The improvements of steam and proton, steamlink and big picture mode make it possible to run great games on your TV. Its not „just turn on“ yet but we‘re getting there. I wanted a PS5 when they were unavailable but I since managed to play my favorite games on my tv with a ps4 controller and dont see the point to buy back into a locked up computer with a fancy case for games that have microstransactions gallore.

In any case, steam does provide a good product but it also uses anti competitive measures to stay on top of the market and is owned by a billionaire. There are no ethical billionaires, sorry.

I was referring to the very vocal crowd that can not ever accept steam being criticized for dominating the market and serving its billionaire owner, however „less bad“ he is. There are no ethical billionaires.

It could be viewed as a measure to get free games away from the main focus so valve can make more money.

The underlying issue here is that we are in this mess because our parents and grandparents didnt do this (enough). So yes, going against corporations is kind of my hobby.

I see your point. A reason why I brought this up is because valve does not see criticism for the things they also do wrong and especially on this platform, rarely does anyone look at them from a non favorable view. Thats not because they dont do wrong but because they are good at marketing and other gaming companies are a lot worse than them.

Billionaires are the cancer of this world and anti competitive actions have evidently been committed, if you like to hear it or not.

Whatever you‘re doing, you might wanna do less of it. Valve has been doing these kinds of things for a long time and anyone who understands markets knows that there is no monopoly without taking out the competition.

In any case, I know you wouldnt admit it if I presented you with rockhard evidence that they did it and thats okay. I‘m not doing this for you.

Just for clarity: how would it do a disservice to players if a dev can sell their steam keys for any price, no matter which platform?

Let me try and understand this by altering the product.

Valve now produces cars and the devs are people who make these cars inside factories. Same as is currently the case, these employees get cars cheaper and are asked to not undercut the seller by holding onto the cars for a certain amount of time before selling them used.

It does make sense for me to view it that way. One could argue that the couple cars that get sold by employees doesnt do anything to hurt the brand and that pressuring them to keep the price high manipulates the market.

Also, doesnt the work of steam accumulate to hosting mirrors of a game and hosting a large website they get billions in revenue for?

First of all, people sometimes use analogies that dont make sense to you. No need to be a dick about it. You could just make a better example.

Staying with cars, I see my mistake. Valve is not producing the cars in this example, valve is doing the car sales for the (small) manufacturer. They dont provide any part of the car, only the exposure and surrounding community. Its not nothing but has zero to do with the product.

What they are asking is „you can sell cars from our showroom, just dont sell them for cheaper than we do“. Which does make sense.

Playing steam games on the TV has become really good. I played through most of control over steamlink and besides my ps4 controler losing power too often - which has nothing to do with steam, it has been a blast.

Games that can be played with controller work great on the tv.

The issue is much bigger than this and much bigger than valve.

The underlying problem are nation state sized companies that are so vertically integrated that they profit from every step of the process they are involved in.

Through their huge size they have the power to profit on procurement, labor, production, sales, etc. compared to smaller companies. The concept of billion dollar companies (and individuals) is perverse.

The capitalist system was not designed to harbour companies that never make a loss and are sold or broken up just because they dont satisfy last quarter‘s predictions.

Everywhere where joe or jane average cant start a competing business (either through overzealous regulations like tiny banks or through monopoly inducing IP laws like the one allowing valve to infinitely hold games hostage) you will have overcharging, barely any progress in development and small numbers of people ridicolously raking in profits.

We need to get rid of the right to „sell“ limited licenses, billion dollar companies and shareholder primacy.

Important addition: the majority of people isnt equipped for this kind of game. Patience and ability to grasp this kind of thing is what makes the computer nerds the computer nerds.

Programming and sysadmin stuff isnt really popular either for that express reason.

Please make sure that they also refund you the interest on the money. Although preordering games is pretty lame imo, companies should be punished for going back on preorders, better yet have to make it work no holds barred.

Honestly, it think thats a really good idea. Proprietary consoles are a relict and its great if they go away and get replaced by open platforms like the steamdeck and steam machines (not necessarily affiliated with valve though).

Fully agree. I would even outlaw the walled garden concept completely. I would necessitate interconnecting APIs for everything. So that I can call apples app store over their api from any machine for example.

If someone comes up with an example that overburdens a company, they need to allow others to make such tools for free.

Also, i would outlaw any fee on things that cant be explained logically. Like apple tax for example.

Same obviously goes for consoles.

But obviously the people need cheap toys that break asap so they can buy new cheap toys and we need to produce, sell, transport and plan them.

I feel like we‘re not seeing/talking about the reason the console market is another duopoly. Its a harsh failure on cartel prevention laws imo. New consoles should pop up here and there yet they dont (very small opening for steamseck likes). Its not a healthy market.

At first glance I think the IP laws are the problem here. A new console should be able to run xbox games and/or ps5 games and compete on hardware and ergonomics alone imo. That way the competition would drive prices down and decisions would again be for improving the service, not the bottom line.

This is a rough post because neither did you provide alt text for these non mobile friendly pictures nor did you put any emphasis or mention what you actually are trying to say or ask.

From what I have gathered after readin through it, US citizens are being asked to waive their rights to class actions or any form of jury trial for any reason whatsoever.

This absolutely is reason to boycott them and make a giant fuss about it but I would ask that you or someone makes this a lot easier to grasp in like 15 seconds so peeps dont just scroll over it.

You very much need to be in the US for this (or another capitalist hellscape). Reason being that this is illegal in europe.

They need to do this. They choose to so they cant be sued for using dark patterns most likely.

I sincerely hope walled garden consoles all go the way of the dreamcast. We‘re seeing huge advantages in small set top box style computers with plug and play functionality.

The most important part is you actually own the device which means you can put any OS on it, write your own apps and customize and use it however you like for however long you want.
