Faydaikin, do gaming w You can play Starfield on PC and Xbox even if you only buy it once

That’s cool. Although I don’t know about “deal.” It’s a subscription for access to a home-arcade in essence. You stop paying and everything goes.

But alas, it is not for me to jugde. I’m not as big a fan of the whole ‘Games as a Service’ concept.

Less ‘Skyrim in Space,’ more ‘Fallout 4 in Space.’ They are really leaning into the “Build Your Own Trash-Fort” aspect, as with Starfield, you not only build them on every planet. You get to ride around in them between planets.

I get that ‘Builder Games’ are big money, but dear lord…

Without actually remembering anything too well, I do believe marketing around Morrowind was mostly graphics related. It was Beth’ switching to full on 3D and Morrowind was pretty advanced in that regard.

I mean, the screenshots in the magazins sold themselves to anyone with the mind for fantasy. Hell, it’s still the most beautiful and alien world to come out of Bethesda to date.

Sadly, nothing good remains that way forever. The structure and terms of Gamepass will eventually change to something less optimal.

Right now, the focus is to draw in people and create a “loyal” userbase.

Once they’re content with the state of the userbase, they’ll start restricting access and features to make people pay extra for different “premiums” and it’ll slowly go to shit.

It is ‘the way’ of mega-corporations.

Faydaikin, do gaming w What game mechanics do you love and hate?

I mostly dislike open-world games because of the lazy travel systems. Either you have to run everywhere or you free fast-travel from any point, too any point.

There is no middelground.

I miss games like Morrowind, where you not only had to pay for fast-travel, but it functioned more like an actual transportation system. Like, you had to go to this city and take a Strider to that town and then a boat ride to get to your destination.

Giving the world some infrastructur and natural money drainers helps with immersion and facilitates the need to go do some side-quests every now then. You get fast-travel, but you also get to see the world that was build for you. And you don’t run around as the richest douche in the world by level 10 with the best gear available because nothing costs anything.

Bethesda skipped this aspect entirely back in Oblivion and never looked back. Making your characters golden gods from the get-go, with no reason to interact with anyone or do anything except screwing around and collecting trinkets.

There’s more to it, ofcause, but this is the biggest pet-peeve I have.

Faydaikin, do gaming w What are your favorite video games that force you to pull out the pen and paper?
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

Wasteland 2.

There’s a couple of places that need passcodes and figuring out riddles. Sometimes you team is smart enough to remember them, other times not so much.

It also comes in handy with Dialog Options when no one in your team has ‘talking’ as a primary stat. You can still punch in the triggering word manually.

You’re basically the sixth member of the team if you can remember all that stuff. It’s neat little feature. Pen and paper absolutely required.

Oh, sure. But I have a sneaking suspicion you still need both Battle Net and Steam installed and running for it to work.

Kinda like GOG Galaxy works with both Steam and EGS. It can manage all your other launchers, but they need to be running.

If you don’t mind OW’s new monetization model, that’s fine and all, but Bing?!

Why would you do that to yourself?

I highly doubt Battle net will be removed.

Like so many titles before it, it’s likely you’ll just get to launch Battle net from Steam now.

So, no reason to uninstall anything. Or install anything for that matter.

I do have a firm policy regarding games that are and were exclusives. I don’t buy them even if they eventually come to my neck of the woods.

If they didn’t want my money then, they aren’t getting a dime now. Pretty simple.

But as I said, neither game really had any interest to begin with. So there’s a good chance I wouldn’t have picked them up anyway.

Not really my type of games, so… They can keep 'em.

Although I am quite against all that exclusivity silliness.

Faydaikin, do gaming w Where are all the good stealth games?

‘Metro 2033 Redux’ and ‘Metro: Last Light Redux’ are my favorite stealth games.

Good atmosphere and setting.

Indeed. I just ran through what I had on GOG.

GOG’s version works for me straight out of the box. Other than that, there’s the High-Res patch and the general Patch. They are quite important on modern machines.

If you play on Windows, make sure both patches are installed. Then screw around with the High-Res patcher a bit, hopefully you can find the right setting. It will probably take a few attempts.

If you play on Linux, I sadly can’t help you as I never got Fallout to work in it. :/
