FYI, the “O” in “GOG” is capitalized; it stands for “Good Old Games” as they originally made their claim to fame by modernizing access to literally old DOS, etc. games that are hard to run onodern PCs. It doesn’t stand for “of.”

With that said, yes, GOG should absolutely be prioritized, as well as itch.io.

If OoT could be made to look as good as TotK, that’d be something!

Vagante’s negative reviews criticize its too-numerous insta-death traps. What would your reply be to that?

I think you might love Noita!

FTL!!! And yeah, PP is awesome and so unique!

Slice & Dice is the best dice-building roguelite ever and has a free demo that is only content-limited and allows you to already play an infinite amount of runs. I literally played the demo as much as a paid game for a month until I bit down—so hard that, once, when I had my phone in hand and intended to take a shower, I ended up crouching on the bathroom floor furthering a run for an hour before finally pausing to return to the real world.

Clone Drone in the Danger Zone offers awesome online co-op. Noita’s world is just endless (people are still discovering new spell permutations years later). I will never turn down someone’s offer or request to watch a run of FTL: Faster Than Light.

The AAA world is not impressive to me at all, and if anything gets deprioritized in my book; graphics or a third-person view do not a fantastic game make.

I really hope the sequel does more with dungeons than just ricochet/geometry puzzles. CrossCode’s incessant use of those in dungeon after dungeon was what made me stop playing.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Too bad the developer duo basically disappeared… I had an idea for a 2-player sequel but they never responded.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Cave Story is undoubtedly the greatest Metroidvania made to date of which I know.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Hmm… May I watch you stream Vagante sometime? I’ve been iffy over it for a year or more now because of those reviews. Let me see how you die LOL jk. This is also coming from a SoR fan, too!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Not sure what “VRP” is unless you just mean ricochet puzzles, but mind you, I did play 95% of the game. It felt just too same-y after long enough (it was the plot and environment that had kept me going), and then I just gave up and finished through some YouTuber’s play-through and I confirmed that I had apparently quit at the start of the final dungeon, because it just felt like… more of the same timing-&-angling annoyances with no more originality. Zelda was far, far more creative and I think the game just could have done more with items or different weapons, or something, though I know much of it is based on your character being a specific class that was fixed pre-game… It just ultimately wore me down, sadly.

Right: *successor, not “sequel.”

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Oh. It’s been literal years so I totally forgot that initialism, but while we’re at it, the second “C” in “CrossCode” is also capital.

It’s smooth as butter, yeah, but I think I would prefer a game focused on a different character class/weapon. I remember some progression of concepts but I guess didn’t really connect the dots (even though I don’t think I looked up a guide more than once or twice briefly).

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

I tried a bit of Aquaria but couldn’t get into it… Thanks for the Gato recommendation. I didn’t know it was CS-like.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

And it’s not that short; the island to me seems to be an actual mile wide in circumference. There’s lots to do in the one environment.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy (after applying community bugfix mods) is better; with ZRP, Shadow of Chernobyl was bug-free except for the ending.

Then again, I played the original biggest known as Metro 2033, not the Redux ver. I still think there is more interesting stuff in S.T.A.L.K.E.R., though, overall. The environment is incredible in its natural, unscripted interactions and not… manufactured.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Sure, but I’m still talking about overall bugs, quality, and presentation.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

That’s called “arcade,” basically.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

It had a giveaway on Android, and I think iOS, 5 years ago. It’s certainly one of the most creative minimalist games out there, but I just couldn’t figure out how to get up to higher scores.

What are some old games that are hard to revisit, because a more modern and superior version exists? angielski

I tried playing Harvest Moon on the SNES today and having played Stardew Valley for hours, I thought I'd try and see how tolerable the original Harvest Moon was in comparison. I know and understand it is unfair because there's a 20 year gap between Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, while also discrediting Harvest Moon's later...

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

This is ironic because I loved Prey but couldn’t finish SS2’s tutorial!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

The first is getting remade?! Thank heavens! The combat system was absolutely atrocious!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

That’s not quite the same, though; bullet heaven ≠ twin-stick shooter.

