With the release of “The Final Shape,” the main storyline has concluded, and it seems like the developers are now just churning out random content and seasonal passes without a clear direction for the game’s future. I’m genuinely curious about what motivates players to stick around. Are there aspects of the game that...
Kids man… I remember back in the day being asked to review a gaming site a young’un was trying to get off the ground and I had to correct them that Mario was NOT created by Atari and man, they were ADAMANT.
Destiny 2 has the bones of a decent game in there somewhere, it’s just that the devs keep fucking it up.
If it were me, I’d fix it like this:
Split it into 2 games. Story based PvE with paid content, F2P PvP with all the cosmetics, paid currency bullshit.
Allow characters to transfer back and forth at will, but each can be played without the other. Balance weapons independently in both games, so changing a gun for PvE doesn’t fuck up PvP and vice versa.
Restore all the story content removed from PvE. Allow each story mission to be picked from the map like D1 STILL does, and have level markers on them so people can experience the story in logical order.
“Just yesterday, it was alleged that Bungie’s CEO Pete Parsons had purchased 24 cars cumulatively valued at $2.5m just before the layoffs. Parson’s Twitter account went private yesterday, too.”
“Console sales are down. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella marked a 26% decline in spending on current-generation consoles this April compared to last April.”
We’re 4 years into the generation, sales declines aren’t uncommon, but this gen has had unique challenges:
Covid fucked it all up. Supply chain issues screwed availability, software engineering ganked game development.
Too much emphasis on “Cross Gen”. Why would someone scramble to get a hard to find PS5 or Xbox Series when the same game is out on PS4/Xbox One X?
Long generations are kind of the new thing, starting with Xbox 360/PS3. Previously they were around 5 years and people are looking for the next machines now.
I picked up a Steam Deck to get into PC gaming and frankly, I don’t get it. So many games not even worth the bandwidth to download much less actually play.
“Historically, the console version comes first, so lets take things one at a time. Get the console version out the door, deal with any bugs that arise, maybe an expansion or two, then we’ll announce the PC port, not before.”
“He attended Harvard University in the early 1980s but dropped out to join Microsoft, where he helped create the first versions of the Windows operating system. He and another employee, Mike Harrington, left Microsoft in 1996 to found Valve, and funded the development of their first game, Half-Life (1998). Harrington left in 2000.”
With the Milwaukee, you hold a button and flick your wrist to open/ close it. makes it easy to use with one hand. any knives with a regular blade that do this? thanks...
When a new generation starts, I hook it up in the living room, move the previous gen to the bedroom, and mothball the oldest gen.
So when I kick off, my kid, or grand kids, are going to discover organized boxes of gaming gear. I’m sure it will be all over whatever passes for social media then. :)
Currently:
Living Room - PS5, Xbox Series X, Steam Deck Dock.
You would think, right? But HiFi Rush was lauded as one of the best games last year and was highly successful, even being ported to PS5 and Switch at this point, so why close them?
It is undeniable that the dreamcast was a solid machine that had good games and a sleek look, but was ultimately overshadowed by the goliath that is the PS2....
Sega was a victim of the Dreamcasts success. They lost money on every console sold, didn’t make it back on the software, and spent too much money on things like Shen Mue.
The 32X was a disaster and it was bred from a conflict between Sega USA and Sega Japan.
In the US, the Sega CD had been a HIT. Japan wanted to drop it, US said “we’ll take it!” and it ended up being the #1 peripheral with more games for it than any other console add on ever. Over 200 games.
So when Sega Japan wanted to get the Saturn rolling, Sega US demanded a stop gap between the Genesis and Saturn. Japan resisted, and US went “Yeah, well look at Sega CD, what do you know?” and went with the 32X.
From the start, Japan wasn’t interested, did everything to ignore the product and effectively killed it.
In retaliation, US chose to launch Saturn several months too early. I think they knew going head to head with the Playstation was a death sentence, so they dropped it 5 months early to “select retailers”.
This had 2 problems:
The games were janky and not ready. The first version of Virtua Fighter was so bad they had to later issue a re-mix version for free.
The “non-select” retailers were pissed to be cut out of the early launch. So when the wide release happened in the fall, they leaned in more to support the Playstation than the Saturn.
People tend to lump in the Sega CD with the failed systems, but it was actually the most successful console add on ever, supporting over 200 games.
This was part of the problem with the 32X. Sega USA ran with the CD and turned it into a success when Sega Japan didn’t want it. When Japan was prepping for Saturn, US demanded the 32X and when Japan said “no”, US said “yeah, well, look at Sega CD, what do you know?” Sega USA arrogance willed the 32X into existance and, well, you know the rest.
Guitar Hero sold more, but how many games USE the guitar? 4? 5?
So what happened was, they sold the base game for $60, then had multiple paid expansions over time.
A few years in, Bungie decided to start “Vaulting” content, literally removing it from the game. This included all of the original story based missions, 1/2 of the planetary destinations, the first two expansions, and all their associated missions, strikes, raids, etc. etc.
Just gone. Not in the game anymore.
The stated reason was that it was too much for new players to download, but then new players came in going “I don’t know where to start. What do I do?” because all the story based progression had been removed.
They have since changed their mind on vaulting MORE content, but at the same time, they haven’t restored anything either.
