boblin,

Alley Cat, Dukem Nukem 3D, Ultima (4, 5, and 7), Daytona, Day of the Tentacle, Zack McCracken…

omnomed,

As if I wasn’t making myself feel old enough man you had to mention Ultima…

yeah,

How did I forget about Alley Cat?

I mentioned this in another comment as well.. but...

Ultima IV is free on GOG: https://www.gog.com/en/game/ultima_4

Also have you seen MoonRing? It's a very recently released game, very Ultima inspired game from one of the original devs on Fable.

Fuckin Golden Sun was super legit. I even loaded up an emulator and replayed just a few years ago. It holds up perfectly well.

omnomed,

All hail Retroarch, All hail mobile emulation!

TheEntity,

If you'd be interested in a kind of spiritual successor, try CrossCode. Not exactly the same, the combat is very different, but the general exploration reminds me of Golden Sun a lot.

We need more Golden Sun in the world today

One that never really took off for the N64 almost surely because the controls were so fucked - Jetforce Gemini.

Those who took the time to tolerate and master the janky controls were rewarded with a shooter that was otherwise second to none. AND YES THAT INCLUDES 007!

Hearing the music cranks the nostalgia up to 10 immediately.

I’ve got a really fond spot in my heart for The Neverhood. It really opened my young eyes to the possibility that video games could be weird and artistic. They didn’t have to be an action packed generic mainstream capitalization of whatever is popular at the moment. As a kid, I could still tell it was a unique piece of work that required a lot of passion and creativity. I consider it the first indie game I ever played and it absolutely set the tone for what I chose to play to this day.

I still listen to the soundtrack nearly three decades later.

Chef_Boyargee,

Thank you for mentioning this. My personal favorite was Skullmonkeys. High school in the ‘90s was a wild place.

We grew up poor but my parents managed to get us an nes. We had a half a dozen games we’d trade back and forth with friends.

Megaman 3, Jackal, fist of the north star, Batman, street fighter 2010, TMNT, are some of the great games I grew up on

Albbi,

I was a beast at Jackal. Could play that game without dying easily, and made up my own lyrics to the music. (I remember one song was about Colgate Jr.)

I think I loved how in so many games getting hit by any enemy meant death. But here you could run over guys. Fun game.

The Witness has a secret area with some.

It has what now? I guess I have to play it again, again.

bermuda,

It’s called the challenge. I won’t spoil how you find it, but it’s extremely well hidden and even just getting there can be a pain without looking up a guide. Once you get there you have something like 3 minutes to finish a variety of puzzles, each of which is randomly generated (one of which is randomly generated based on your solution to a previous randomly generated puzzle). They aren’t insanely difficult per se, but you definitely need pretty good mastery of all the mechanics to get them done.

Unfortunately, and sorry for the spoiler, but the reward is disappointing. Mostly worth it for the steam achievement. If you like philosophy videos then it unlocks one of those. If you don’t know about the philosophy videos then there’s a lot about the game you haven’t found yet.

OK thanks for this info. On my next-up list when I finish The Talos Principle 2.

Beaker,

One game that I loved and never see too many people commenting on was Tomba!, specifically Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return.

I’ve been playing Soulstone Survivors. I kida forgot it existed and was searching the Steam Store for a Vampire Survivor like and was reminded I own it.Itt is clear that the makers were in the middle of making a ARPG rougelike when VS came out, and they successfully made the change. As a result, it has well fleshed out systems across the board.

Star wars Jedi knights games for sure. Asheron’s Call also got a lot of playtime as my first MMORPG. Tony hawk pro skater 2.

spacecowboy,

Do you remember which server you played for AC?

giacomo,

It was so long ago, I honestly can’t recall. I remember playing on one of the pve servers for a while before moving to a pvp server.

Edit: Did you play as well?

spacecowboy,

I did! I played on Harvestgain server (and then near its end I moved to a PvP server)

Sea of Stars.

It's a nice take on an old school JRPG. Keeps the complexity manageable, doesn't take itself too seriously on the story, but stays engaging.