Best game ever? angielski

Yeah pacman and pong were seminal but so was elite on the BBC, and Populous which I think was on the spectrum. Also unreal tournament, silent hill, vice city, homeworld, doom 2016, beam ng, I enjoyed em all but I can’t decide. Ppl here have done much more gaming than me, I’m wondering what you all think is the best game...

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Portal 2 was way better than Portal, which felt like mostly a really extended tech demo or proof-of-concept. Portal 2 felt like an actual, full, fleshed-out game.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar
Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Maybe Odd Realm?

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Wait, what makes it passive-aggressive? I didn’t interpret the title to sound as anything other than fully positive.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

I’m gonna say it.

I’m gonna say it.

Slice & Dice is better than Slay the Spire (not by much, to be fair, but… yeah).

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Did you try it on Hard?

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

No problem; I’ll play it more for you!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

That’s a big deal; I wouldn’t think much of the game if I had only played it on Easy the entire time. It really shines in Hard or Unfair!

Your all-time favorite game? Let's discuss the best options! angielski

I feel like my “all-time favorite” changes depending on my mood, but if I had to pick just one, I’d probably go with The Witcher 3. That game just hit all the right notes—amazing story, incredible world-building, and so much stuff to do without feeling like pointless filler. Plus, the expansions were just as good, if not...

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Portal felt like a very long, pretty well-done tech demo, but Portal 2 is where it’s at.

Amazon design vet can't shake desire to create art and music, so he left to build a new VR experience (www.geekwire.com) angielski

Bad writing or AI slop?

@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

the game makes it seem like sci-fi writers

What? No, it’s just Mio. Still, the dialogue is somewhat tropey; I hope it stays ultimately better than ITT.

Update: Okay, wow, it got way better once the characters really start opening up about their personal life struggles.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Same here, acquired through Epic Games’ giveaways. That was so bizarre to watch, haha: Dr. Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience / Secret Mission // CONTROL

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Hmm… Special Containment Procedures? What other games are good in this sub-genre?

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Ooh, yes, the new Prey was a terrifying, incredible title! It’s almost too much for me to bear replaying, even, though it was incredibly gripping and is amazingly well-done.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

You didn’t like Prey?!?! Did you maybe take it at too hard of a difficulty? It was incredible!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Oh, I was referring to the second one, yeah.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

It has perfect review scores so it must be way better than ITT, which, I agree, ended horribly, as if maybe they were rushed or out of budget by the end or something. I look forward to SF way more.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

ITT’s ending was extremely disappointing and some of the writing felt artificial or plot-forced, like not how the characters would behave based on how their values were developed earlier. It doesn’t seem like SF has this problem.

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

To clarify, are you talking about Remnant 1 or 2? Which one is better?

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Good to know! I played through most of the first, which I felt like I was ultimately tolerating…

Liked Slay the Spire? Slice & Dice is the best dice-building roguelite to date (tann.fun) angielski

I can’t believe I slept on this title for so long given how it has a free demo. As a Slay the Spire fan who has also played Monster Train, Indies’ Lies, Pirates Outlaws, Dawncaster, and a bit of Dicey Dungeons, I was utterly and immediately gripped. It is so well-done with a snappy, responsive UI and turn action, and it’s...

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Dang! On Hard?

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Oh, what, Blursed is a difficulty level? I didn’t realize you were citing something specifically from the game, haha. I’ve still just been playing the demo so far (there’s already so much in it), so maybe it lacks that!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Geez, this is the greatest dice-building game since… hmm, what was the first one?

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Sorry to read about your family member’s situation!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Geez, I delayed tonight’s shower by literally crouching on the bathroom floor for, like, almost 3 hours playing through a couple of modes in the full game (beat Raid on Hard on my first time and then continued Random); I finally caved and bought this on the Play Store instead of anything in Steam’s spring sale, ironically, and have no regrets lol. The only other game that gripped me this much in the past 12 years was FTL: Faster Than Light. I gotta pull myself away from this thing, lol!

Flagstaff,
@Flagstaff@programming.dev avatar

Okay, I’m back to tell you that this at normal price is greater than any Steam Spring Sale discount. I’ve been having such a blast with the full version and negative regrets: https://programming.dev/pictrs/image/483a58c4-6791-424e-94ba-c8875491b2a5.png
