Kit, w Why North America Can't Build Nice Apartments (because of one rule)

I don’t want to watch a video. Is there a written version?

gibmiser,

Fuck.click.bait

blu,

is this clickbait

Habahnow,

No idea, but the rule is a 2 staircase requirement. All building 2 floors and higher in most of Canada and US must require 2 staircases which means that they take up more room in a building and limit the possible room configurations in the building as well. The reason for 2 staircases is because of the increased fire hazards US and Canadian homes faced due to using wood for home construction unlike in Europe where extremely fire resistant materials are used. The host indicates that fire deaths have dropped significantly because of fire retardant technology throughout US and Canadian homes that makes the 2 story rule pointless for home less than 6 stories tall.

atro_city, w Are Taiwan's Roads Still a "Living Hell"?

Verdict: in many places yes. In places with money: less so. Not too surprising, but definitely better than the US.

4am,
@4am@lemmy.world avatar

Better than the US? wtf do you mean we don’t have taxis driving on sidewalks or motorcycles speeding down the wrong side of split avenues.

Nouveau_Burnswick,

So you don’t have taxis driving on sidewalks or motorcycles speeding down the wrong side of split avenues and you STILL have about the same road deaths and injuries per pop as Taiwan?

(12.1/100k Taiwan 12.6/100k USA)

Kaboom,

A lot more miles than Taiwan

Nouveau_Burnswick,

And? Highway miles should have even less interaction with pedestrians.

atro_city,

T0RB1T, w Please recommend a middle- to high-end hydraulic disc brake set with a Flat-mount caliper
@T0RB1T@lemmy.ca avatar

To ensure compatibility, you said you had a local bike shop… you should probably go there and get your brakes swapped with whatever you’re excited for, that they can order in.

Plus, support local, of course.

nasko,
@nasko@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, that’s the first thing I did - ask them for a swap. They:

  • Only offer post-mount calipers
  • Wouldn’t suggest a swap to me, because I bought the Sirrus 3 from them and it is still under warranty.

Their stance is basically - ‘If you come back with a brake set, we’d swap it for you, but we can’t suggest a replacement’

T0RB1T,
@T0RB1T@lemmy.ca avatar

Well, I’m sorry to hear that, that’s kinda wild. I’m not a mechanic, and not deep enough into bikes to tell you what to get.

I’m sorry for wasting your time.

nasko, (edited )
@nasko@lemmy.world avatar

Not at all, mate! Honestly - it’s not like I’m getting an influx of comments that I’d have a hard time keeping up with. :-) Thank you for jumping in.

GreatBlueHeron, w Please recommend a middle- to high-end hydraulic disc brake set with a Flat-mount caliper

When I was shopping for brakes, years ago, lots of told me SLX has all the quality/power of XT or XTR but they’re a tiny bit heavier and don’t have the prestigious badge. I went with SLX and have been very happy.

Tovervlag, w Europe jumps on the train

This only goes decently for cities. Plus in the Netherlands prices have been going up and up and up. It’s not fun anymore and it’s cheaper to take the car.
