bandario, do piracy w (Solved) Does anyone know if there are still clean DVD ISO rips of Grand Theft Auto IV around?

That’s because Russians see the value in the collective good: everything for everyone. The majority of the globe just hits and runs on torrents because we got ours, fuck everyone else.

Yeah, 256gb doesn’t really get you very far these days. Everything is so bloated, including the operating system.

I hear what you’re saying, but I have about 200 games stored on a traditional HDD that only provides me a read speed of about 220MB/s absolute maximum and I have never had a single issue with any game running from it. As you say this could become a problem as devs adopt directstorage but as it stands right now, it’s a total none-issue.

I have a 2TB NVME M.2 drive in my PC but don’t really see any advantage to putting games on there, that’s what bulk storage is for. If you are playing online, 99% of games will have a countdown or otherwise make you wait until the slowest PC is also ready to go. If it’s a game that uses loading screens, I really don’t care as it still loads pretty damn fast.

Pretty much the only games that I will throw on my M.2 drive is open world games that load as you go if I am on my first playthrough. RDR2 lived on there for a while.

I am happy to pay whatever extra it costs to have the experience of actually owning a game on a lasting medium with some artwork. My experience with digital downloads is that I just never care as much. Often I won’t even finish the game unless it is beyond amazing. I like to receive tangible things for my hard earned money I guess.

I don’t think you understand economies of scale. It doesn’t make sense for me to pay retail price for a single unit, especially if I have no other use for it. These costs are trivial at scale, and would also hopefully provide some impetus to optimise the code and texture storage.

I’ve got a better idea. You want to make your game stupidly large? Ok fine, sell me a physical copy pre-installed on a fast USB stick. Job done.

Nicotine doesn’t cause cancer. Like, not at all.

If you want to be a pedant, follow through. It’s inhalation of the biproducts of combustion that causes cancer. It’s burning tobacco that causes cancer. It’s tobacco grown with fertilizer that locks in lead isotopes that causes cancer.

bandario, do gaming w What games have you played in the last 365 days that stand out to you as the most memorable experiences?

Yeah I bought it. It plays really well, but I just couldn’t get past the graphics. I didn’t spend 7K on my rig to play stickmen.

I was so angry when Battlefield 2042 came out in 2021. SO MAD. I’d waited years for that game, and the state it was released in was downright embarrassing. Just not even in the universe of finished or playable - it was a joke.

I was so furious because I’d convinced my friends that it was going to be amazing. Thankfully we all signed up for EA Play for a month rather than buying a copy for $90AUD.

We all went and played call of duty for 2 years instead, but it fractured the group.

Recently BF2042 went back on sale for $20. A friend sent us all some youtube videos and convinced the whole squad to give it another run as they had been actively working on the game for the entire two years. I’m so glad he did!

We have had some absolutely epic 128 player matches the last 4 months. So much fun, it has felt like the old days.

One friend has put in the hours and learned to be a pretty competent chopper pilot. We have had a couple of games with a full squad in the chopper repairing and gunning and managed to stay alive the entire match without a single death. Absolutely legendary.

We’ve had others jumping between vehicle and ground play and basically turned the tide of battle just with our little squad. Man we’ve had some fun! It’s the first time in years that I’ve regularly managed to field a full squad all on voice comms and it’s just been so great.

bandario, do gaming w Roblox is ready to grow up
@bandario@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I am having a really hard time being supportive of my daughter’s use of Roblox.

We supervise reasonably closely so I’m not overly concerned about it from a child safety point of view even though the platform has a long history of not being a particularly safe online space.

The part that I’m worried about is that 99% of the content seems totally and utterly pointless. Most games have zero objectives and just centre on some stupid novelty game mechanic: oh, your neck gets longer, or you can be a wolf. What do we do now? Oh, we just walk around. We’re a wolf.

There’s nothing to achieve, there’s no skill involved, no mastery of a game mechanic. It just seems completely without value to me. I’m stuck questioning if I’m just out of touch or if I should try and guide her towards taking on something a little more challenging.

The only part I like is that she plays with her school friends on the platform - they use external voice comms and just kind of hang out…I just wish they would do the same thing on a game that would challenge them in some way.
