According to MetaCritic, Zelda: Breath of the Wild topped "best games of the 2010s" lists, appearing in 1st place in 17 of these lists. In 2030, what game of the 2020s decade will appear on the 1st place in most of these lists? (It should be noted that we are in the middle of the 2020s decade so this may change as new games get...
Botw was good, but I wouldn’t put it anywhere near game of the decade. Divinity 2, Subnautica, Skyrim and its DLC, Hollow Knight, Death Stranding, Doom 2016, HLA, Ori and the Blind Forest, as well as a number of smaller games and ones I’m probably forgetting.
Undead nightmarrrrre, fuck yes. I generally don’t like rockstar games these days, but undead nightmare was so fucking good. I might actually have to buy it
Single player games with a good story and fun replayability are what I’m after. Or co-op. Occasionally, a fun multiplayer with a risky, innovative design like Lethal Company.
If a game requires me to collect 100 goddamn feathers, or press X 20 times to “survive” a heavily scripted encounter, you are doing your game wrong. Look at Black Mesa, look at Subnatica. Look at the games that took risks like Lethal Company or Elite Dangerous. You don’t have to appeal to everyone. You have to tell a story well, and the gameplay should be unique and interesting. Larian understood that with Divinity 2, and made improvements to both story and gameplay in BG3.
Don’t forget the meta where a new paid DLC weapon is super unbalanced and great for two weeks until the devs nerf it into the ground and everyone goes back to the default weapons that are just ok.
So, I’ve been getting into GBA and want some recommendations. I’ve been playing advance wars and really like it, anyone know any similar games? (Not fire emblem because permadeath is an annoying mechanic?...
Eh. Not really interested unless I can play Halo 3 on my phone. And even then, the DRM on the MCC is so awful that it makes me constantly sign in on my steam deck.
Mobile gaming had it’s time in the sun with Plants Vs Zombies and Infinity Blade. It’s been downhill ever since with the rise of f2p gambling/lootcrate games. I don’t see mobile gaming ever coming back from that until regulations are much, much stronger.
Initial scrolling of the Steam Summer Sale seems pretty lackluster, but digging through the comments sections in other threads, a few gems have stood out, and it doesn’t appear we have a thread dedicated to this yet, so post what you think are the best deals here!...
It’s a completely different game vs undertale. It’s like comparing Dota 2 to DiRT rally, haha. It’s worth going in blind, and the post-game is extremely good and very replayable (and adds new content).
Curious about y’alls opinions on this. I like the idea of getting new people to experience an older game by aligning it to modern graphics and accessibility standards. But capitalizing on nostalgia with quick updates to that make it look modern rather than making new games seems like just more of studios trying to squeeze...
The only remakes that I really liked were Black Mesa and the MCC. Black Mesa was such an incredible tribute to Half Life.
Some, like The Witcher (1), could absolutely use an overhaul because of bad gameplay issues, time constraints or budget cuts (Xen- Half Life, etc). Most, like Skyrim…eh. they don’t really need it as long as they sent patches for stuff like 144hz and ultrawide support.
I kinda assumed people understood the messages behind Battlefield 1, Death Stranding, and Helldivers 2, lol. Most of the messages are telegraphed pretty clearly.
Unfortunately, Paradox and Colossal represent everything wrong with the games industry.
Rushed, sloppy, and greedy take on a great idea. Shooting PC mods in the foot for hypothetical console support.Trying to rush out a half-baked port to console on a half-baked, buggy game years before it’s ready. Releasing assetflip dlc before the game is even done or even on consoles, lol.
It’s honestly the only modern game worth $70 imo. One campaign run is like 126+ hours. Additional playthroughs are possible from other characters, which tells the story from different perspectives. Can go to areas you missed in the first playthrough, too :)
No, it is $60, I just feel like other studios don’t work half as hard as Larian does per title and still charge more money.
The sheer amount of script and voice acting in the game is insane. All the balanced fights, scripted scenes, level designs, characters, mo-cap, and rigging…I don’t even want to think how many hours that all mist have taken. Not to mention developing and writing a script, each with multiple choices and logic branches.
…meanwhile COD and 2K Sport game are reskinning their games every year and charging $70 and putting Nicki Minaj as an operator, haha. More power to them. It just feels like one studio is putting in the effort to justify a higher price and still charging the normal price.
My favorite games are Omori, Disco Elysium and Outer Wilds. I cried for hours at the end of those games, and I think the common point in them is high-quality emotional writing and stellar OST (music really affect me) and my attachment to the characters....
