If you don’t know how to use one, make sure you put masking tape on the edge until you’re comfortable with it.

You can buy dull trainers too.

“meaning the other 59 million must still be using the PlayStation 4.”

That’s not what that means.

As of last December there were still 2 million active PS3 users.

playstationlifestyle.net/…/ps3-monthly-active-use…

I’d imagine there’s still a limited number of PS Vita and PSTV accounts too.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

And it’s still out selling the Xbox…

I don’t think PSN applied to the PS2, started with the PS3.

When a new generation starts, I hook it up in the living room, move the previous gen to the bedroom, and mothball the oldest gen.

So when I kick off, my kid, or grand kids, are going to discover organized boxes of gaming gear. I’m sure it will be all over whatever passes for social media then. :)

Currently:

Living Room - PS5, Xbox Series X, Steam Deck Dock.

Bedroom - PS4, Xbox One X, Switch.

I’ve been saying this for years now ever since they pulled out of Gamescom and just let Sony have Europe.

When was that? 2016?

eurogamer.net/microsoft-opts-out-of-xbox-gamescom…

Or even before that… 2012, bailing on BOTH Gamescom AND Tokyo Game Show:

You would think, right? But HiFi Rush was lauded as one of the best games last year and was highly successful, even being ported to PS5 and Switch at this point, so why close them?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Last year too when the stand out game was Hi Fi Rush for $30.

Nintendo really doesn’t know how the Internet works, do they?

Wait, it was a series? I didn’t know there was more than the 1st game…

Sega was a victim of the Dreamcasts success. They lost money on every console sold, didn’t make it back on the software, and spent too much money on things like Shen Mue.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The 32X was a disaster and it was bred from a conflict between Sega USA and Sega Japan.

In the US, the Sega CD had been a HIT. Japan wanted to drop it, US said “we’ll take it!” and it ended up being the #1 peripheral with more games for it than any other console add on ever. Over 200 games.

So when Sega Japan wanted to get the Saturn rolling, Sega US demanded a stop gap between the Genesis and Saturn. Japan resisted, and US went “Yeah, well look at Sega CD, what do you know?” and went with the 32X.

From the start, Japan wasn’t interested, did everything to ignore the product and effectively killed it.

In retaliation, US chose to launch Saturn several months too early. I think they knew going head to head with the Playstation was a death sentence, so they dropped it 5 months early to “select retailers”.

This had 2 problems:

  1. The games were janky and not ready. The first version of Virtua Fighter was so bad they had to later issue a re-mix version for free.

youtu.be/ubJSL5GhSZU

  1. The “non-select” retailers were pissed to be cut out of the early launch. So when the wide release happened in the fall, they leaned in more to support the Playstation than the Saturn.
jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

People tend to lump in the Sega CD with the failed systems, but it was actually the most successful console add on ever, supporting over 200 games.

This was part of the problem with the 32X. Sega USA ran with the CD and turned it into a success when Sega Japan didn’t want it. When Japan was prepping for Saturn, US demanded the 32X and when Japan said “no”, US said “yeah, well, look at Sega CD, what do you know?” Sega USA arrogance willed the 32X into existance and, well, you know the rest.

Guitar Hero sold more, but how many games USE the guitar? 4? 5?

American here, what’s a “zero hour contract”?

You’re an employee but not guaranteed to work any hours at all?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

In America it’s called “Full Time” vs “Part Time”.

Full Time is generally 35 to 40 hours, benefits like sick pay, vacation pay, 401K, etc.

Anything under 35 is Part Time, no benefits. But you can still be guaranteed hours up to 35, generally 20.

I don’t know of anyone here who would take a 0 hour job, unless it were a “no show job”. But that’s a different deal. ;)

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/No-show_job

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll look into it!

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Starting in September, when college kids are supposed to be spending their money on tuition and books. ;)

We don’t have release dates for that window yet.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

This doesn’t even take into account things like Destiny 2 which had half of the paid content excised from the game.

Oh, it’s still “supported” and online, and playable… just with none of the content that makes it make sense.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

So what happened was, they sold the base game for $60, then had multiple paid expansions over time.

A few years in, Bungie decided to start “Vaulting” content, literally removing it from the game. This included all of the original story based missions, 1/2 of the planetary destinations, the first two expansions, and all their associated missions, strikes, raids, etc. etc.

Just gone. Not in the game anymore.

The stated reason was that it was too much for new players to download, but then new players came in going “I don’t know where to start. What do I do?” because all the story based progression had been removed.

They have since changed their mind on vaulting MORE content, but at the same time, they haven’t restored anything either.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, they removed 1/2 of the base game and the first few expansions.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The move to digital sales is killing their business model.

