As much fun as I’m having with starfield(150 hours since September 1st, because yes I pre-ordered but it was also the first time I’d pre ordered a game in a very very long time ) that was my take on a lot of its issues. I won’t say they did no QA playthrough but it certainly feels like they didn’t do enough and that was after delaying the game even for like an additional 2 years. Supposedly they were all set to launch the game in late 2021 but Phil Spencer paid them to work on bug fixes for longer. Then nonsensical design choices like not having med pack counters where your grenade counter is or a “current equiped power” info area above your current equiped weapon info area on the HUD in 2021 or 2023 is laughably unthinkable. But the meat of the game has been worth the questionable sourced veggie “bugs” on the burger as a whole imo.
Iunno I could see them adding some sort of tiny 4x4 or even a motorcycle. Could even make it so you have to keep it in a hab on your ship so it makes sense it spawns when you land.
I’ve had 0 hard crashes but a few soft crashes since entering the final stretch of the MSQ. Sarah and Walter are stuck “talking” to each other permanently despite Sarah being in my ship and Walter the lodge. And if I try to talk to either of them the game locks up whenever it’s time for the other npc to chime in and I have to reload. I also had a random soft crash where I couldn’t enter the lodge from new Atlantis no matter what I did until I restarted the .exe(I’m thinking it’s related to the convos bug I’m experiencing). Also the weird movement bugs like someone walking away from you during a convo or crew members floating in or through random places in my ship. Also have a flashing texture issue for a few seconds after accessing the inventories in the armory ship habs.
Outside that I’m getting 50-70 fps with mostly high settings at 1080p.
Not op either but 52 hours in: my verdict is basically Typical Bethesda Game. For better or worse with all the quirks and jank you’d expect from Bethesda. Bugs are hit and miss for all platforms, I’ve played only on PC and had 0 crashes anecdotally. Have had some flashing textures, minor physics bugs like with corpses infinitely jittering around if I walk on them. Had my worst bug this AM when I was talking to my companion she wouldn’t stop walking forward and eventually was just walking into a wall the entire time while we were talking. Difficulty is basically non-existent below hard unless you do something really stupid like sit in lines of fire or take a shotgun blast to the face.
I’ve wasted a lot of time pimping my space ship out because despite having some annoying limitations, it’s a lot of fun to basically build a spaceship Lego style. Spent a lot of time building outposts to mine resources for upgrades and doing side quests for Freestar Rangers(like a sort of Wild West Themed Police Force) and the UC Vanguard(like your stereotypical starship troopers government outfit where service=citizenship) because MQL can take a while to pick up. Overall the stories are entertaining if a little stream lined.
Graphics are hit and miss for a variety of reasons, I have been both honestly awe’d by some of the wildlife, mechs/robots, and landscapes while also thinking, especially with close ups on faces, how last gen so many of the NPCs look and the jarring perspective of seeing both in the same scenes.
Combat is just…barebones. Like Skyrim with guns. You have jetpacks sure, variety of melee and ranged weaponry, but if you’ve played any infantry space shooter before you’ve played the combat in Starfield. It can be fun to come up with strats depending on the scenario like assaulting an outlaw cave versus a space out post or using the landscape to your advantage but ultimately it’s just a sort of modern same old same old. You can at least customize your weaponry/armor except for melee weapons(at least so far). Space combat is also decently fun but every ship feels and fights like a space fighter. It makes no sense especially since it kind of defies the sci fi convention, that capital ships don’t fight like tiny space craft.
Just the base game would be a 7.5-8/10 for me, random Lemmy user. It is on a base level a pretty good game but there is some real rough edges game design wise that some people may have difficulty looking past, like space combat not being anywhere as open as they claimed and lots of loading screens.
I had my first personal annoyance with this when I had to grav jump(like warp from star trek or light speed from star wars) from system to system manually to “explore” the path ways to the system I had a quest at. I went through 6 silly loading screens just to unlock the path and nothing of any super interest happened RNG event wise.
I made a post like this sentiment elsewhere in this thread but I agree 100%. I was kinda forcing my way through some parts because I was just barely interested enough to continue. Then I had a few ohhh shit moments like taking over my first varuhn great serpent fanatic pirate ship and some of the UC Vanguard missions. I don’t know how they could improve/streamline it but they should work on it for sure.
At the very least just lower the voice volume of companions in sneak even if it’s lazy fix. I don’t need breathy whispers in my ear for funny or throw away dialogue. But that’s just my thoughts maybe other people are different.
I can echo that sentiment. The MQL starts really slow and has a lot of exposition overlord as is normal for Bethesda games. Once I started doing side missions for the UC Vanguard and “pimped my ride” xzibit style I got hooked.
Well that’s just not factually accurate. The accurate thing would be it causes so little wear and tear it might as well not count. But using ANYTHING causes wear and tear to build up eventually.
