argv_minus_one,

Who needs a wireless mouse when you’re sitting right in front of the computer it’s plugged into?

argv_minus_one,

With a console controller? Being barely able to aim isn’t my idea of easy. Mouse and keyboard, please.

argv_minus_one,

You might pay for a subscription-based future, but I will stay on PC where this sort of nonsense is not tolerated.

argv_minus_one,

It would also be unplayably slow. Bethesda games aren’t known for performance even without Denuvo slowing them down.

argv_minus_one,

Unless I’m mistaken, Denuvo constantly encrypts and decrypts everything in the process’ memory, including executable code, in order to conceal it. There is no way to do that without massive performance overhead.

argv_minus_one,

As is Bethesda tradition.

argv_minus_one,

Why would you want to play a Bethesda game 5 days early? The best time is several months after release, when the community has had time to fix the bugs.

argv_minus_one,

“Pirates? I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over the gazillion sales we’re about to make.” —Bethesda, probably

argv_minus_one,

Who the hell are they expecting is going to play this game? Only trust fund kids?

argv_minus_one,

Steam system requirements say RX5700 minimum. Recommended is RX6800XT, which was ludicrously expensive last I checked. Also I need a much newer CPU.

In this economy, that’s gonna be a no from me.

argv_minus_one,

Now imagine how fast they’d be without Denuvo.

argv_minus_one,

I’m an adult with a job, and I don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of affording the recommended system requirements for this game any time soon. RX6800XTs do not grow on trees.

argv_minus_one,

It costs four hundred thousand Red Bulls to crack this video game in twelve seconds.

argv_minus_one, (edited )

I feel like Bethesda wouldn’t use Denuvo at all, because it would break a lot of mods, and Bethesda games rely heavily on mods to be fun.

ETA: Also, Bethesda games tend to be appallingly slow even without Denuvo, let alone with it.

argv_minus_one,

Already been doing that for decades. flicks levitating silver PCMR hair

argv_minus_one,

Are Blizzard games worth cracking any more?

argv_minus_one,

I loved Fallout 4…once there were enough mods to fix everything that’s wrong with the vanilla game.

Which is par for the course with Bethesda. 🤷‍♂️

argv_minus_one,

Sadly, mods can and do remove the horrid dialog wheel thing, but they can’t add more interesting dialog options.

argv_minus_one,

Ludicrously profitable megacorporations demand more profit.

argv_minus_one,

Hold up. That entire image is 8-bit. It’s a JPEG image. JPEG can’t encode more than 8 bits per channel. Nor can most displays, including mine, display more than 8 bits per channel. And yet the left half of your image exhibits far worse banding than the right half.

The left half looks more like 5 bits per channel rather than 8. You’d see that kind of banding in gradients back in the days of Windows 3.1, when 16-bit color was common. (16-bit color uses 5 bits each for red and blue, and 6 bits for green.)

argv_minus_one,

One that’s not patent encumbered.

argv_minus_one,

Then it should be marked as such. It’s highly misleading to anyone who doesn’t know better. Again, you’re demonstrating the difference between 5-bit and 8-bit color, not the difference between 8-bit and 10-bit color.

argv_minus_one,

I’m just worried it’s going to be some Denuvo-encumbered, unmoddable, play-once-and-forget game.

argv_minus_one,

My sensei in Sheogorath, your DRM is the reason those games are being lost!

argv_minus_one,

I don’t know why I worry. Kids are practically immune to bullshit. It’s always adults who repeat their crooked leaders’ lies.

NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 | New Ray Reconstruction Enhances Ray Tracing with AI (www.youtube.com) angielski

AI is transforming the world, and NVIDIA’s Bryan Catanzaro is here to talk about how DLSS is getting even better with Ray Reconstruction technology. Through a new neural network, Ray Reconstruction works on all GeForce RTX GPUs to enhance the image quality of intensive ray-traced content....

argv_minus_one,

Upscaling is for consoles. I don’t care how fancy the algorithm is. Render every pixel!

argv_minus_one,

Cloud streaming is anti-consumer, so this won’t help Microsoft’s case unless the regulators are idiots.

argv_minus_one,

If you can’t otherwise afford them. Pretty important “if”. And then only until you can afford them.

argv_minus_one,

So, basically, G2A is a fence for stolen property? Why hasn’t it been shut down by law enforcement?

argv_minus_one,

Taking money for a 30-year-old movie is pretty much government-assisted stealing, if I’m honest. Copyright in the USA originally had a term of 14 years.

