It made more sense if you grew up with the evolution of the controller. SNES - L and R are the left and right buttons on the top. PS1 - L2 and R2 are the buttons behind the left and right buttons on the top. PS1 dualshock - L3 and R3 are the left and right sticks being pressed in.

The first game that really wowed me with its water was Wave Race 64, so this tracks. I first noticed that home consoles were getting better graphics than arcades when I saw WaveRunner’s water compared to Wave Race. It was really a “writing on the wall” moment for seeing the end of the arcade.
Right, but the OP said being unable to go online to update the firmware made it a prime piracy machine. It follows that it has to be jailbroken to qualify as such.
