Geek_King, do games w how do you have fun even a game have a grading system?

I have the same issue with grading systems. I feel judged, and don’t want to continue until I get a better rating. Generally this ends with me petering out on the game faster than usual.

nandeEbisu,

I feel like the high from reaching a difficult objective wears off too quickly for me to really feel worth starting the next challenge.

Geek_King,

Same here, I’ll grind against a level to get a good grade, then feel too daunted to start the next level.

OP’s perfect world.

Buy game. Install game. Launch game. “YOU WIN!”

DeriHunter,

You can play fromsoft or any souls like game which probably harder than any Japanese grading game and still hate it. It’s not about easy/hard. The fact that you don’t understand it and try to offend op shows what person you are, I give you a D lmao

Honestly, I can’t stand Soulsbornes.

It’s okay to be bad at stuff. And, surprise! All of us are, no matter how many people tell us we’re perfect at everything and can do no wrong.

I’m not going to let it ruin my day like OP if a videogame tells me I did less than SSS performance on a level.

DeriHunter,

Good for you (not being sarcastic). For me, I can’t overlook it. I need to have a good score, the entire game revolve around it and me trying to get a good grade. This feels a chore for me, and although I know that it doesn’t mean anything about myself, I still get a bad feeling when it happens and when I do get a good grade, I don’t feel relived, I feel like this is what I needed that do and it was expected of me.

The fact that it bother me, doesn’t mean I want to install a game that says “you win”. I like challenging games, but a different challenge.

I suppose I could’ve been less of a butthole about it…

But I just look at the letter grade on games like Devil May Cry or Final Fantasy 13 and think “why is that even here?”.

Then I just pay no attention to it at all. It’s not like a bad grade means you beat the level any less.

And if they base trophies off it, then I don’t try getting all the trophies. More often than not, getting a Platinum Trophy on a game sucks all of the fun out of it anyways. Hard pass.

learningduck,

Guess you didn’t reach the second paragraph.

It’s funny, even though mechanically they’re the same, different games make it feel different.

Like, if a game presents them as special objectives or something, that seems okay. Extra stars for extra achievemnt? Fine.

But when they say “you finished the level… I rate you a D+” that’s kind of a kick in the nards.

Katana314,

It’s definitely nicer if there’s far less visual emphasis to it, like having the score be in small font rather than slammed in the middle of the result screen.

learningduck,

Yeah, I don’t have this kind of issue with Hitman’s grading at all. Guess, each grade (Progressional, Silent Assassin) isn’t judgmental.

papel,

Same applied to the original Medal of Honor, though I never understood why some of those grades were given, I think they had more to do with where most of your shots landed?

learningduck,

I don’t remember grading in the original MoH. Guess I was too young to care about that. Finishing games is already too hard for me back in the day.

Broken_Monitor, do games w how do you have fun even a game have a grading system?

First play through ignore the grading system. I know I’m going to get a crap grade - I need practice, upgrades, moves unlocked etc. I will only worry about that system on a second play through where I know exactly what I’m doing and now I’m ready to try perfecting it. At that point I must still be enjoying the game and the challenge of doing better. Most games I never do this, but some of them are really fun. I think if you worry about the grade right away its like skipping classes and homework and going straight to the test. Yeah, you’re probably going to have a rough time.

IMO, just ignore the grading system and have fun. Once you’re hooked enough and actually want to improve, that’s when you will want to start paying attention to it.

Delta V: Rings of Saturn

Such an atmospheric and cosy game. I’m a sucker for hard sci-fi and games that try to simulate real physics to the greatest extent possible.

Smashing some Titanfall 2. It’s included with EA Play/Game Pass Ultimate and it’s a ton of fun. We’ve been doing 4 player co-op “Frontier Defence” mostly; think arcade “MechWarrior” meets tower defence. Tons of fun!

I started playing Horizon Forbidden West, while this game is still okay, it seems like it’s taking some steps backwards:

  • it’s becoming more AssAssIn’s Creed like, with lots of stuff on the map
  • they should retire the focus / investigative / detective vision, because it’s really hard to see now
  • the movement is still janky, Aloy feels slow even on a mount. While the climbing doesn’t feel good
  • too many button inputs, sometimes they also feel inconsistent, and sometimes it feels like they are running out of buttons on the controller
  • way too many weapons / armors that I probably won’t use. Why not discard the rarity type, and let user level up the weapons instead?
  • it also has the trap of games with HDR, aka it’s too dark to see
  • foliage sometimes obscures the whole thing that you can’t see what’s happening
  • while side quests are unique, many of the characters are kinda boring and forgettable. Often I need to sit thru a long and boring / predictable conversation just to get a quest started.

Besides those complaints, I am still enjoying the game. It has an unique setting, and gameplay that prioritizes bow and arrows. However it feels like they are moving into AssAssIn’s Creed bloat.

I’m kinda playing too many games in parallel at the moment. I bought Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty and did prepare to start, but I have yet to start the first mission. I played a lot of Barony, which has been great fun. And in between I also played some Whisker Squadron: Survivor, which is a funny little game imo. Cities Skylines 2 is also close to release, so it’s gonna get even busier then

Recently beat Lies of P.

I am a huge souls fan, and Elden Ring is probably my favorite game of all time.

I was expecting Lies of P to be a competent souls knockoff, but it’s so much more than that.

It has some issues, sure. But I really think the game is superb. I am beyond excited to see what they do next in the genre. They got so many things right.