Private
argv_minus_one,

Inner Space. Unlikely to work very well on a non-Windows platform because of its unique game mechanic: the icons of other programs installed on the computer are the items you’re trying to collect in this game. You’d need a Windows environment populated with other apps for it to use, or write a program that gathers the icons of the apps on your real environment and generates stub executables for the game to find.

The GPU-specific versions of MechWarrior 2. That game originally used a software renderer, but many versions of it were made for specific GPUs (this was before Direct3D and OpenGL were available), and some of them looked quite good. Some of them can be played on modern hardware because there is a shim for the GPU they were designed for (most notably the 3Dfx version), but the others cannot be played any more.

argv_minus_one,

No, it’s not. That’s just the game DLL, not the engine.

argv_minus_one,

Assuming they didn’t imcompatibly change the engine.

argv_minus_one,

My partner is very tuned into the various ethical mishaps happening in the world and keeps me apprised of which companies are doing shitty stuff and which people/companies I should stop supporting.

Problem: the set of companies you shouldn’t support due to unethical behavior is pretty much all of them. As the saying goes, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. If doing business with someone with blood on their hands puts blood on your hands, then only the hands of hermits and children are clean.

This is one of the reasons why I use free and open source software wherever possible, but very few games are FOSS and most of them were commercial before being FOSSified (e.g. Doom).

argv_minus_one, (edited )

If I submit a comment, my real name will be attached to it and shown to the world in perpetuity. That doesn’t seem safe.

argv_minus_one, (edited )

So, let me get this straight. They want to peer into the homes and bedrooms of children all over the world? Gather photographs of them? 😬

And how do they expect this to work on a gaming PC with no camera?

Also, their comment form says not to submit any personally identifiable information, such as your name, and yet it requires you to submit your name, and it says your name will be shown publicly for all to see. To object to a violation of my privacy, I must…allow them to violate my privacy?

argv_minus_one,

Meanwhile in reality, the risk is a certainty and the benefits don’t exist.

argv_minus_one,

Sending a hard copy will still result in my real name being attached.

The last thing I need is to be harassed or worse by someone who thinks I’m a child abuser because I’m opposed to an initiative for “protecting” children. By submitting a comment, I’m putting myself on a list.

argv_minus_one,

Nope, that’s not gonna convince me to install Epic’s spyware. Nice try, though.

argv_minus_one,

You can operate without a BIOS if you implement a compatible one from scratch. That’s how IBM PC clones came to exist.

But an encryption key has to be exactly the same as the original, and although I doubt it can be copyrighted, it is definitely a technological protection measure per DMCA.

DMCA is a horrible law and needs to be gutted.

Neopets is promising a ‘new era’ with an improved website and fixed Flash games (www.theverge.com)

Neopets, the virtual pet website launched in 1999, is promising a “new era” with an improved website and fixed Flash games. They will launch a new unified website on July 20th to fix issues and bring back over 50 Flash games using the Ruffle emulator starting July 25th. A new Neopets mobile game called World of Neopets is...

argv_minus_one,

Deshittification?

Also, holy cow that still exists?

Also also, I wonder if I’ll be able to play Super Mario Bros Crossover again some day.

What did Microsoft do with Bethesda?

    argv_minus_one, (edited )

It’s ActiBlizz. You aren’t missing much.

As for Starfield, it’s a Bethesda game. Even if it weren’t exclusive to Microsoft platforms, you’d still be seriously missing out if you played it on anything other than PC. Bethesda games without mods, like sundaes without toppings, just aren’t complete.

    argv_minus_one,

No console has had superior hardware since 1992. The release of the IBM VGA and Gravis UltraSound sealed the superiority of the PC, a title it has held ever since.

    argv_minus_one,

Let’s be honest. Bethesda games have always been PC exclusives. All other platforms got an unfinished beta and PC got the real game.
