I guess I have the fact that I wasnt alive for that ‘era’ of gaming, so its maybe a bit more fascinating to me to see a more utilitarian design over what we get now.

I dislike the move in PCs and consoles where everything has RGB (you’ll see it everywhere on SBC retro handhelds), or just looks garish. To me this boxy-box just looks BEAUTIFUL. Gray/beige hardware wins me over every time

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

…well at least it’s prettier this time!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, once I figure out if there is anything fancy needed in cross-posting and do so in a sec!

I was on Lemmy years ago, but its been so very long that ive forgotten almost everything I once knew!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Done, as its own post in the community. Happy to!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Hah!

You got it in one there. Thanks so much :)

I just hope the little, fun and interesting things I love to share keep on being interesting to others! And its nice to be here, I was very sad to leave Reddit towards the end of last year, and the Steam Deck community I built up there. Nice to see an alternative like this exists here (with nicer folk, so far!)

I appreciate it!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sorry, that’s not really my scene! I haven’t ever played any PC racing games locally (which makes me seem rather sad, doesn’t it?)

I can recommend Mario Kart 8, emulated, for this though! Which might or might not be something you’d consider. Friends and I often play this through my Steam Deck or PC!

Further:

  • sadly no store pages are live yet to wishlist
  • the release date is September 5th (for some reason skipping Judgement Day’s date?!)

Steam Deck Gaming News (lemmy.world) angielski

As a preface, I used to do this a lot on Reddit. My hobby (sounds odd) was to make a little old-school-blog-style post, detailing what I found interesting in gaming in the last week or so. I got a name for it, for a time, but having long-since abandoned reddit I thought I might try the same thing here, if you’ll indulge me!...

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Ugh. Formatting is a nightmare.

Sorry, all.

Hello!!!

Junk-Store is a wonderful piece of software! Eben (the dev) has a background in the same field of work I am in, pen-testing. He’s also a talented programmer! JS runs on the Deck, but also on Bazzite, after Kyle (Bazzite dev!) noticed his work and how well it suited things there.

Its no secret the upcoming version won’t be Decky Loader dependent however, so make of that what you will!

I’ll literally tell Paweł that you’re a Heroic fan! And I’ll pass on a link to this comment so he can see that I am praising his work wherever I go! <3

(I shared the link, hi Paweł!!!)

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I believe you need to scan the QR code to install it on Apple phones!

store.epicgames.com/en-US/mobile/ios

(and thank you, its kind of you to say!)

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Ahhh thank you!!!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I’d like to!

At some stage this was a weekly thing for me, at least on Reddit under another username.

I focused primarily on GOG and Epic, because few users covered their news. In fact one game site offered me a job (or the beginnings of an offer) after they gained some popularity.

Regardless, I’d love to post these in a somewhat regular manner. Hard to know what I find interesting is for others, before I try it. Looks like it might be though!

Thank you so much <3

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you so much!

It was bought by a crypto company that pushed aggressive monetization, and fired most of the original staff.

Constant nerfs to the original gameplay, invalidating months of users’ grind by removing (‘improving’) core mechanics.

This is why the popularity dropped, but as to their official announcement, it was very short on details. Just another failed game, sadly.

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

*ma’am!

You’re so welcome! It’s a bit of awful thing, writing up something like this and wondering if it’s going to go down okay (for me anyway!), but that might be a lot of the typical Reddit user responses tainting my previous experiences doing this kinda thing!

I’m glad the responses are positive here, you can count on this being a regular thing <3

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

It’s definitely more polished and complete now! The dev also works hard, especially if a user has any little issues, they have a Discord and Git page all where help and previous issues are detailed and worked out step-by-step on a fix. There’s also a huge list on games which work via Legendary, and any tweaks users have reported to make games work are listed there on the Discord, too.

I’d be curious how you find it, after so much time has passed between the beta and now! Do update how you go! (I’ve shared that people have written comments here about Junk-Store, with Eben the dev (hi Eben), so I know he’ll be lurking here)

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you! So much! This is really helpful for reading through :)

Next time will be far prettier then, I pinkie-swear!!!

I love finding other GOG fans! They’re my absolute number one, and that tended to be my focus. I’ll keep it in mind that especially here, there’s more of us!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I promise I will be!

My only issue is somehow keeping it formatted nicely (I miss peppering these with pretty pictures and GIFs), and being able to stop!!!

And you should try both! They’re very easy to install, and I absolutely swear by RetroDECK

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Oh my Gosh the Steam Deck has been by far my fav gaming purchase. I was the same, rarely playing anything, looking for something new, but the convenience of this thing changed everything for me.

I adore how it plays to two strengths: for those who want a simple console-like experience, it works right away! And for those who want to tinker (me) - the sky is the limit!!

Look for my friend’s work if you decide to buy one, he makes something called Decky Loader. From there the customization is endless!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Make sure you check for a ‘Xenia compatilibility list’

This is a spreadsheet showing whether any particular games are working, and how well they work. Some don’t play at all, and some play perfectly!

I have 5 PS3 games installed on my Steam Deck, through RetroDECK right now that play perfectly, and a couple that required tweaks!

I do remember that Xenia (the 360 emulator!) plays Skate 3 perfectly, though!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

This is so sweet of you to say!

Really, this is fun for me. Its going to take all my resolve to not do this again in 24 hours (because, over saturation!), it just makes me happy to find what interests me.

I’m lucky to have found a place like this community, where it just so happens others find that same stuff (so far!) just as interesting!

