Goblin_Mode, do games w Baldur's Gate 3 has won Steam's 2023 GOTY Award

This is… A weird spread of awards…

Like BG3 winning GOTY and story rich makes total sense.

But RDR2 won labor of love? What? Lol. Have they been putting out massive updates lately or something?

Atomic heart won visual style… Sure? I mean I guess it’s atmospheric but I wouldn’t call it particularly stylized.

Lethal company getting better with friends is a solid pick

Hogwarts Legacy is best on deck? The fuck? Lol I suppose i haven’t played this one but I was under the impression the game was like… Fine? Kinda boring after a while but still playable? It’s not horribly offensive but how does a game like that win an award for being the most beloved steam deck game lol

STARFIELD WON FUCKING WHAT??? Okay, I was not as big a starfield hater as some. I thought it was boring as shit for sure but I don’t think it’s completely without merit on the whole… But Innovative? Fucking LOL! Starfield innovated exactly 0 things, hell it retroactively made things from 2011 seem new by comparison. I don’t think theres a single fresh idea in that entire game. Starfield winning most innovative game paints a very uncomfortable picture of the steam awards. There is CLEAR tampering going on here, either by bots vote spamming, or just a behind the curtain dealings with Bethesda. To be honest every single other award here feels tenuous at best just by Starfield winning that specific award. If that boring ass rehash of 2007 gameplay can be called the most innovative game on steam then I’m not sure I can trust any of these games actually got nominated by real players for any of their respective awards. What a fucking joke

Did you even read my initial comment?

I explicitly said that I have never been let down by a GTA campaign. What I was saying was that RDR2 is a different series that plays by different rules. For that reason I don’t feel like it’s necessarily fair to use RDR2 as an example of how they will treat GTA with the respect the series deserves.

I agree. It’s just that this is the same series… Idk maybe it will kick ass, I’m just overly cynical I guess lol

Knowing Rockstar put off development of this game for as long as they did just so they could milk GTAO for every last penny makes me hesitant at best.

I have never been let down by a GTA campaign, but they know where the money is, I’m hesitant to believe they will give this one the attention it deserves after seeing the profits from GTAO. Or maybe I’m just pessimistic

At the end of the day this is all subjective so far be it from me to claim objectivity. That being said I don’t think you could really classify a lot of that as “things to do”

Managing fleets is just about W keying in space until you see a frigate and buying a couple ships with high stats. But in my experience stats don’t even really matter because the missions are almost always a success anyway. Speaking of fleet missions they are imo the most mobile game-y “come back in 26 hours” passive resource thing imaginable. No interactivity, just press a button and come back later.

Managing the village was fun for the first I’m gonna say 2 hours. Now it’s just another passive resource that pays out every 24 hours and makes me do some combat every time I visit. That well is about 2 inches deep and produces just enough water for me to call it a feature.

Daily quests are very samey. A lot of fetch quests for miscellaneous doodads that basically boil down to "go to the same terrestrial bunker you’ve seen 100 times on 100 worlds, Kill some sentinels (or bugs), interact with console, Get some cryptic dialog, return to quest giver, receive dosh. Again, Kinda fun at first, gets boring as hell very quick.

Ship collecting is at least interesting in that the RNG and strategy mesh nicely. But without any way to customize your ship outside of just finding one that looks the way you want there’s nothing more to do with them besides look at them. There’s no real reason to have more than 1.

Listen I don’t think the game is particularly bad. I’d even say it’s an upper tier “podcast game”, hell I have 100+ hours in it over like 3 years myself. But let’s not kid ourselves and say it’s a great game. It’s a perfectly Passable time waster to keep your hands busy while you do something else like chat with friends or read an audiobook (see: “podcast game”)

just to make one of the powers you get later seem more useful

I want moder power to be useful so fucking bad dude. Last time I played I tried living on a little island that I terraformed into a small fort that rises out of the water, my only way to come or go with ore was by boat and I STILL never used it.

Despite being in literally the most optimal use case for having it that power just feels so lack luster. It would be wayyyyy better if it was just like a passive effect that made RNG better or half cool down or something. As it is I’d rather just use bonemass or Deer since they are more universally applicable
