Krauerking, (edited ) do games w What games are just objective masterpieces?

So I think it’s actually really important that the games that would be considered objective masterpieces would have to overcome any language barriers and be an experience approachable by anyone. You can learn the mechanics to enjoy the gameplay without words
So:

  • Portal
  • Journey
  • Binding of Isaac
  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Metro 2033 (which I have sat on and I believe even if it was entirely in Russian you would still get it )
  • DOOM (original you don’t need words you shoot)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Katamari Damacy

Then there are dialogue option stories that are fantastic stories that I could consider greats but shareable masterpieces is hard to say as they rely on you speaking the language both literally and then gameplay wise:

  • Stanley Parable
  • Outer Wilds
  • Tales From the Borderlands
  • To the Moon
  • Talos Principle
  • Golf Club Wasteland
  • Dead Space

What’s left of edith finch.

Such an amazing game. Absolute masterpiece.

TheOakTree,

This is the game I used to convince my film nerd friends that games can be art too. They really enjoyed playing through it!

  • Portal 1/2 of course.
  • Grim Fandango. (Flawed yes, but absolutely a masterpiece)
  • Psychonauts.
  • Fallout New Vegas.
  • System Shock (the original).
  • The Longest Journey.
  • Mass Effect. Maybe.
fpslem,

Portal 1 & 2 were the first to my mind as well. I really like this list, actually.

swordgeek,

Glad to hear it.

I’m tempted to add Red Dead Redemption 2 to the list, but it’s too new for me to decide yet.

I think it belongs. It was the greatest storytelling game I’ve played in a decade or more.

Zetta, do games w What games are just objective masterpieces?

Team Fortress 2

The best teamshooter game to date, endless copy cats that suck ass.

weirdbeardgame,

And the character trailers are hilarious.

“That thing … It scares me,” Pyro shooting bubbles and lollypops in his mind actually causing pure death and destruction

MintyAnt,

It does have a couple sore points. The whole aimbots running rampant was awful. And it was one of the first major games to introduce and popularize micro transactions.

Zetta,

Both true points, however Its still my favorite game of all time. To be fair I am a fanboy, my steam year in review last year was 99% TF2. I don’t really play any other games besides tf2 still.

Minesweeper.

Simple, endlessly playable.

I’d say games that have set the standard for their genre, and have not been surpassed, would be the only ones that count.

  • Half Life 1 and then again with 2
  • Half Life Alyx
  • Age of Empires II
  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Warframe
  • Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
  • Knights of the Old Republic
  • Fallout: New Vegas
  • Crash Bandicoot: Warped
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and then again with Tears of the Kingdom
  • Elden Ring
  • Hollow Knight
  • Dirt Rally
  • The World Ends With You (the original NDS version)

Honestly, many of them you know full well, but that’s because yes, they are that good:

  • Minecraft
  • TES III Morrowind and TES V Skyrim
  • The Witcher 1 and 3
  • Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Dishonored 1 and 2
  • Warcraft III and World of Warcraft

Completely deserve their legendary status

mohab, do games w What games are just objective masterpieces?

Well, none because favorites are super subjective, but I'll shout out my favorites because no one else did:

  1. The Wonderful 101
  2. Bayonetta
  3. Ninja Gaiden II
  4. God Hand
  5. Viewtiful Joe
  6. Catherine
  7. Gravity Rush
  8. Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R
  9. Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes
  10. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
  11. Crimzon Clover: World EXplosion
  12. Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi
Krauerking,

Catherine deserves to be on someone’s list so glad you have it and Gravity rush is a good choice cause it was a fun use of mechanics.

@scheep@lemmy.world avatar

someone should make a yellow console. Yellow is a good colour.

Jimmycakes,

Maybe steam can take yellow since it is open

scheep,
@scheep@lemmy.world avatar

A yellow steam deck and/or steam machine would be cool

JackFrostNCola,

What about purple? purple goes great with black, grey & white.

scheep,
@scheep@lemmy.world avatar

purple would be cool too. orange would also be interesting…

TrustedTyrant, do gaming w Controller for ShieldTV and AppleTV

8bitdo makes some good controllers that offer better value than the first party ones. I have the older sn30pro+ and while I would like a pro 2 mine still works so I’m not in any rush to buy it.

endeavor,

Seconding 8bitdo. I have the new 2c. For 20 bucks you get a controller that shitty brands like ms, razer and logitech charge you 250 for.

arrowMace, do games w What are some good cooperative shooters? Hidden gems?

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a Borderlands spinoff shooter/RPG that’s co-op and happens to be free to claim on Epic games store this week. I haven’t played it yet but really enjoyed the Tiny Tina DLC for Borderlands 2.

I haven’t been accepted (yet, fingers crossed) into the beta but just wanted to say that this is such a cool project! Good on you for making and sharing it!

schamppu,

Thank you so much! When did you apply to the Closed Beta? We did accept before the current wave practically everyone who had applied before it launched.

If you applied long time ago, make sure to check out portal.walkscape.app/account page if you already have got the access but missed the email.

CatsGoMOW,

Well I think I’m just an idiot… I signed up for an account I think when I saw your very first post about it here. But I don’t think I ever actually submitted the beta application since I overlooked there was more than just signing up. 🤦‍♂️

Either way, I’m all set now since I just decided to donate instead.

This is a cool project, glad to see things are still progressing. Is there an option for manually adding activities (like cycling or workouts), or is it solely based on the step counter of the phone?

schamppu,

Thank you! There is no option for that yet, but cycling basically does work if you have your phone in your pocket, or you use your watch on iOS in what we call “ankle monitor” mode. Current thinking is that we want to keep it steps based, but proper cycling support is planned. Manually adding activities likely won’t be a thing other than maybe in the single player mode, as that could be abused by players way too easily.

shittydwarf,

It didn’t cross my mind that people would play themselves that way but that totally makes sense

Hey, thanks for the game, got accepted recently and have been really enjoying it.
Sadly I’ve just come 3rd in the parents race at my kids sports day at the cost of pulling my calf muscle so it look like I’ll not be getting many steps in over the next few days.
Keep up the great work, I’m looking forward to see how it progresses.

schamppu,

Thank you so much, and that sucks! But prioritizing recovery is the key, WalkScape isn’t a sprint but a marathon, so there are a lot of opportunities to get more steps in once you’ve recovered your calf muscle <3