Thanks for this, made me smile!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Check the link in my post, it links you to Russ (Retro Game Corps) new video on it, and he will detail how!

Or, I also write about it in a guide I made last year, here:

rentry.org/steamdeckpirates-retrodeck_guide

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you!!!

I’m still cross (not really tho) that when I reached out to you all last year, you never wanted me to interview you!!!

RetroDECK has been my one true emulation love for so long now, and I’ve adored all your recent updates. You should all be so proud! I went into a little more detail for the users here on RetroDECK on my latest news post here on Lemmy too!

<3

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I missed you too!!!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I really enjoyed playing the first one on a flight, on my Steam Deck. So I’m hoping this next will play just as well!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Of the first? Yes! Its incredible. They did such a good job keeping the original game there with lovely new textures.

I haven’t the nostalgia of playing the original at release (or ever), but I really enjoyed System Shock Remake. You won’t regret it! It goes pretty cheap quite regularly on GOG, also

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Let us know how you find it! I’d love to hear what you think, after such a long time between play-throughs!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I feel so heartbroken that I never got a sequel to Prey

Emulating PS2 for my Steam Deck, would love any recommendations! (lemmy.world) angielski

I’ve been sinking further and further into the RetroDECK time-sink of setting up my emulators just so, and having the most fun doing so. The PS2 is a largely unknown system to me, I neither had one nor spent much time before now playing through some titles....

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you, Timesplitters looks lovely! The art-design of it looks just perfect!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

And I’m a total wuss, too. But after becoming so enamored with the REmakes, I went searching for games to scare me!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

…from what I’ve read and seen in the past, that game can be rather risky on one’s thumbsticks due to all the efforts in making yourself look as amazing as possible.

(sounds worth it, tbh, thanks!)

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

HEY THAT’S AMAZING!!!

Must be sad to be so in love with a game which seems to be mostly forgotten, but I love her shrine :)

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

For the plethora of HD textures I’ve found. I know it seems ironic, because of native PC resolutions, but fans have taken texture replacements to a whole other level with these. I just tend to try them out and compare them to the PC version. This was one of the few I found made a significant difference, at least in my eyes.

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you!!!

I’d be pretty tempted by Tony Hawk’s, but the recent news that 3+4 will finally be getting remade makes me hesitate to play. Since the experience will probably be better there!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what this image is from! PCSX2 via the configurator. I use RetroDECK on my Steam Deck.

It runs perfectly! Absolutely perfect. I also use some HD texture packs, replacing the vanilla textures to make it look extra fancy :)

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

It’s perfect!

Performance is tied to framerate, or at least was a loooong time ago. I notice a lot of users on EmuDeck write about this. Like…a lot! Not your issue, but I read a lot who think the game is playing in super slo-mo, but this is all tied to the framerate. Keep it at 60 Hz or above, and all is fine.

PCSX2 has a huge range of tweaks you can make, but there’s also HD texture ‘packs’ you can download and apply, which re-do all the textures (yeah, I know you guessed that). Some of these can be huge like Silent Hill 2’s coming in at 29GB, and some can be teeny-tiny like MGS2’s which only re-textures the HUD and menu (because PCSX2 can upscale the native game’s resolution well enough on its own!)

Long reply, for me to say it performs perfectly for me!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Hmmm, maybe you should try your resolution and texture settings, I’ve had not one issue playing games, no slowdowns for me.

But, never say never!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

As a purely Linux user, I’m just glad Heroic is around so I have options to play with less problems. Heck, they even have an agreement with GOG themselves where they get a proceed of the purchases made on GOG through a special link, or via Heroic.

GOG has its issues, but as someone dedicated to DRM-free games, and games preservation, they are still my favorite lot to buy games from!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I do so wish the GOGdb site acted in the same way as the Steam one did:

www.gogdb.org

Instead, it runs in a different way making it far less helpful than, as you said, SteamDB!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I’m the exception to gaming, I have maybe 20-ish games on Steam, but '000’s on GOG. I’ve always had a thing for the underdog, maybe that’s what made me focus on them from the start. I just love their platform, and their ethos. They’ll never be a competitor to Steam or Epic Games, but I don’t think they’re trying to be any more.

I just love them!

PerfectDark, (edited )
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Announcing they’d have native Linux support with a launcher and then never mentioning it again, hoping that everyone would forget?

That feels pretty awful to me, a Linux user. Obviously negated since we have such lovely work as Heroic (the dev of which is a personal friend), but it is the odd strange misstep like this which strikes me as being pretty sad.

Then we have developers never updating their games on GOG. Admittedly not a GOG problem, per se, but they could pressure these developers so that this kind of issue wouldn’t persist. There are SO many games which do this, that the GOG forums have a dedicated thread for this very issue: www.gog.com/forum/general/…/page316/?search=secon…At the moment, there are 4,729 replies on that thread.

GOG Galaxy 2.0 is nigh-on-abandoned now, with constant problems. There’s a slew of posts about it on all Reddit, their forum and on social media.

They have their issues. I adore them, but they have their issues.

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I found it the first RPG-ish I have spammed skip on the dialogue. Which felt odd to me, since I always sink into a RPG (even if this is a action game with RPG elements), but Avowed just felt a bit too surface-deep to me. It might not help that I booted up Kingdom Come Deliverance II around the same time…which reminded me of booting Phantom Liberty when Starfield came out.

It’s a good game, though. Solid, just not for me I think. I much preferred the writing, setting and mechanics (not to mention the atmosphere!) of The Outer Worlds.
