slap an extra stick of ram in there and you’re golden. Make sure to get gHelper from GitHub to get rid of all the asus bloat ware.

Yeah, but then you’d need the epic store/launcher, so…

jojowakaki,

There is legendary which is command line and Heroic which is legendary with gui without telemetry from epic. Heroic also does gog but gog doesnt require a launcher anyways.

Funfact, I have restricted work computer (windows). Certain websites are blocked and installing anything requires remote access by IT to enter admin password (they dont give admin rights temporarily). But it has pip installed.

  • pip install legendary
  • legendary install app-name
  • legendary run app-name

You can also create a shortcut and set the target as ‘legendary run app-name’. I also have over 300 games I collected from epic. I don’t condone gaming on work time, but it feels nice I can run something other than browser games during compiling and other downtime.

I got the tomb raider games and the screaming baby package delivery hideo Kojima game I can’t remember the name of right now, and some stuff I’ve never played, and that’s it. Worth it.

mariusafa,

Death Stranding. Good game, I bought it on steam on discount and it’s great.

Karma farming, much? lol

Yeah and owning the privilege to have games on Steam is any better.

catloaf,

Karma doesn’t have any use on Lemmy. You can’t even see the numbers any more.

shiroininja, do games w Guy never bought a game on the Epic Store... Owns 200+

I treat launchers like I treat social media. No new ones after around five years ago. So a pass from me. I have enough games.

bamboo,

For the record, the Epic Game Store launched on December 6, 2018, and is over 6 years old now.

Ilflish, do games w Bethesda confirms they are working on releasing new features you asked for, from city maps, to mod support, to all new ways of traveling next year for Starfield

If the modding community likes Starfield it should really help with the emptiness of space at least. I can imagine the idea of just building an entire quest line in your selected planet would be nice for avoiding mod conflicts

Katana314,

I’ve heard secondhand the people working on a coop mod, after making one for Skyrim, gave up on it after deciding the game is just bad and uninteresting.

Ilflish,

I know that happened but I’d need to see more of a consensus from modders before I call it a wash. If modders continue to add to the game, it will likely become more appealing and the actual foundation to add mods seems pretty decent.