They can’t buy and re-sell used digital games.

Pre-orders on digital content can be done through the respective app stores.

Gamepass renders the buy, sell, re-buy consumer behavior irrelevant.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I was in the beta for Anthem and when I first joined in, I was expecting some kind of intro level.

Nope! Thrown to the wolves with other players who apparently had already done this a hundred times.

I’m still figuring out how to change weapons and the mission is 1/2 way over already.

Who, in your opinion, is the most annoying character in any game?

Personally, it’s Faith from Farcry 5 for me. Uninteresting dialog that can be summed up to “I was bullied once” and that’s it. Literally every other character is so much more interesting. Jacob gives you a sequence where you run through a gulag which he then uses against you, John tries to kill you and is openly hateful...

Yet…

For now everyone knows it’s the Dune Popcorn Bucket. ;)

A few years later… Eternal Darkness:

jordanlund,

The game actively messed with you. About 1/2 through it would pause and throw up a “Thank you for playing the demo! Look for the full game coming soon!” That sort of thing.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

It… really doesn’t look that good.

If you had told me this was, I dunno, Tekken 6 from 2007 I would have believed you.

FTA:

“Either extraterrestrial civilizations (ETCs) are incredibly rare (or non-existent), or they are deliberately avoiding contact with us (aka. the “Zoo Hypothesis“).”

There is a 3rd possibility - it may not be deliberate.

Our position in the Milky Way is really out on the ass-end of it. We are nowhere near galactic central. If our current understanding of slower than light travel is correct, it just may not be possible for other civilizations to reach us.

When it comes to communications, and our radio sweeps of the galaxy turning up nothing, well, we’re assuming any advanced civilization is still using radio transmissions.

Look at our recent experiment with laser based communication:

www.cnn.com/2023/12/18/world/…/index.html

100 or so years after radio communication was widespread, we have the technology to eliminate it. There may be other methods orders of magnitude beyond that. We could be awash in alien communication streams we just can’t percieve because ours are too primitive.

Disco Elysium - Switch or Xbox/PS5

As in the title - its on sale on all consoles at the moment for a very good price and I was wondering what console should I get it on. I like the idea of playing it on the go and I thought as it looks like it should run no difference what console im playing it. But I heard some mixed reviews regarding the performance on Switch.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I’m going to be the negative nancy on this one, because I had the same deal, super cheap price and I wanted something to play on my Steam Deck.

It LOOKS great. It PLAYS like shit. You navigate the world as a character who maybe got hit in the head too hard a few too many times. None of the dialog choices are good, they are all just varying degrees of “Stupid” to “Who hurt you?”

Some people get off on it, I couldn’t stand playing a character that fucking stupid. I asked around going “So… did I just roll the stats wrong? It’s not too late for me to re-start…”

No, it turns out, regardless of your stats, it really is just that badly written.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Is this the same game that was accused of faking the gameplay video or was that something else?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

When Destiny started, Bungie was tied to Activision and whenever there were design decisions people hated, they blamed Activision for them.

Then Destiny 2 launched, Bungie was able to buy out the Activision contract, and everything went to shit.

Turned out, Activision had been the voice of reason the whole time.

Bungie started eliminating story missions, vaulting content people had paid for, including a full 1/2 of the base game and multiple expansions. They sunset gears and weapons people spent hundreds of hours earning and curating because they claimed they didn’t know how to develop scenarios for them any more.

A full Sony takeover would be a huge improvement over what Bungie has done since separating from Activision.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

You and me both. I dropped the game cold when they vaulted the content. It was clear Bungie did not respect my time or my money.

Since then I saved $230… and it will be more since I won’t be buying Bungie content going forward.

Beyond Light - $50
Witch Queen - $80
Lightfall - $100

Gamestop gift card, or a gift card for another large gaming retailer like Target/Walmart/Best Buy.

Visa gift cards can be used at any retailer, but yeah, I’m not sure how that works for online stores like Xbox/PSN/Steam.

I should say too… SOME games are platform specific. So if they’re asking for the new Zelda game, that’s ONLY on the Switch. Makes it easier.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

FIFA and Madden have both been made for EVERYTHING, so, yeah, no easy way to run that down.

Go for a $140 gift card because new games are often hitting $70 each.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Remote play is an absolute godsend.

I figured it out on my Galaxy Tab A a few years ago, which required you to tether your controller. Then this past January, when I ruptured my Achilles Tendon, being able to run Xbox Series X, Playstation 5 AND Steam games from my Steam Deck in bed was HUGE!

That being said, I don’t see the need to buy another device to do what I’ve already been doing…

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Harry Potter was great as is… No need to change it.
