MrBobDobalina, do gaming w What EldenSoulsBorne boss gave you an embarrassing amount of trouble?

The first Headless I encountered in Sekiro. I was seeing enough progress and understanding what was being asked of me just enough to be stubborn as hell and kept trying to fight it head on, without having any knowledge yet of any helpful items that make the fight less rage-enducing.

Outside of Fromsoft, my NG+ encounter with the green swamp monster thing in Lies of P seemed SO much harder than the first time. So I’m not sure if this boss is considered easy or hard, but I didn’t consider it to be very hard going in for a second time and got quite stuck for a while…

MrBobDobalina, do gaming w Best Soulslike game for beginners?

Came to make the same recommendation. It depends on what aspect of the games you find intimidating. Most people recommending Elden Ring will likely be assuming that you mean mechanical difficulty, but in my case, the openness, variety, stat numbers etc of ER are all intimidating.

Sekiro is more approachable in this regard, the way forward is mostly clear, and the mechanics are clearly communicated, so you’re just left with practicing them until you’re good enough to progress.

I’d say that most people who say Sekiro is one of the hardest fromsoft games probably came from playing souls or Elden Ring and have the extra challenge of unlearning some of the foundations. I hadn’t played any, and though Sekiro is hard as hell sometimes, it clicked with me pretty quickly. Completed 3 endings and most of the optional, hardest content so far

MrBobDobalina, do gaming w The fantastic physics of the beamng drive

YES It was a Dodge Viper game, as in that was the only car available I think. And there was a button to either crush the car more or maybe launch it into the air? I’m pretty sure that’s how I managed to crumple it into a ball with wheels just like you. 15 to 20 years ago sounds right

Thanks again for your advice!

I’ve just beaten the scrapped watchman and I’m really enjoying it, and having the decisions streamlined by you is helping for sure. The only thing I’ve done differently is change the handle to the baton handle, as it’s a bit faster to deliver the charged hit (which is crucial when I’m going for stagger as often as I can).

Oh damn. I thought from some gameplay I’ve seen that perfect blocks also worked towards staggering an enemy? Which made me think of Sekiro, just not as pronounced / focused on

This is exactly what I was after, thank you! I will probably parry too much coming from Sekiro so the Strength route sounds good - is the Sweeper as viable as the Bastard all the way through (with motivity levelling)?

I think if I’d asked a similar question for BB I would have loved it, but I was stubborn and tried to learn all of it by myself. Instead I learned that I just want to be mastering a few mechanics rather than having open ended options to dozens

I’d suggest editing that in the main post for those who don’t know and don’t see this comment

MrBobDobalina, do gaming w Looking for games with unique core mechanics

This was what I was going to add. It’s basically just walking around and finding panels that have small 2d mazes on them, and solving the mazes. Sounds simple and honestly quite boring, but it quickly becomes far more special and ends up being so good.

Some of the solutions made me feel like my brain was folding in on itself before clicking into place

Ah yes, LttP… Obviously, I know what this means, but for others who don’t maybe you could elaborate?

MrBobDobalina, do gaming w What's the funniest game you've played?

Both of the Psychonauts games had such great writing, comedy is best when interwoven with actual substance and they nailed it

MrBobDobalina, do gaming w Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun?

Hahaha ummm yeah as for your last sentence, I finally got around to getting a diagnosis for adult adhd recently and yes, having that focus naturally demanded of your brain by something you actually enjoy doing is definitely soothing. Kinda explains all of the activities I’ve always been drawn to (intense games, sim racing, rock climbing, skydiving etc)

MrBobDobalina, do gaming w Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun?

Battle Royals - for me, it’s about how the consequences heighten the tension, and how the threat of getting unceremoniously smashed back to the lobby heightens the victories.

Playing with friends makes the the whole experience fun. If you drop and have some downtime ‘just’ gearing up, you can chat and hang out and goof around. Then when shit kicks off, it’s just so much more impactful (imo) than a game where you’ve just died and respawned a bunch already and you can do the same again. The teamwork and communication has to be next level and it feels so damn good to win a round, especially when you’ve been on the back foot and had to claw your way out of tough fights.

No mind tricks, not fussed about loot boxes and skins, just awesome memories from when we where playing enough to get almost half decent at it.

…and now I’m missing Apex Legends, might reinstall and remember that my friends don’t play it any more

MrBobDobalina, do gaming w Suggestions for smaller-y games if I liked _______

Ooh enjoy! Outer Wilds is one of my favourite things, ever.

Counter-point to ConstableJelly (they’re not wrong, play however you enjoy, this is just my opinion) - DO avoid guides even when stuck.

The whole game is about figuring things out, looking at the info you have from different angles, or heading out in brand new directions to see if any new discoveries will tie in with where you’re stuck. Looking something up will rob you of that discovery and maybe other ones that tie in to it.

There’s a great subreddit for the game that is set up with very specific rules to avoid spoilers. You can ask questions there, and people will expertly nudge you in the right direction based on what you’ve already discovered and figured out. There are communities here also but I don’t think they’re set up in quite the same way yet (especially as spoiler tags are not reliable in Lemmy yet across different apps etc)

You can definitely do it without resorting to any of the above, but if you get so stuck you’re going to drop the game, I’d say ask in that subreddit. Or, feel free to DM me! I’ll help you without ruining anything as best as I can.
