echo64,

Yes, this was a founder complaining that they didn’t get paid or whatever their complaints were. The company was bought and owned so they can do whatever.

As usual, c level gets rich, workers get laid off.

echo64,

The thought process is that for many games, the majority of their revenue comes from these mechanics and from China. The games themselves will need to change to get revenue flowing. And new games won’t be made with this revenue source in general.

This is similar to how eu regulations can lead to global changes sometimes, China is a big enough market to affect things globally.

echo64,

I really don’t know what to say about the modern pcgamer, at least the terminally online one like this.

I don’t want to being whataboutism into this, but you likely support many companies that do truly terrible things every day, but this one is a bridge too far? This one? It’s wild.

echo64,

Eh, you always can. But that’s beside the point. The point I’m making is not that you don’t boycott other things, it’s that this is the only thing you choose to. Which is just a symptom of being online in toxic places waaaay too much. You just shouldn’t care this much about a mostly harmless video game company. It’s super weird.

It’s like when those weirdos keep voting EA as the worst company of the year every year, like EA? Really? Okay, that’s where your priorities are.

echo64,

Post made me wonder where the IP ended up, Eidos published the series and owned the IP, that went through SquareEnix after they bought out Eidos, then they sold the IP to Embracer who is currently going through a very slow bankruptcy.

So outside the thought exercise, this is mostly wishful thinking. The best we can hope at this point is that embracer sell their IPs to someone else who maybe publishers remasters?

From software probably aren’t a good choice though, they don’t really vibe super well with the more straightforward European mythologies, they like to weave more (intentionally) convoluted worlds that don’t super mesh well with the stories in the soul reaver series.

The closest I can think of would be the psvr exclusive Déraciné, which is a time travelljng story about faries in a boarding school, and it’s still pretty far.

echo64,

So, yeah. THQ Nordic is owned by the aformentioned Embracer. They got no money. Everything they have is currently being shut down and will likely all be sold off to pay the bills in the next year unless they pull a mega hit out of their behind

echo64,

I love Soul Revear and the cain series, but they weren’t even hits at their most popular ;) Embracer needs a huge injection of money just to keep going. huge

echo64,

Did you really just claim that journalists can not change the world by talking about issues?

echo64,

Yes, we have hundreds of years of examples of journalists changing the world by talking about things. It’s kind of what they do. It’s so wild to see someone make this claim really.

echo64,

If there is one thing Microsoft does not want or need, it’s QA. They have their own people.

Shareholders get richer from this buyout, and the workers get fired.

echo64,

Elder millennials and cooler gen x’s grew up on Goldeneye 64, y axis inverted

Baldur's Gate 3 'Isn't Going to be on Game Pass', Insists Larian Boss (www.ign.com) angielski

In a new interview with IGN, Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke responded to questions about Baldur's Gate 3 being on Xbox Game Pass, explaining why the best RPG of 2023 won't be on Microsoft's subscription service anytime soon.

echo64,

Whilst devaluing your sales for the next thing as now people say “ill wait for it to be free”

echo64,

This game seems like it’s flying under everyone’s radar. I get why, but I’m so hyped for it.

I can’t begin to explain how good those first two suikoden games are, and how in the sea of jrpgs we had at the time they managed to stand by themselves feeling completely unique.

echo64,

Tlou2 is a 2020 game… this is a bit of an over reaction don’t you think.

echo64,

It’s been three years. It’s 2023.

The answer is “Yes, that was a bit of an overreaction. The last few years have felt like a lot longer than that with the pandemic and everything!”

echo64,

Specially with how Sony has been dead set on having many live service games in its portfolio.

the previous CEO was dead set on that, but he’s gone

echo64,

I guess some people might be interested in that… fallout 4 is fine. I don’t need to replay it.

Maybe bring that rumored fallout 3 remake out

echo64,

I want to say this is good news but

The union said that the deal “commits ZeniMax to uses of AI that augment human ingenuity and capacities, to ensure that these tools enhance worker productivity, growth and satisfaction without causing workers harm.”

Under the terms of the deal, wherever ZeniMax rolls out AI in a way that impacts the work of union members, the company will provide advance notice to the union and negotiate its plans upon request.

Additionally, it lays out six “guiding principles” for AI’s use in the workplace, insisting the tech must be fair; reliable and safe; private and secure; inclusive; transparent; and accountable.

This all sounds like the job losses from AI replacing workers will go as planned, just slower.

Unions, in general, seem to be doing a rather naive job of protecting workers from ai across the board.

echo64,

Nah, just promote what you have. You don’t have to ‘over deliver’, for some reason hiding away the great stuff you made. Just don’t over hype.

echo64,

Which is actually extremely competitive for what it is, it’ll probably go up in price in a year

echo64,

Avoiding the reddit like pessimism and cynicism of the other comment…

This is an fpga recreation of the turbo duo. It’s capable of playing original pc engine, turbografix16 games, as well as cd games and the six (Six!) Super graphics games.

Why does fpga matter? It means the games run as close to as they were at launch, including the as close to zero lag as possible for a modern display (and actually zero ms lag when it has dac support).