Death stranding, a space for the unbound, celeste, Dust: an elysian tale, pokemon mystery dungeon Red rescue team (GBA) or blue rescue team (DS). Baldur’s gate 3 has some personal stories that are extremely wonderful. Bad things happening to good people, and things largely working out depending on how you play. Battlefield One’s campaign had some stories that made my heart ache for characters. People laying down their lives so that their friends can get back to their families.
Detroit: become human was SO close if not for a hamfisted twist. Inscryption isn’t as emotional but packs a wildly interesting story.
It’s worth it. Mads Mikkelsen and Léa Seydoux should have won awards for best supporting actor(s). Emily O’Brien had some tearjerker parts too. It’s far more than the sum of its parts.
Today, on February 28, nearly five years after Control’s initial launch, Remedy Entertainment, the team behind the Alan Wake, Quantum Break, and Control series, released an announcement regarding a deal between them and 505 Games, detailing a full transition to Remedy acquiring full rights to the franchise. While Remedy...
I didn’t even realize it released since it was epic exclusive, lol. I’m sure it’s good, but there is frighteningly little these days that would get me to download another launcher.
I always enjoy a game solo at first, then do co op with friends. It was really fun solo. But I’d like to create a giant underwater farm with friends, and have various seamoths and other vehicles to use with buddies. The multiplayer mod works, it’s just buggy as mods are.
These laws will ban rewards for spending money within a game for the first time, ban rewards for buying consecutive microtransactions, and ban rewards for daily log-ins.
The only game that was kinda a bummer was Tears of the kingdom. The sky world was just copy/pastes with nothing but some robots. I wanted the hot bird people up there or something.
The underground was dead and had a few POIs but was basically just those same annoying ninjas from the first game who disguise themselves as civilians. I liked the story and characters in botw2 better. The map was largely unchanged from the first game. Some of the missions were better. Gannon actually getting a plot was cool. The enemies were better this go around. The gmod bits were cool, but caused the game to run like shit. The game also ran at like, 22 fps the entire time anyways. The shrines were as meh as the first game, which were already so dull I’d look up guides just to get more hearts/stamina.
…it should have been a $25 DLC instead of a $70 game.
It was a solid 4.5/10 for me, mostly just on the amount of rehashed stuff for a $70 game, which should have blown my balls off for waiting six years and $70 later. I hope the next Zelda game is more like Twilight Princess.
I think had they released it on PC, it would have been a bit better, since the vehicles could be built larger and have a further despawn distance without big frame drop penalties. (And frame drops in certain environments). I’m glad for the enemy variation and liked the bosses better in totk. But next game, I hope the gameplay is wildly different and they take some risks with the story. I’d love to see parts where you play as Zelda or something.
All of these award ceremonies and cons are just advertising for the latest games or games that are releasing soon. Companies aren’t building games out of charity, but because they make money for their shareholders and occasionally, a private company.
The shark card whale bonanza killed any excitement I had for the franchise. I know they are gonna just milk the shit out of it, and it will probably cut into the quality of the game/experience. On the plus side, smaller games like Last Train Home kick ass and are a ton of fun, and I’m looking forward to another indie game coming out next year.
I’d really like Larian to do their own thing and not be an IP slave to WOTC and Sony/Disney though. I loved BG3 but want them to continue making OC. There’s so much rehashed stuff these days, having original content is just so…uncommon in the AAA and AA spaces.
It is! They said they are focusing on smaller projects right now- stuff they are excited to work on. Hopefully, that’s more OC. Good shit either way, though. Larian’s past few games have been solid.
While Take-Two is riding high on their announcement that a GTA 6 trailer is coming, its CEO has some…interesting ideas on how much video games could cost, part of a contingent of executives that believe games are underpriced, given their cost, length or some combination of the two.
I bought the new Zelda game for $70, and while fun, didn’t feel worth $70. I won’t be paying $70 anymore. Most games just can’t put out the value required unless they actually build the game from the ground up with a phenomenal story, good replayability and (optional) co-op.
You guys are competing against Deep Rock Galactic, Baldur’s Gate 3, Subnautica, Battlefield 1, Risk Of Rain 2 / Risk of Rain Returns, and many other total gems. If you aren’t beating those high standards, you can’t charge $70.
As much as I like C:S, the thought of getting a relatively barebones game with $200 in DLC over the next 5-7 years to make the city feel complete makes me feel depressed.
That was the bummer in the original game. Only two ways to deal with trash, unless you bought $30 of DLC. I’ll be waiting to see if the game is good or not, or if they totally gimped certain parts of the game like bridges, ports and transit to resell back as a la carte DLC.
Fuuuuck, Elite Dangerous is so fucking good. Anyone can make a zoo sim or other games. Very very few can make a massive space Sim with good controls, multiplayer, and the sheer scale and intensity of E:D’s FPS ship combat.