If you don’t have any original tg/pce games, then this likely isn’t something you will care about. If you do, this is likely going to be the best way to play your game collection for the foreseeable.

echo64,

Are you mad that you sold a sword? That’s probably one of the worst reasons I’ve seen for “losing all desire” for something I assume you spent money on

echo64,

“not feeling it” is a different reason than “I’m mad that i sold a sword and can’t buy it back again”

echo64,

I know you are hung up on this, but people aren’t thinking of pc when they say that. It’s okay, the original poster just meant “locked to Microsoft systems”, so windows pc and Xbox. It’s okay.

echo64,

You’re excited by the thought of 500ish people losing a job because I guess you don’t like the angry birds? Okay.

echo64,

Tbh, sony needs to take over. Sony seem to do okay with their stuff, and Bungie leadership seems to be totally at fault.

They must have the most wild buyout contract for Sony to not be able to just swoop in and fix this nonsense.

echo64,

In addition, mods always end up in a situation where someone’s work was stolen, which no one cares about when it’s free. Everyone’s just using everyone else’s stuff because it’s all working to make a better ecosystem

That all changes when people get paid, justifiably

echo64,

This is the second time Bethesda has done this.

echo64,

Yes, I’m sure that will stop it

echo64,

so, it won’t.

reference: every single marketplace that lets anyone upload things that in some way drives revenue back, from app stores, to youtube, to music platforms.

echo64,

that’s not at all what is happening. Embracer spent ridiculous amounts of investor money to purchase every company they could. Embracer couldn’t raise more money this year and needs to pay wages, embracer literally can not afford to keep the lights on in these studios.

This is just a shit show.

echo64,

this is opening up patents, so yes, in a world like ours having something be patented, but royalty free and anyone can use is much better than the alternative. which is either one company owning it and licencing it. or a patent troll getting it and making it even worse.

the sarcasm in this case, is not warranted. this is a good thing.

echo64,

these things often do not exist yet, hence the patent

echo64,

this is on-top of all the lost sales from no one buying their first-party games.

Gamepass is not financially viable, it’s funded by microsoft office and azure. It never will be unless they get a huge majority of the market /and/ raise praises massively. Which is of course their goal as soon as they kill the concept of game ownership.

echo64,

because they are good. The Thing is one of my favourite films of all time, it’s a remake.

echo64,

I know they are probably bombarded with requests for comments and interviews, but CDPR have learnt nothing from CP2077.

they are going to over-sell this again, promising things that don’t materialize because they are dreaming of the thing now when it’s still 3-4 years away, then people are going to be disappointed when it releases and doesn’t have all the things they talk about.

Obviously consumers haven’t learnt anything either, we eat this up, but CDPR is going to get the fallout from it.

echo64,

I’m talking specifically of the over-promising and under-delivering on game design. not the technical issues which is a whole separate problem that may or may not be solved by UE5

echo64,

There’s no sudden new output.

Apples iOS privacy changes have killed a lot of the value in mobile markets, so many companies have been looking to diversify.

echo64,

Excited about renting it out to you a month at a time with an ever increasing cost

echo64,

Netflix a decade ago. Wow, this is so amazing. What a deal. How could it go wrong

Netflix today, okay, which subscription service to we get this month, I want to watch this show, but Sarah wants to watch that show and the other show we were watching got deleted from the service so we just can’t watch that one. If only we could learn from this situation

Gamepass is a “great deal” because Microsoft office pays for it.

echo64,

Yes, that makes the gamepass situation even more egregious. Everyone knows the cost of making games, but only Microsoft can afford to literally lose money for a decade to secure dominance.

No one can compete because everyone else has to run a real business

echo64,

Yes, we can all do that once the industry has been irrevocably changed forever, and now nothing gets made outside of subscription services

echo64,

You 15 years ago: What makes you think movies will only be available on subscription services? they make a lot of money selling things physically today, Netflix is just a side revenue, it won’t change anything.

despite how cheap these services have been, game sales have not dropped either.

aside from on xbox.

echo64,

“It’s a one-off game,” Yoshida tells me. “We’re asking players to pay the full price for this experience, and so we want an experience that’s going to equal the amount of money that players are going to be paying and we want them to have satisfaction equal to what they paid or even more than that.

“We have no idea if people are going to fall in love with Valisthea and fall in love with Clive’s story and want to see more of the world and more of its characters,” Yoshida says. “So while we always want to consider DLC or spinoffs or those types of things where you can learn more about the game, first we want to see if Valisthea and Clive are really things players around the world want to see more of and then make that decision.”

More like fuck modern gamer reading capability am I right? Literally the same interview. Read more than headlines. This is the same crap takes you see on reddit, and we should take the opportunity to do better here.

echo64,

“Our direction when what we wanted to was make sure players have a way to really be in the world and have an immersive way to travel through the world,” said Sasko. “This is designed to be a role-playing feature.”

echo64,

He has, but also square enix is very the left-hand doesn’t know what the right-hand is doing.

All I’m saying is that you can’t derive much from this aside from he isn’t working on anything to do with FFTactics

echo64,

Or the famously a mess of a company square enix, continued to be a mess. I’m not saying it is in development, I’m saying that we all still don’t know.
